  • Luke Kelly, a true legend - died much too young :'-(

  • Luke Kelly is my all time favourite singer, this is one of his best songs

  • thank you luke for all the beautiful songs you sung you was a legend r.i.p luke

  • I watched the film Luke today. When he sang this i had goosebumps but they never screened the whole song.

Thank you so much for posting this. An incredible character who truly sang from the Heart.

  • This song has filled me with warmth. I love the unique sound of Irish voice and accompaniment.

  • This is the most beautiful sound I have heard for years.

Rest in Peace Luke - You have done your best!

  • @theloudhalo - Thanks for sharing, Helen

  • Johnyb32k - Idiotic, this is and can only ever be Hiroshima.

  • waht a voicenp

  • i heard this sang better, but then somebody banged my door and woke me from my sleep.

  • I had only heard Simon & Garfunkels version before this. Despite what people on other sites have said, I really like that one. BUT THIS IS REALLY POWERFUL. THEATRICAL. 11/10.

  • makes the hair on the back of your neck stand right up! Awesome

  • Who cares, just listen to Lukes voice and the the fact the sun is setting in the west the last glimps of sun light in IRELAND.

  • What a freakishly good voice he had

  • @tony10396861 i see what yer sayin' but I would never put Luke and the word freakishly in the same sentence (grin)

  • kellyoneill you have to be a relative, or only a sheff st head would now this :)

  • @MultiHawkeye101 Nope, Just a Fan ...a huge fan :)

  • amazing song.

  • trust Luke Kelly to make tragedy sound so beautiful

  • god help the 4 that dislike this song

  • powerful.

  • the sun is hot. but no where near as our luke.

  • A grim, grim song but gloriously, gloriously sung.

  • Bel canto; they dont come much better than luke kelly!!!

  • Great version. Luke we'll never hear a voice like yours again.

  • Comment removed

  • @irishgeal1 Yes, and for those who heard hm ....there should be a monument/S ummer school to this man....we can all be glad he passed this way. any ideas??

He had great passion , tunefulness, very good intonation and diction ...Luke was not just your typical singer ..he was a bard ..with that street balladeer quality...he always sang For something ..RIP

  • thx kellyoneill for posting this great videos really good job :-)

    just fantastic music

  • 'As I was coming over the Cork and Kerry mountains

I met with Colin Farrell and his money he was countin'....

  • FANTASTIC VOICE. LUKE R.I.P

  • @reggaefan1000 feck off

  • did anyone else know luke was a big supporter of the cnd (campain for nuclear disarmarment) and that he wes comunist but it isnt suprising for someone from his backround who had some reading of comunist litutre whitch he got in his time in england

  • this song is not about how well luke sings it, no one in the world could sing it better, its about the songs message and luke wanted people to get that message.

  • unreal. amazing

  • Why do the best always have to go first???!!!

  • @ejlaparram Because if they went last, there'd be no one to remember them when they were gone.

  • @ejlaparram I think that we miss the best the most.

But bad poeple will go for sure too.

But I egree he was (is) the best.

  • just great no more to say, bob millar

  • without out dowt, the song that put the nuclear issue on the international map of peoples minds and still lingers there.

  • luke has layed down to take his well deserved rest, damm, it.

  • CND

  • first time i heard this

    Great!

  • Luke kelly ur memory will live on forever..!! its jems like this that i will treasure ..thank you luke

  • treasure the voice folks, he was the greatest folk singer of his time, a legend.

  • lukes singing was hotter than the sun

  • Just wondering if anyone knows: are these lyrics in the public domain? or who owns the rights?

(I am thinking of using some of them in a novel)

Thanks, and btw Luke Kelly can do it all.

  • According to PD Info, it isn't in the public domain. However, if you use it for "academic purposes" and copy only a small section, it might be allowed.

If you want to reproduce a copy of the song in your book, I would recommend finding the original writer and ask for permission.

  • Thanks for the info. I will have to find out who the original writer is most likely...

  • This song was written in the early sixties by Ian Campbell.

  • Excuse me but, are you a writer? What kind of books you write? What's the name of your next book?!!

  • jesus christ

  • Comparisons may be odius but just listen to the richness of Luke's voice compared to Liam Clancey's version.....which is also good.

  • This song perfectly shows his amazing voice and this is why he is renowned as the best.

  • Excellent song, r.i.p. Luke

  • Love this song. Just thought I'd mention it.

  • neuclear bomb

  • Um...Could someone tell mean the song meaning? I mean...I have an idea but it seems too...obvious.

  • neuclear destruction if i remember right

  • I think the 'mushroom cloud of death' should answer your question

  • The futility and slaughter of war doodoo120.Workers of all lands unite,no more hiroshimas comrades.

  • It was the anthem of the nuclear disarmament movement.

"Now the sun has come to earth, shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death."

  • long live luke kelly!!

  • i admit i first heard this song by simon n garfunkel and i love their version.. but i have to say this version keeps the real meaning of the song better.. i actually prefer this version because it is more meaningful to me..

  • RIP LUKE;

  • No disrespect to S&G, but NOBODY could possible sing better than this!

  • @joeygsmom NOBODY can sing ANY song as good as Luke.

  • The greatest singer Ive ever heard for a million different reasons. You will live on forever Luke.

  • well said....couldn't agree more.

  • great song great singer gives a bad ass like me goosebumps god bless you Mr Kelly !!!!

  • simon hates garfunkel. FUCK YOU S&G FANBOY. Luke Kelly is the underdog here, he doesnt need fanboys to make his songs better, because he makes any song perfect. And yes I do see the irony in my words, cosmic or otherwise but fuck it, I rest easy knowing I tried to educate the lesser minds that cloud this world.

  • Sorry, but The Ian Campbell Folk group sung the original. The Simon and Garfunkel version isn't necessarily better, it is different. In certain situations it may be better, and to me it sometimes is, but for sombreness and beauty I think Luke has them beat. Then again that's my opinion and Bousie's as well, I presume. (Bousie...Bousefield?)

  • Bousie is dublin slang for scavanger my friend. It is also a last name found mainly in the British Isles. You can make your assumption on which reason I called myself it. I apologise for my abrupt harshness towards a fellow human but I respond in a manner of "like takes like".

  • Great song, great singer

  • i dont care what anyone says luke was a foundig father of the hippie movement. god bless hippies god bless luke

  • Wow, that last verse is just brutal. What a great song, the way it leads you in one direction and then completely turns about is fantastic and makes the message all the more jarring.

  • Ian Campbell definitely wrote this song. His son is Ali Campbell of UB40

  • I remember the first time I heard this, it starts out so nice. Then you realize what its about, it is definetly a good song tho.

  • Love this great one since I was a child. May he sing on wherever he may be now! Still sadly missed.

    Thank you , ♥Luke♥!

  • In all his songs it's so obvious Luke loved the human race. Anything that helped kill innocents hurt him deeply and it comes across in his singing.

He sang from the heart for humanity and is immortal among ordinary folks all over the world because of this.

  • Amazing... ♥

  • I used to listen to luke kelly with my dad.... man.... this song was always the one on repeat..great lyrics!... r.i.p luke... <3

  • s.m r.i.p kilbride

    miss you mate.

    bray.

  • the end of the world song

    the beginning of luke kelly

  • who wrote this song? did luke not write it? its a brilliant song.luke is a legend!

  • No it was written by Ian Campbell

  • hey have you seen in bruges with colin farrel and brendan gleeson? it's got luke kellys recording of the song raglan road in it

  • Yeah, Luke's song was the only reason i bought the DVD,

its a Brilliant film though, I dont really like Colin farrel but he was brilliant in that film,

    i love brendan gleeson anyway.

  • yeah it was perfect for the part thank god he's finally gettng some recognition

  • @kellyoneill Brendan Gleeson was a teacher in my school, man is a legend!

  • the only major song Luke wrote was "For what died the sons of Rosin". He was an interpreter of songs rather than a writer.

  • i think Simon & Garfunkel are the best version of this Song...thats its Opinion S&G are Genius....Luke Kelly toO...

  • Jesus.

I heard Simon and Garfunkel sing this. It always saddened me and I knew it was about an atomic bomb but I never knew it was about Hiroshima. I used t skip it but now I think I better listen to it.

Luke Kelly sings it well, of course. Never knew he'd sung it

  • hiroshima yes, this is the part of the song now the sun has come to earth rounded in a mushroom cloud of death, so death comes in a blinding flash of hellish heat and leaves us all mere ash i hope this helps you

  • yeah it does thanks lol

  • beautful singing nonetheless sad song though

  • this song is about the dropping of the atom bomb

  • Written by Ian Campbell, this is an example of a song whose words you don't want to understand - too miserable - but just let the sound wash over you. Sung by an incomparable singer. (Anyone less lass than 66 appreciating Luke is a Johnny-come-lately.)

  • whats that part in brackets supposed to mean?

  • the song of luke kelly The Sun Is Burning

is about the first atom bomb to be droped great song very sad

  • you mean hiroshima?

  • hiroshima yes, this is the part of the song now the sun has come to earth rounded in a mushroom cloud of death, so death comes in a blinding flash of hellish heat and leaves us all mere ash i hope this helps you

  • Luke's voice will live on forever, for all to enjoy, not just uber fans like yourself.

  • funny thing though that picture you see is luke kelly as he's about to sing "scorn not his simplicity"

  • ireland KICKS ASS!!!

  • Celtic Music is the greatest ever. English folk music is all about twirling around a maypole.

  • Ain't that true

  • @nacho1560 What a load of pretentious nationalistic horseshit. 'English folk music is all about twirling around a maypole'?? Take a trip down to your local library and open your ears. I Live in Cork and love old English folk songs. But then I love music. Not so fond of horseshit though, but I hear it's great for growing rhubarb.

  • @claney01 You know nothin my friend

  • 'sun is burning luke' he wouldn't stop singing it.said as much about him. a good man and a sad loss.

  • Luke Kelly is the dead soul of an Ireland destroyed by material acquistion.

  • Ever hear Simon & Garfunkel singing this? They haven't a patch on Luke singing it! Luke you were the man!

  • Three and a half minutes of utter perfection. The words are thought provoking and the voice is mesmerising.Luke at his brilliant, unbeatable best. There was,is and never will be a better singer than Luke Kelly.

  • well said dubb1995 Luke is a legend, I agree with you big style.

  • The voice moves me. Luke was the greatest. Nobody and I mean nobody, could do it better.

  • Agree with 100% the hairs on the back of my arms were standing up after the first 5 secs on hearing the start of this song, I have the greatest honour of seeing him live bout 10 times, and actually had a drink back stage with him.

    Cheers Peter

  • When Luke sang songs they were all the best versions. It is the singer that is great. The song is just the vehicle for his greatness. Sing on Luke. Sing for us

  • Now the sun has come to earth shrouded in a mushroom cloud of death.Workers of all lands let us unite together, our revenge will be the laughter of our children.

  • best version of this song by far

  • Geordie Bob Davenport also sang this with great passion. Thanks for posting.

  • Sung with such passion his songs live on for future generations. When i am down i only need to listen to luke and my spirits are lifted.

  • One of his intimate sky!

  • Great work Kelly! This song brings lots of memories, driving to the west coast, seeing the Atlantic for the first time and admiring 40 shades of green. Where would you get it?! Luke left the legacy of great songs and unforgettable voice for many generations to come. True inspiration!

  • aaah luke whyd ya have to leave us

  • coz life is fecking cruel mate.

  • Do you have a film clip of him singing this?

  • no mate, wish a did.

  • Ah well it's still a beautiful song I've now got my grandmother hooked on luke kelly lol.

  • how true Kelly but less so because of your posts on You Tube

  • search for this post...not bad cover either:

    Jack L on the panel

  • this is what luke does best - takes songs & sings them to utter perfection...the song Joe Hill is a perfect example. doesn't sound great when other people sing it or when u hear it in pubs (too fast)...Luke nails it

  • As Luke does with every song.

    i adore the man!!!

  • Ian Campbell wrote, 'The Sun is Burning' in the 1960's

  • Listened to Wolfe Tones and Simon & Garfunkel (who wrote it.) Luke Kelly is the best, that's definite. Miserable when you read the words. It's the music and the sound of LK's voice that tells.

  • They didnt write it.

  • Kelly O' Neill you are fecin Class. I love Luke Kelly are these songs all taken of his 'best of' Album

  • some are, but theres a mix of different cd's and LP's,

    Love luke myself!!

  • I should also mention that no, Simon & Garfunkel didn't write it, Ian Campbell did, but they were the first to perform it on an album.

  • Although I agree Luke Kelly did the best cover, the original Simon & Garfunkel version is the best... I'm sorry, I'm just a sap for the awesomeness that was Simon & Garfunkel.

  • lol to each their own, has to be Luke version for me!

  • What a great song and man, I'm happy to hear this song on a sunny day like today.

  • Nobody could convey the meaning and emotion of a song quite so powerfully as the great Luke Kelly!!!!!!!!!!

  • will ye lave me goosepimples alone Luke ye bollix

  • I'm 20 and I borrowed my dads Luke Kelly CD one day! This guy can sing with so much emotion its unreal! A true great!

  • I am 30.

Luke Kelly is better than Sinatra.

I am not very emotional, but Luke makes me cry..

  • luke is better than anyone, nobody will ever come close !!!

  • Thanks for all the Dubliners vids and songs...SUPERB!!!!

  • my pleasure mate!!!

  • With you 100%. Getting this track off winmx so that it can loop; I'll go to sleep with it playing and wake to to it playing.

  • Have it! Better sound quality too. Time for bed - 1.10 a.m. Good job I'm retired so no work to go to.

  • Sweet agony. Last verse, last sentence; my wife died last year. The Sun has disappeared indeed.
