  • They say Jesus was Gods son, Steve gave us so much more.

  • I'm a bassist, but after watching Steve Vaii, I wanna play guitar..

  • i honestly cant stand his style im sorry hes a great guitarist and i try to like him but what he plays has no melody it kills me then again he probably wouldnt like my stuff so i guess we're even

  • i think its hilarious how the negative comments get erased from this channel. Steve's ego must take a bruising...

  • Vai has a voice on guitar that's entirely his own. The man doesn't have a cliché bone in his body.

  • @antonio610 its funny cause this isnt really improv... hes bullshitting and using parts of his songs and adding small riffs in them... so its hard to compare

  • @greenrocket570 Whether he's improvising here or not is immaterial - I'm talking about his general style and work. His take on guitar is extremely distinctive.

  • @greenrocket570 If you have heard the studio version, then you'd know that this sounds nothing like the studio version of Building the Church.

  • I mean, what's the point in having that much guitars if you only use three or four Jems?

  • Don't get me wrong, Vai is a master but Guthrie Govan's improv skills put this to shame.

  • @sleazychestnut Every guitarist has his own style, Vai's is a very distinctive one: I definitely prefer Vai's smoothness than Govan. Lukather is unbelievable, too.

  • @sleazychestnut Vai its more unique than Guthrie Govan! i mean in his playing!

  • really WTF is he doing? How can...? How he...? Ah forget it!

  • 1:57 jesus fuckin christ he's so smooth

  • @kungfudragon99 I've been trying to nail that lick since I heard that in G3 with Malmsteen with no success.

  • what im on about is.theres a lot of guys out there who only play the intro.its not steve vai its the dickheads who think they have some virtuoso ability because they learn to play the intro to building a church.

  • man this groove is sick.. good stuff.

  • He is the best period

  • Take EVH over this anyday.

  • great performance,I really like your guitar style!!!

  • melhor que tem !

  • never beats dean wells on improvising.

  • While Steve is a fantastic guitarist, I personally think Guthrie Govan is better. Not by a lot, but there is a noticeable difference. Just my two cents.

  • what a sweet guitar........... im gay and suck my own balls

  • he has his special guitar

  • @TheNuma11 <-- This gus knows what hes talking about.

  • sex dont have to be complicated son, you just find the butt and do what feels right

  • Why can't we stop all the arguments about who the better musician is and enjoy the music that is in the video?

  • wow

  • I find this painful to listen to, its better then any solo i have ever dreamed off, yet its still at the toes of Robert Marcello.

  • Comment removed

  • @TripleTrollForce You deaf douche bag, your comparing him to Marcello? Bwahahaha. Marcello can't play, use the whammy and bend the notes all at one time, his brain is too small. Watch his videos, his brain can't get around to everything at once. Your such a fuktard.

  • @VertigonA380 Completely different styles. Both are amazing in their own way. How about you quit being a 'fuktard'?

  • @VertigonA380

You can't even figure out the difference between your and you're.

  • @dynelol What a douche, complaining about simple grammar with nothing of subtance to post. Maybe I don't give a crap? Consider that you stupid bitch.

  • @VertigonA380

It shouldn't take effort to type well.

  • @dynelol Like a typical "wordsmith" you pursue the smaller issues in life. What possible tragedy could the difference between "your" and "you're" ever cause? Put your energy to something that makes a difference in the world....you could start with errr....multivariable calculus? LOL. Don't pull it off.

  • @VertigonA380

Because you participating in this back and forth we have going here is making a difference in the world. I love irony. lol

  • @VertigonA380 mmmmmmm calc.

  • @TripleTrollForce lol i prefer guitarists to not sound like final fantasy boss battles

  • this man gathers all the music genres i love in every song he records

    perfectly awesome

  • 26 people are distracted by herpes.

  • I wish Steve would do "Warm regards" in a similar fashion, no band small studio type situation. Even though it's not the most techinical piece he's written, it's beautifull. Please Steve? I mean really bend those notes, use the lovely Flo 3 you've got here and get us teary.

  • Steve vai il migliore.

  • what is that green tape in pickup?

  • @fmassaretto ...to avoid the pick getting stocked in that hole.

  • @TheMolysProject uh, thanks

  • @fmassaretto to avoid the high-E string getting caught at the edge of the neck pickup

  • @deathscythekim729 high E or low e?

  • @fmassaretto high pitch E (1st string)

  • @deathscythekim729 sorry i was wrong thanks

  • Your not only watching the greatest guitarist that was ever born but the finest musician ever in human history bar none, not Mozart not anybody.

  • 26 people have their heads frozen in a block of ice.

  • God, <3

  • For any VAI HATERS.......go see him play this song LIVE!~....you will be humbled, dazzled, amazed............and feel Blessed........that you have ever heard it.

  • Inspirational....magnificent!!!

  • The first time I saw Steve play two things happened:

    1. I loved the sound of his music, still do after 20 years

    2. Never tried playing the guitar because I knew I'd never be anywhere near as good.

  • Just think a little moment, what would be passing through Vai's mind while playing an improvisation? damn, every note from him, its pure gold

  • lol stev vai aint great because of the scales he uses, he's great cuz he revolutionized the way the guitar is played!

  • I have downloaded this and watched it in slow motion a couple of times. If you are a guitar nerd, then you will think it's a kick.

  • cool! wish i could play like that

  • If that guitar was a woman she would have had 3000 orgasms by now.

  • @guitdude09 out of everything in that video you could have commented on (especially the music) you choose his shoes... queer

  • How is he that good?:D NO ONE BEATS THE VAI

  • Wtf, why is this video ending?

  • This song is amazing...I love Steve Vai

  • Love you Steve Vai...Woow! :O You're the best

  • oh wow, i haven't been seeing steve's videos lately i guess..its just now that i noticed that all his frets are scalloped, im used to seeing just his last 4 or 5 frets scalloped..when did he started it?

  • @engrjoey0611 i assume that its just FLO III which has a neck like that..

  • 555+ กาก

  • could someone tell me what's that stuff at his pickup? i mean that green rubber or something...

  • @skimam It's just a piece of green tape... i read somewhere that he put it there because sometimes when you divebomb like crazy (just like he does) the lower E string could get stuck below the edge of the humbucker. (sorry for my english ^^)

  • @nazgulp35 jesus man, i´m an idiot :-) that´s what happens to me all the time, i should have known that.Btw your english´s ok , mine suck, anyway not everyone is borned in an english speaking country, so be happy about your next language.I´d like to know how many people from US and UK can speak in another languages like we do, enslaved by colonialism :-)

  • @skimam Lol! I recently switched to floating tremolo... and I'm just waiting for the day that happens to me! lol! and yeah! there's a lot of poeple who won't unrestand that english is not the largest spoken language in the world! I hate when some random guy comes and the only thing that he replies, are the mistakes you made! agh!! that really pisses me off!

  • a beast, a Don, a Legend..... Thank you Steve.... i am glad to have been able to appreciate your work at an age where i'd understand it most.... you rock bro!

  • Nice shoes Vai :)

  • SOME GREAT PLAYING BUT THATS ONE HIDEOUS GUITAR!

  • @Danomite8 lol ok, back to ur les paul

  • @stuartjonez with pleasure. next time i feel my guitar needs a handle for some reason il give you a shout ok?

  • @Danomite8 hidious? you need to get slapped into reality.

  • @7goatmilk7 man, it has a fucking handle. the guitar has a fucking handle!!! and a shiny pick guard!! it sounds great but it is a hideous piece of wood...

  • @Danomite8 What planet do you come from?

  • @Danomite8 hideous? the fuck is wrong with you boy? I own one and it is the best guitar i have ever played in all aspects

  • @silvano751 man, i siad it sounded great but looks gay. it has a fucking handle and a shiny pickguard, queer flowers on the neck and a gold bridge! enjoy your camp guitar.

  • @Danomite8 only person ive ever heard say that. Actually the handle is really unique and i find very useful. And trust me, if you actually held one you'd actually realize how sweet it is. And the sound comes from Dimarzio evolutions, in my opinion some of the best pickups ion the world

  • @Danomite8 I've got to say I agree. I don't say it often because so many people would take offence. It's a great guitar when it's a different colour and the decoration is less gaudy. That's just my opinion though. It fits his personality though I suppose.

I've actually got a 7 string Ibanez, can't remember the model name. The one with the good Edge pro on it. I heard previous ones were really cheap or something? Anyway, I agree, I've never understood the popularity of his model in particular.

  • @theriggermortis2400 Finaly a man with taste!!

  • is unique!!!

  • FLO III is gorgeous..

  • Steve Vai.. repeat his solos!?!! Have you even turned on the speakers or are your Slash videos playing over his by mistake?

  • Haha he uses a lot of ideas from Km-Pee-du-wee, but its still so different

  • man!: 2:23 , i like :)

  • Those gutars are jealous of FLOIII \m/ Awesome and one of my favorites.

  • I still can't figure out how he does that lick from 0:25 to 0:29. It sounds so simple yet so complex.

  • Wow, he is genious

  • incredible sound and skills...god bless steve vai and everyone who listens to him....cheers

  • incredible souns and skills...god bless steve vai and everyone who listens to him....cheers

  • I like

  • I'm watching this as I take a shit... I hope that doesn't offend anyone, cuz its a great shit.

  • @Twixgtx its better than you so shut up

  • scalloped.

  • awesome improvisation

  • Nice shoes.

  • What the fuck was them scales?!?! Some sort of weird drugged up jazz! Fuckn sweet though!

  • extreeme backingtrack!

  • beautilful little stevie vie!

watching you play that guitar is karma.

  • CAT MOVES:)

  • Now that's real guitar playing!!!!

  • i love his music specially AT 1:20

  • Comment removed

  • i love guitarists that uses and abuses the trem bar..but Steve is on another level of control with the trem..He's just brilliant!

  • I absoluetly dig his tone! What is it?

  • vai often to repeat some licks?

come on, that's why we call it 'lick', because we repeat it.

Ask Joe Satriani, Allen Collins, John Petrucci, and Paul Gilbert if you don't believe me.

  • what scales is he using here ?

  • @MrBlack125 it's kinda hard to tell since there is no bass track. if I had to guess I'd say he starts off in the Ionian mode (major scale) and switches to the Dorion mode and uses it almost exclusively until 1:55 where he mixes in some other stuff, while still mainly relying on the Dorian, playing a lot of wide intervals and sumperimposing lost of different arpeggios.

  • @MrBlack125 its actually a super scale, consisting of all 12 notes. No one really knows the scale name, how its built or how its used. But all i can tell you is many, and i mean MANY have to tried to learn it from watching Vai videos, unfortunately....none survived. It is with my full blessing that i wish you good luck if you're actually crazy enough to try and learn it. Please be careful my dear friend.

haha just messing dude, lol Hes using the D- Dorian scale. which is pretty much the C-major

  • @mecmar Plus a scale consisting of all 12 notes would just be chromatic

  • @Progehr34 ummm actually bro not necessarily... There are many scales out there you have NEVER seen, heard or will probably ever encounter in your life. Don't try to be a smart ass kid. It never works. you see, you dont have to play the 12 notes from 1 to the other. you can skip some, but at the end you hit all twelve. and you will have more then just 8 notes. they are mostly indian scales, and middle eastern scales. You learn shit like this at berklee.

  • @mecmar They can span more than one octave?

  • @Progehr34 yea man. when you figure it out its the coolest thing to play with. trust me. And also, there many scales out there where you play certain set of notes going up, and another going down. all in the same scale. very very cool stuff. if you get serious about this scale shit you can find amazing books and videos and shit but whate ever you do, dont get the guitar grimour..its bullshit.

  • @mecmar You don't learn shit about exotic scales at Berklee. Also most indian scales or Middle Eastern scales can be made out of the regular Melodic minor or Harmonic minor scales with the modes of them or even adjusted pentatonic scales. And a scale consisting all 12 notes would indeed be just a chromatic scale as Progehr34.

  • weird that you say that stoned philosopher... because im at Berklee rite now and thats what im learning.... listen man, you have absolutely no-- well you have some- idea of what your talking about. You second sentence, you can say that about any fucking scale, but can you play it? and your last sentence just like i said before, no man. you can have a scale with all 12 notes and it will not be chromatic. Try it. and just chill man, this is music bro. just tryin to help a guyout@PhilosopherOnWeed

  • @MrBlack125 a mixture of mode's and ambiguous scales

  • @MrBlack125 He's using the Vailoshredlian mode.

  • @MrBlack125

    definitely not snake.

  • @MrBlack125 Super Galatic scales!

  • @MrBlack125 All of them.

  • assholes ........complain if ya can play at least one fourth of the songs steve plays!!!!! steve has noo need to become 'YOU' in playin.........

  • Ever thought...maybe he had an off day? It happens to us all regardless.

  • i love vai's compositions but i was never a fan of his improv/adlib style. he'd be in trouble if he was to jam and have a fixed bridge guitar.

  • @mojoefly sure...guess you think he really needs that whammy bar, go watch some vids of vai playing a fixed bridge with zappa, the MOTHER of genius composition covered by nutty improv.

  • @TheLydianRocks that was before. this is him today. dont base it on a few songs. Vai's adlib skill is not good (for me) , litsen to as many adlibs as you can find. its all the same non melodic licks again and again. but like i said his compositions are truly one of a kind. im a vai lover not hater, im just not a fan of his adlib skills. dont confuse adlib with composition.

  • @mojoefly well each guitarist has their own style. It's Steve's style and please be easy with it. And if you pay attention to some great / virtuoso guitarists, Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani ALSO repeat some licks.

That's why they called it 'lick', because they repeat it.

  • @MrFGunadi EVERYBODY has their stock licks that they will change and develop and play variations on. Even jazz musicians do it. it's impossible to have a style without doing so.

  • @mightyafrowhitey yea that's true. :) every musician has their own style so just make peace with it.

  • @mojoefly

    haha, na

  • isso que é solo

  • I'm a huge Vai fan. I understand its improv, but I don't like this solo. In my humble opinion melody is being sacrificied for technique here. Then again Vai is always experimenting with new phrases and whatnot, so not everythings going to gel. He's still the master (in my opinion he was never the student)

  • He certainly has a uniqe style. Probably from him having Joe Satrian as a guitar teacher the lucky guy.

  • not his best BTC...........the best one was the one i saw in Austin, tx back in 05....but the best video version is the live in tokyo one....yes even better than where the wild things are with that hottie asian violin player

  • Nice!

  • Haters, please shut the fuck up. This guy never repeats his solos.

  • @Glutonid I'm not a hater, but what you said generally isnt true - Live, he usually plays exactly the solo your hear one the album. Even his kickass solo break after Answers on that first G3 album was planned out, there's videos of him playing almost exactly the same thing as early as 1990. I love Vai's playing, and THIS solo is obviously improvised. But most of the solos you hear live were carefully composed.

  • @RobbbbCappelletto Of course but I mean't when he improvises he never repeats.

  • @Glutonid I love Steve Vai, but at 1:59 he uses that same pattern in his song "I Know You're Out There".

  • @kamiraanddie12394 Yep, he uses it in K'm pee du wee and a few other songs too. Even Petrucci sometimes uses simillar pattern.

  • @kamiraanddie12394 it is one of his signature licks, tha't not bad IMO but he uses it in K'm pee du wee also ;)

  • @kamiraanddie12394

I don't understand the "but." Guitarists repeat licks all the time. If that was a problem, then blues guitarists would be considered the worst in the world. The fact that you can only name one lick shows his diversity of licks. He's just stacking a bunch of fifths on top of each other. He's not reinventing the wheel here.

  • @vmcnick Neither do I, lol. i was never complaining or anything, just trying to educate some people. i love Steve Vai's stuff.

  • he's in top form in this vid!

  • Godhimself

  • In my opinion, this was very proficiently played GARBAGE. Looks like a waste of talent to me..I mean seriously..wtf was that??

  • @AGENTtimex in my opinion ur a moron so shut the hell up

  • @rlf09 PS: You play Brian adams songs! ROFFLAFAO!!!!! PAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH yeah you have great taste.

  • @AGENTtimex oh good for you. You learned how to learn to use the caps lock. good for you!! and by the way i do have good taste i looked up this video didnt i. and another thing it just really pisses me off that you dont even do anything spectacular so you have to go on here and rag on this mans talent your a bitch and go do something productive with your very pathetic life. I have more talent in my little finger than you will ever have in your whole body.

  • @rlf09 lol you mad? I said nothing of his talent, I just said that this was horrible to listen to. Your argument only supports mine. You're sitting here placing all the worht in a player in his technical proficiency alone, whereas the idea I'm bringing is that all of that effort can be for not if the end result is just not pleasant to listen to. Learn to comprehend before you go typing moronic comments that you'll have to defend and further embarrass yourself, dimwit. ROFL.

  • @AGENTtimex "ur a moron"...ROFL the ultimate irony. Someone who can't even be bothered to type the entire word "You're" wants to question other peoples' intelligence.. I guess that matches up to the fact that you're dumb enough to think this shitty guitar playing is "cutting edge" in the first place. Good job, buddy! ;)

  • @clkvlk Oh yeah , it is your point of view , bot me and a lot of other people (I think) don't see it this way. I play guitar and my great influence was Steve Vai , I can tell you , each music of him has emmotion , and a feeling , that few , will achieve some day . Have a nice day . ( I'm sorry for the bad english , I'm brazilian )

  • another emotionless music of Vai composed only to seem different

  • i wish i was there and watching steve vai and listen to his talk :(

  • sounds like he's only repeating himself, once he was a good guitarist, now hes just a like a parody of the real Vai

  • seriously, WHAT IS ON HIS FEET?

  • @PoggerzZ your just jealous lmao

  • @Guitarman461 lol, true :)

  • I dont like this song. He's not really saying anything. It was like whatever.

  • I find hardly to like his music since i started listening to
