Because of the environment the boy lives in, his words and actions actually hurts the girl instead of showing his love. He is kind of "polluted" and can't communicate well. The language barrier interpretation is probably the one I don't like the most even thoug hits so widely accepted, it doesn't really feel like a touching interpretation what with the mum teaching him the wrong words and all. The one I read recently about them being twins with the girl being dead made so much more sense to me though I can't seem to find that comment anymore. With that explanation I totally got the Evangelion reference with the whole instrumentality stuff and "living as one being."
