i've been a big fan of Ricci's since the early 70's; my teacher was a childhood friend of his in San Fran. i've seen him many times live; he always makes your hair stand on end! nevertheless, i'm disappointed in how his playing slipped, starting in mid/late 70's. like he's coasting on his talent, getting sloppy with the fundamentals, maybe not practicing much. oh well. his early recordings are amazing, especially the "paganini recital" album with Louis Persinger.
@cornel999 I think it's so hard to keep ones playing at that highest level. Maestro Ricci played tiredlessly throughout his long career. I'm sure it took its toll. If you recall, Heifetz slowed his concertizing quite a bit after the 40's and was very selective as to what he played. He was cursed with the perfection of his recordings and had a very heavy burden. In any one season, Ricci played multiple concertos & recital programs; no one does that now! As a whole...he is amazing.
The bow change produced in the 1:12 the change from up to down is a pretty example of how to do the change with de bodie and whit the hips.
In the last moment when the bow arrives the frog, he turns to his left accompanying the course, then make the change accompanying again the down bow turning to the right, also too apear make a change of balance in the feets. Beatiful, Ricci is pure magic.
Thanks for posting this video. This is certainly one of the best examples of genuine emotional interpretation ever put to a piece of music. The Last Rose of Summer is an extremely meaningful tune, as the title suggests.
You're welcome! I think there's something very unique about Mr. Ricci's playing...it's just so spontaneous! And I think that's what makes his playing so meaningful. He had a tough childhood as a prodigy, and somehow managed to survive those trying years...and his outlet was the violin.
ERRATA CORRIGE: THE SECOND ENCORE ISN'T TARREGA /RICCI " Recuerdos de l'Alhambra" BUT ANOTHER RICCI TRANSCRIPTION FROM ANONIMOUS "JEUX INTERDITS" (GIOCHI PROIBITI) !!!
He is such a virtuoso...

Thanks a lot for posting. By the way, the second piece is actually "Romance de Amor", not "Recuerdos de la Alhambra".
