He is the most relaxed performer I ever saw. I saw him at the St Paul Campus of the U of M years ago and he told the audience that if he gets too slick we should tell him. He did not get too slick.
i saw him do this song at a " Down from the Mtn." tour here in NY. They had an intermission and then without any intoduction he just came out to the microphone. I said " oh yea here we go!!! No-one knew who he was but once he started the place went silent and jaws dropped! Just him in a white t-shirt and bib overalls and a guitar, and eyes bugged out as he played " Under the Double eagle". People looked around looking for other guitar players not believing HE was the ONLY one playing!!
Damn, I've always loved this song. My cousin was into Norman years ago and told me his grandma starting teaching him guitar when he was like 12 or something, idk for sure. Cool story though. Norman = flat picking perfection.
Heck yeah, it's a 1934 D-18, but did you know that it's a '36 D-18 that he's holding on the cover of the Whiskey album? He told me that after a concert a couple of years back. All these years I thought they were one and the same. Must be nice to have pre-war Martins up to your ears!
@garythemessage nobody can toch this guy ,,, wouldnt it be a dream, to sat in on a kicten party and listen to him yahooo ,, but it is only a dream lol
@clyde21641 I remember my dad playing this, too. I even asked for it a time or two. This, after growing up thinking it was basically an "old fart" tune. Now that I am one myself, it's gotten a lot better. :)
Love this man. I have been listening to him for ...uh oh dating myself...30 years...ANYway, was just talking with a friend of mine tonite about how you can hear soul in songs.. some musicians are technically great but have no soul. Norman has both the technical and the soulful greatness. Thank you for posting...
Saw your comment in "muddy waters at newport hoochie coochie man". Do you like you watch my tribut to jimmy reed? Just click on my name (leaving comments/rating would be nice). I like Norman Blake - especially his playing not so much his singing (but that is okay). I once had a recording from him from the 50's "don't you be still". I think the band was called DIXIELAND DRIFTERS. Do you know it?
Man, I've gotten to where I almost like Blake's flat-pickin more than Rice's. This is just beautiful. And to think what a great vocal song-writer the guy is too. Keep the good stuff comin bluesboy.

I've been around for decades and have NEVER found anybody who could touch this piece, nobody can play it like Papa Blake.

Norman plays old fidddle tunes and standard country tunes such as this one , probably the best except for Doc.

Style! This man brings style to his playing. You can learn all the fast jamming you want, but style distinguishes one great picker from all the rest.

I've spent many hours listening to Norman. Incredible musician and a very nice guy. He's number one for flatpickers in my book.

You all should check out Norman Blake on the Johnny Cash Show. He plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo.

No electricity or amps or pick-ups needed when you are this loaded with talent .

Heck, apparently you don't even need rhythm guitar or vocals. He's got it all right there.
