Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Mazda win the 24-hour La Mans with a rotary engine before the sanctioning body outlawed the Wankel due to unfair power-to-weight ratio advantage? I'm more of a classic muscle car V8 kind of guy, but these little rotaries appear to be well designed/well thought out engines with approximately a third of the moving parts of a reciprocating engine and hydrogen fuel capabilities. @bzster Late reply, but yeah they did in the 787b race car. This engine is not out of one, but it uses a 4-rotor setup like the one in the race car did (this one was custom built for an rx7 by scoot in japan).

However they were allowed to race one last year but bizarrely Mazda managed to negotiated a 180kg weight advantage due to being so uncompetitive. With a detuned engine for reliability it tipped the balance in Mazdas favour. They certainly were not banned for being too good!! lmfao, only the rotary fan boys try to claim that one.

The beauty of a Wankel rotary engine is the simplicity. There is simply less parts in the engine that could go wrong, yes the apex seals go but when I had my Rx7 4 rotor I replaced them easily myself.
I also believe that the 4-rotor tends to look after its tips better than a twin or triple rotor due to more lineer power-up and faster warm up time.
@Tj1056 Made it myself from 2 spare engines. The crankshaft was customised. Did not improve the reliability or fuel efficiency but it was great fun. First heard about the Scoot verson 6 years ago and I thought "Could I make my own version"? Had an Rx-7 when at university, used the rented garage to do the work, used 2 out of 3 spare engines I bought (both brand new, the other was an Rx-8 unit), ordered a custom crankshaft , fitted another chamber and rotor, sorted the timing and it worked!
@Tj1056 It was not up to standard as the Scoot version though. They still say it was a one-off and nobody has doneit but I defy that. I moved onto better vehicles now but with traditional pistons, not unique as the Mazda. Not even Ferrari does it!
@ROCKSOLID19 I would say the beauty of the wankel rotary engine is that it is very "elegant" or "high-class" compared to the piston engine by being a lot simpler than the piston engine with all those parts. My GC8 STi gets 25mpg, and has a 15,9 gallon tank; making my distance to refuel almost 400 miles. so no - you cant go 40x the distance I do. Secondly, I also drive an SCCA prepped RX-7 FC3S, so why don't you grow up and get a real man's car that does require real skill. Yes I DO own a Subaru and rotary car, dude.

Wrong again idiot. The gain was more than the rotary even put out. I gained 200 h.p. and 200 ft/lbs of torque with the stock V8. The Rx7 with the rotary was slow.

They found that the wankel style rotor engine is almost ideal at combusting hydrogen... More bang per atom... Less costly than petrol if you seperate the water yourself (solar panels have done well at providing the energy for that.) Rotors just plain kick ass.
They did not see the u-tube videos of the drag racing rotary's action, or the rpm's these engines can sustain for much longer than a piston engine at less rpms before coming apart,most of the time the rotary survives where the pistons can't. Yeah shure these are oil injected engines like the 2 cycle piston engines, and may have to go away like the 2 strokes at the crack of the whip from the EPA,quit whining and enjoy the shear power/rpm's while there here.
People are afraid of technology, sure it has its flaws but the funny thing is it produces more power per cc than any piston motor. The only difference is people have been working on piston developement for years and years while this little guy (the rotary) has not had even a fraction of the research put into it. Have a look at "how stuff works".com for a good explanation. Capnapalm's explanation is not very good, as everyone knows, there are 4 cycles to combustion, not 3. A rotor does all 4 in it's own special way.

If you going to compare it to a cylinder, it would be a 1 stroke motor where each cylinder does combustion, exhaust and intake every time it goes up and down <- this being exactly why piston engines can't do what a rotary does.

there were some problems with the 6.0 lq4 truck motors when they were first released but that is the only problem with the ls series motors that i know of but gm recalled and replaced all the motors that had that problem

Too bad for you that tossing a rod is a very rare circumstance. However a rotary ruining is common. In case you were not aware, you have to completely disassemble the rotary to replace the seals. That was not smart to say at all.
In what planet is this rare? My dad has an 87 turbo rx-7 on 200K miles and it''s running perfectly fine. And from my research of you're godly LS1, they are known to burn oil and the block cracks on the lifter valley at normal running temp, where the rotary has no cams or valves, nor do they 'fall apart" over 4k RPMS. So "Mr. Ithinkz Iknoweverything" tell me how this was not smart, cmon I dare ya. *enter anoying redneck goofball laugh here*

@ROCKSOLID19 I would say the beauty of the wankel rotary engine is that it is very "elegant" or "high-class" compared to the piston engine by being a lot simpler than the piston engine with all those parts. @175myles Actually no smartass. Even if your scooter got between 120-150mpg, it still probably only has between a 1.5 and 1.8 gallon tank; limiting its range to less than 300 miles. My GC8 STi gets 25mpg, and has a 15,9 gallon tank; making my distance to refuel almost 400 miles. so no - you cant go 40x the distance I do. Secondly, I also drive an SCCA prepped RX-7 FC3S, so why don't you grow up and get a real man's car that does require real skill. Yes I DO own a Subaru and rotary car, dude.

@SonicProvocateur, I never said my scooter had an engine, And if you didn't notice, but in my first comment you mustn't realise that I am not dissing Subaru's or Rotary engine cars, in fact, the only cars worth buying with 4cylinder engines are cars with 4wd, and second, Rotary cars are expencive to modify, but flog competition in fully modified drags.

Wrong again idiot. The gain was more than the rotary even put out. I gained 200 h.p. and 200 ft/lbs of torque with the stock V8. The Rx7 with the rotary was slow.

They found that the wankel style rotor engine is almost ideal at combusting hydrogen... More bang per atom... Less costly than petrol if you seperate the water yourself (solar panels have done well at providing the energy for that.) Rotors just plain kick ass.

They did not see the u-tube videos of the drag racing rotary's action, or the rpm's these engines can sustain for much longer than a piston engine at less rpms before coming apart,most of the time the rotary survives where the pistons can't. Yeah shure these are oil injected engines like the 2 cycle piston engines, and may have to go away like the 2 strokes at the crack of the whip from the EPA,quit whining and enjoy the shear power/rpm's while there here.

People are afraid of technology, sure it has its flaws but the funny thing is it produces more power per cc than any piston motor. The only difference is people have been working on piston developement for years and years while this little guy (the rotary) has not had even a fraction of the research put into it. The only thing rotary engines handle like a champ is lots of oil. The thing uses more oil than a 2 cycle. LOL I know they can't handle horsepower because you see them for sale dirt cheap becuase the rotary failed again. I also know they can't handle the horsepower as they break down all the time, the owners get pissed, and replace them with a piston engine. I rarely see a rotary on the drag strip which says even more about it. They are junk. Accept the truth.

Have a look at "how stuff works".com for a good explanation. Capnapalm's explanation is not very good, as everyone knows, there are 4 cycles to combustion, not 3. A rotor does all 4 in it's own special way.

If you going to compare it to a cylinder, it would be a 1 stroke motor where each cylinder does combustion, exhaust and intake every time it goes up and down <- this being exactly why piston engines can't do what a rotary does.

there were some problems with the 6.0 lq4 truck motors when they were first released but that is the only problem with the ls series motors that i know of but gm recalled and replaced all the motors that had that problem

I don't care about rebuilding rotary engines because you toss a rod you have about 1500-3000 to put into a new engine. If the apex seals go out on a rotor, it's cheap even if the rotor housing get damaged. The rotary was designed to be simple and have ALOT less parts. So you tell me how badass you're LS1 is. Cmon, go ahead.

Too bad for you that tossing a rod is a very rare circumstance. However a rotary ruining is common. In case you were not aware, you have to completely disassemble the rotary to replace the seals. That was not smart to say at all.

In what planet is this rare? My dad has an 87 turbo rx-7 on 200K miles and it''s running perfectly fine. And from my research of you're godly LS1, they are known to burn oil and the block cracks on the lifter valley at normal running temp, where the rotary has no cams or valves, nor do they 'fall apart" over 4k RPMS. So "Mr. Ithinkz Iknoweverything" tell me how this was not smart, cmon I dare ya. *enter anoying redneck goofball laugh here*
