I think that the main message in this film is the fact that Stewart took Waynes glory. Wayne always looked out for the opportunity to shoot Marvin. But Stewart done it. Dude.

I saw this when it came out.James Stewart knew he would lose and probably die, bur "rifht and truth" stood up to Wrong and Lies" .It was obvious who would win until Liberty Valance fell dead (shot from the side by a hidden John Wayne). This gave the public hope though they didn't know who really killed the evil.
