I am a huge fan of Ilayaraja compositions. I like Rahman composing too. But...
If i will ever bow down to one musician it is Ilayaraja.
But my point here is.....
Why should we fight over one ilayaraja and one rahman if we could have hundreds of ilayarajas and rahmans with far superior talents...! How can we get them...?
We must include music as one of our school subject like science and math.

actually Illayaraja is not the best coz I've come across many of his songs , most of them he sings himself but in some luv songs he's voice is not so pleasant and it doesn't suit the song. I think Illayaraja is trying to gain fame. his so selfish....
By curiosity I listened his best of songs on youtube but sorry to say I was not at all impressed.It seems this MD relies heavily on south indian raagas so I will not consider him original MD. Atleast Rahman has taught todays generation MDs to how to use commercially available loops in their music instead of copying around the world like his predecessors did.Only one thing comes in my mind about this comparison JEALOUSY some idiots keep saying same thing again and again which I dont accept at all

I don't know about you but I was aware of Illay Raja at the time of Roja itself and I am from North India. It is not necessary that an expert in one field or one region should be famous all over. Illay Raja was and is a BIG name in South India. IR suffered a bit after ARR since IR was not aware of the modern recording and arrangement techniques and these are the 2 strong points of ARR. In fact, many believe that ARR is a better arranger than a MD, I also agree to it to some extent.

Only a person with a narrow vision like you can grade artistes who are a 1000 times more talented than us as North Indian vs South Indian. You really lack a sense of music and a sense of identity. IR may be less famous in NI than in SI but that does nothing to reduce his greatness. It is not the fault of Sun if a man has lived in an underground cellar all his life and refuses to believe anything called a sun. Neither IR nor ARR are flawless but still both are Super Greats.

Cheeni Kum's music was awesome, try to listen to it again. You have the right to express yourself but why do you have to pull down one to bring up the other? If IR fans do that to ARR why should ARR fans do the same thing? IR is no ordinary MD, he may be old now but he is still an old lion. Just because few North Indians don't know IR it does not mean IR is a non entity. Did not large continents of America and Australia exist even when no one knew about them? Try to discover IR, again.

You are free to listen to any genre that you may like, who can object to it? I am a very big ARR fan and a music lover in general too. But I am irritated to find such fanatics of any artiste who believe that their fav artiste is the only one in the world in all its history and geography and no one else can even be compared to it. Rafi vs KK, ARR vs IR, Fans of Atif Aslam. All these people (and many more) have a very narrow PoV and can't appreciate other works. No hard feelings here too.

Definitely, his music has more sounds than the traditional violin, mrudangam, tabla, harmonium combo. Rahman plays around in his studio, records his tunes and the director selects them and then, it gets the lyrics. Prasoon Joshi reportedly took an year to write the lyrics for "Arziyan".

The quality of rahman's tamil music started declining after 2001 may be there were better tunes and songs from Harris and yuvan.. I'd like to hear rahman of roja, bombay, taal, dilse...

The longing for homeland brings tears to almost all listeners. If you dont beileve me, simply google "yeh jo desh hai tera". Listen to the closing credits of "Dil se". See if your prelude and interlude is there :). Nayakan has some brilliant piece of bg music. Jodha Akbar. Lagaan. I hope you've noticed the heavenly score in these movies

both music directors are extremely talented no question about that. But any1 can tell you Ilayaraja is a greater music director than AR Rahman. One fact to prove this point: Ilayaraja: 909 albums/movies made, AR rahman: 118 albums produced..... enough said..... its pretty hilarious that a topic like this is brought up when the answer is quite obvious.

I have been listening to ARR's music since 1992 when Roja came out and have in my collection almost every hit song of his! In the same way I alsohave in my collection lots of hit songs of Ilayaraja mostly from 80s and 90s and today I listen more to Ilayaraja's tunes than ARR. I hardly listen to ARR's hits these days those used to listen to it a lot when they came ! They were good when they came but in long run it was Raja's tunes which earned a longer place in my heart

AR is the best.. His music is always new and can make music suitable both for indian and international movies.. He don't have fear to experiment. But IR music is limited to only indian industry. His songs are all similar which are based on just melody and nothing else. I dont find any difference in IR songs. He doesn't have courage to experiment. However I found Yuvan a lot lot better than IR.

I am a huge fan of Ilayaraja compositions. I like Rahman composing too. But...
If i will ever bow down to one musician it is Ilayaraja.

By curiosity I listened his best of songs on youtube but sorry to say I was not at all impressed.It seems this MD relies heavily on south indian raagas so I will not consider him original MD. Atleast Rahman has taught todays generation MDs to how to use commercially available loops in their music instead of copying around the world like his predecessors did.Only one thing comes in my mind about this comparison JEALOUSY some idiots keep saying same thing again and again which I dont accept at all

I don't know about you but I was aware of Illay Raja at the time of Roja itself and I am from North India. It is not necessary that an expert in one field or one region should be famous all over. Illay Raja was and is a BIG name in South India. IR suffered a bit after ARR since IR was not aware of the modern recording and arrangement techniques and these are the 2 strong points of ARR. In fact, many believe that ARR is a better arranger than a MD, I also agree to it to some extent.

IR may be less famous in NI than in SI but that does nothing to reduce his greatness. If the current generation is not aware of his works then it is not his fault. NI is anyways very bigoted esp about SI. To all the guys who vouch for rahman, how about this??? Get hold of raja and rahman, give them a situation and ask them to come up with music without any synthesizer and samplers... Do you think rahman can come up with atleast 10% what raja would come up??? This is musical talent. Raja is a natural musical talent while rahman is a technology talent.
In software parlance, Raja is a framework developer and rahman merely uses those frameworks (given by various samplers and synthesizers)

Definitely, his music has more sounds than the traditional violin, mrudangam, tabla, harmonium combo. Nobody wrote a great novel just because he's got the best typewriter, neither did anyone become a great photographer because he could afford the best camera.

unlike IR who most of the time creates the tune and then get the lyrics for the tune.
But music composing is not about songs alone.. Name 10 movies, ok lets say 5 movies
known for rahman background score. Raaja's BGMs are still used in movies these days.
Even songs composing is not about getting the tune right. There is music involved like prelude and interlude. So, Pro-Raaja!!!!

Rahman plays around in his studio, records his tunes and the director selects them and then, it gets the lyrics. Prasoon Joshi reportedly took an year to write the lyrics for "Arziyan".

I said most of rahman songs not all songs.. even you can realize this if you carefully listen the flow of tune and rhythm in rahman's songs... swades was one of the very few noteworthy albums from rahman after year 2001.. The quality of rahman's tamil music started declining after 2001 may be there were better tunes and songs from Harris and yuvan.. I'd like to hear rahman of roja, bombay, taal, dilse...

@lalbhairec W.r.t b/g tunes, Bombay theme is the first that comes to my mind. I saw the movie when i was in school. But the music still lingers on. Then, swades. The longing for homeland brings tears to almost all listeners. If you dont beileve me, simply google "yeh jo desh hai tera". Listen to the closing credits of "Dil se". See if your prelude and interlude is there :). Nayakan has some brilliant piece of bg music. Jodha Akbar. Lagaan. I hope you've noticed the heavenly score in these movies

I have been listening to ARR's music since 1992 when Roja came out and have in my collection almost every hit song of his! In the same way I alsohave in my collection lots of hit songs of Ilayaraja mostly from 80s and 90s and today I listen more to Ilayaraja's tunes than ARR. I hardly listen to ARR's hits these days those used to listen to it a lot when they came ! They were good when they came but in long run it was Raja's tunes which earned a longer place in my heart
