Everyone in The Who could lead sing but Moon.Leads backup vocals sucked or were non-existent.I know people that saw both live in the 70's and they all rated The Who a much better live band especially in the lead and backup vocals area, as well as the energy and pure excitement area of live performance. This is just Pete's opinion, deal with it Lead heads. Long live The Mighty Who!
I like Lead -pun intended-but The Who were a much better live band and were a more pioneering band on a much wider range of musicians and bands.Daltrey was a much stronger vocalist than Plant and a better show man as a front man. Entwhistle was, by far, a better bass guitarist than Jones. Pete was a much better writer and composer than Page.As far as I know he didnt stael another's work literally or do a bunch of songs that sounded like other's work like ol' Pagey. Moon was the shit bar none!
Wow, Pete, a mediocre guitarist (famous for the windmill, not much else) for the most overrated band speaking truthfully about his jealousy for a band he never thought would be successful. The Who has some good songs, but barely enough to make one album.
@ms95100 I guess Who's Next, The Who Sell Out, Live At Leeds, My Generation, and Who Are You just had one or two good songs on them? Tommy and Quadrophenia are DOUBLE ALBUMS by the way!Your musical ignorance is showing.Lead is the band that had two, three, or four really good songs per album, not The Mighty Who!And Lead didnt know when to stop a fucking song-Kashmir, When The Levee Breaks, for instance.
Truth be told, Zeppelin were wankers, except for Jones, who held the idiocy together through calculated notes, pauses, and careful theory. Townshend can shred, but he's more visionary... more tasteful. Ask anybody who saw them at Woodstock, the guy's intense. Page likes to pretend to play scales, but could never hack shredding live because he's an absurd alcoholic. Album versions of songs require hundreds of takes. But the guy can't provide "live". That being said, "Immigrant Song" rules.
Well, Pete- comfort yourself with the fact that The Who's discography is loaded with almost nothing but your original compositions, and Zep's with A LOT of ripped off blues and folk records. ;) (I love both bands before anybody starts, so you needn't bother...)
I'm 60, and I know what Pete is talking about. People my age grew up with the whole Beatle thing. I thought the Beatles were alright, but I preferred the Kinks and even the Dave Clark 5. I liked The Who, but not enough to buy an album. Same with Led Zeppelin. Then along came my favorite band of all time; the Ramones.
It's all about personal preference and taste. Any guitar player in any of the other bands I mentioned could leave Johnny Ramone in the dust technically on guitar. So what!
I don't think it's jealousy, people always try to put someone else down to prop themselves up. I feel the same that they never did it for me. I love the Who and the Stones, but Zep just seemed to lack something, I also couldn't stand Plants vocals. Perhaps they're not jealous, but just genuinely don't care for their music.
Just like the Keith Richards, Townsend cannot handle the fact that Zep completely dominated the 70's when each band was in their prime. It is interesting to note that Keith Moon and Roger Daltrey were very impressed by Zep.
@plantationful If you drove a Trans Am or a Mustang II and lived in the skids, Zeppelin was your band. They were adventurous, but no more than other bands. I'm surprised they're painted as such pioneers these days.
@SonofBrunhilde your statement is a symptom that leads me to assume you're a complete ignorant, superficial and narrow minded. Pete doesn't say the Zep suck, he just formulates a personal opinion about them having been in contact with the group as much as it needs to make up a personal thought. he says he can't bear them and that's all, just a manifestation of his tastes. have a little fucking respect for Mr Townshend.
@FenderPrestigionBass he was only doing "research"....he ought to be in fucking jail getting boiling water thrown over him the fucking ballroot....i quite liked the who though they were a good band
I love them as people, but I hate them as a band...? Sounds like a lot of sour grapes to me. (yeah, Pete was doing "research" I love that one!) He will also diss Hendrix as a guitar player if you ask him. The Who were a great band, but nothing they have to say carries much weight. Everybody's entittled to their opinion, and some opinions are fucked.
i will say this.. i like both. but Zeppelin deff take it.. no questions.. and it sounds a bit more like petes jealous, " they became so much bigger than the who. " boo fuckin hooo.. maybe if you were as talented as zepp... how ever, don"t wine and cry because your not the greatest band.. it's not about who"s better, it's about the MUSIC, christ ppl. thats why we listen to it.. ppl make a big to do about stupid shit.. can"t ya just enjoy the music???
Actually these bands are all good for beginners and teenagers. Start going deeper in music and you will no longer be satisfied with 3 chords songs with repeated solos and errors and errors and errors again and again in live shows. No rock musician comes close to any jazzist or fusion musician in the field of popular music.
@jayrock1987 When any member of Led Zeppelin can write something like Tommy and Quadrophenia come talk ... The Who was underated ..Zeppelin is way overated and were terrible live . I dont dislike Zeppelin at all . But saying The Who is Overated is just dumbe .. Its Always The Stones, The Beatles ,Hendrix ,and led Zeppelin
@cjf7991 I LOVE the WHO, but his resentment of ZEP is JEALOUSY and he alludes to that. Zeppelin were incredible. More INNOVATIVE and experimental than any other major band, and they don't get enough credit. EX: they did more time signatures than anyone else and rarely used the same rhythm twice. As a skilled musician I can tell you Zep were light years ahead of the Who.
@XanaduMountain i agree, just because led zep stoled so many song dosnt mean they was not a good band, they just was a band that stoled alot of songs that pissed off people like, jeff beck, eric clapton, howling wolf, pete townsend and many many more, Ian Anderson once said in the cream magazine, "Gee with my words and their music we would be the best band in the world"1 Meaning he knew they didnt write alot of the words" american black blues writters did. anyway please check out danny gatton!
@XanaduMountain I dont Resent Zeppelin .... Pete is a way better writer then Page but Page is a better guitar player .. Enwistle is way Superior of a Bass player of Jones ..He was just voted Best Bassist of all time . But JPJ Is a phenomenal musician . The Who were a much better live band as well . Most of Zeps studio albums were better . Keith Moon and John Bonham were Both Incredible Drummers .. But for someone to come on and say Petes a Pedophile .. Wrong
@cjf7991 Zeppelin , The Who ,The Stones and The Kinks were all far superior musicians then the Beatles . You gotta agree with that . ..But the Beatles paved the way .IMO The Beatles are terrible
@cjf7991 Hell No. The influences of the who the kinks, led zeppelin, and all those 70's group bands is limited to rock and metal. The Beatles are way more universal, they changed the whole indudstry, the whole way of making music, jazz musicians, folk musicians, pop musicians, rock musicians, even classical musicians take ideas from the beatles. the Stones are in that same league too. Led Zeppelin is cool but they no way influenced any other sphere more than rock and metal.
They wont allow comments on the Keith Richards opinion of Zep vid, but I could not disagree with him more. Straining at gnats that aren't even there. Zep was a power house of a band.
Led Zeppelin are the most overrated band of all time. That has been my opinion since I was 13 and it hasn't changed a bit. On the contrary, it's grown stronger as I got to know them better.
Pete's not the only one of my favorite musicians to diss on one of my favorite groups known as Led Zeppelin. Jack Bruce, another favorite musician of mine, slammed Led Zeppelin even harder then Pete Townshend in this video. Despite the fact that they both don't like Led Zeppelin, I'm still a fan of Townshend and Bruce. I look past their dislike on Led Zeppelin and look at their talents. People can't like everything. It's all about Freedom of Speech.
@ledzepman36 Hes not a Pedophile .. He was doing research and never even arrested . He does more charity work for kids with cancer than any other person Ive heard of and an amazing songwriter .. So what he dosent like Led Zeppelin He didnt like the Beatles either
In all honesty I wasn't a big British Rock Group Fan. But I like a couple of their albums. I was more for the Solo British Rock or Pop Singers like Eric Clapton,Rod Stewart,Tom Jones. Too me Cream and Humble Pie was the worst underrated British Rock Groups. The American Rock Pop Groups of the late 1960s and early 1970s were more variety favorites of mine. Their style was closer to the 1950s Rock a Billy & Blues plus American Soul
Led Zeppelin fans hated their beautiful syntheiser sound from In Through The Out Door from 1979. But I thought it was the best new thing Led Zeppelin had ever done other than their 2nd album Led Zeppelin II from late 1969
I never was really crazy about either Led Zeppelin or the Who. John Paul Jones and John Entwistle were the only thing that intrested me about them. But that is because Bass is my favorite. Plus one of the two Led Zeppelin albums I liked most was what Led Zeppelin fans most hated which was their last one with John Bonham called In Through The Out Door. The other only one is Led Zeppelin II
The Who albums as a whole were not exactly my cup of coffee. But I'm willing to admit even though I was never a big Who fan both albums Who's Next 1971 and Who Are You 1978 were dynamite. Their rest is crap though.
Envy has obviously dampened or at least suppressed his good taste in music... but he get points for honesty.Comparing the two is like comparing apples & oranges... completely different bands, styles, the whole vibe totally different,he of all people knows it. I guess taste in bands is subjective but C'mon man... " they're great guys "- but the music sux ? Forget apples & Oranges...sounds more like comparing Zeppelin's apples(& fame) w/ his own Sour Grapes. Pete lighten up- it was 40 F-ing yrs ago.
"Your band is going down like a led zeppelin, it's never going to take off" Pete Townshend to Jimmy Page and Robert Plant hence the name Led Zeppelin. Look it up. Page and Plant do have a great sense of humor. lol I think Townshend is just jealous.. How long is he going to hate.. Haters are not exactly intelligent..
@PrinceOfLight4 To be accurate, it was actually Keith Moon who made that statement. Nonetheless, he continued to be friendly with them after their success.
I'm a massive Who fan, but it's clear that Pete is jealous that Jimmy has gotten more credit for his superior guitar playing than Pete has for his superior song-writing.
I don't understand why people get so angry. Look at the dislike bar. We all like different things, that's the beauty of the art forms, music, painting, film, etc. If you hate someone because they don't like something you do, that really points to insecurity in you more than anything else. You can't say which band is "better" because, what are the criteria for "better"?
Records sold? That means Michael Jackson is "better" than Led Zeppelin. Live and let live, they are both extraordinary bands.
@bobdy9988 Agreed. I am fortunate enough to have been blessed with an eclectic personality and taste in most things in life. In 'ROCK' alone my taste runs from Steely Dan to Metallica. Led Zep is one of my fav. bands but I also like the Who. Considering the diversity of Zep's music I don't understand why Peter doesn't like ANY of their tunes but it just doesn't do it for him. Oh well. Eddie Van Halen has criticized Jimmy Page for being great in studio but poor live! 'Different strokes' etc......
well, hat's a matter of taste... i think both had incredible live-shows aroun 1970, but the who weren't able to produce a good studio-album, while led zeppelins records were incomparable for their time...i mean listen to it, the who sounds like some shitty schoolboys, not like a rock group on ANY "THE WHO" RECORD... so far, shut up, pete
@TheVoodoomaan Tommy is better than the entire Zeppelin catalog. BTW my favorite band is Led Zeppelin and Tommy is one of the greatest albums of all time and just happened to be a studio album. So.....you're wrong.
@indian5 well, thommy is a great piece of music, no question... but the studio performance is really lame, compared to the life-performance of thommy, for example at lead or isle of wights, where they rock...what i meant is that the who doesn't rock in studio, everything's soft and gently played and sung, compared to LZ s records...know what i mean?
@zazozung Plant>Daltry - Better vocalist, more range and could actually write songs (also played guitar, nod)
Page>Townsend - wrote better songs that rocked way way harder. F.Y.I. it's a common practice in blues to play other peoples songs. ALL British rock groups ripped of American Southern Black music.
John Paul Jones> - far more skilled bass player, could write songs and could play the piano far better than Townsend
Bonham>Moon (true it's close, but Bonham had a much better feel)
@danharris188 I guess they're so close it becomes a matter of opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love LZ and have for many years. BTW, no way is Jones a better bassist than Entwhistle. Even Jones would concede that Entwhistle was the best bassist of all time. And Entwhistle wrote some legendary songs: Borris The Spider, My Wife, Had Enough, 905, to name a few.
@zazozung I'll give you that, from a musicianship standpoint it is really close. Don't get me wrong I'm a big Who fan as well. Entwhistle is great, I don't know about the greatest ever, but that's a whole other conversation. Pete's attitude has just always rubbed me the wrong way. I grew up loving Who but my view of them was kinda shattered a few years ago when those allegation came up against Townsend. I really hope they're not true, but I can't look at him the same way.
Led Zeppelin plagerized a lot of there music. The first album was almost all stolen from other artists. Same with Stairway. You could say that Led Zeppelin are the greatest cover band of all time.
@zazozung by the way, plagiarizing other people's work in music or any other art form is as old as the hills. not saying its right, but you have to acknowledge the fact that people like Shakespeare also "stole" their work. Others include Sinatra, Presley, and more. Technically, no matter what, everybody steals from someone else at some point because when someone gets influenced by something else, they are indirectly stealing from that source.
I think Pete is just fucking around. just like when Jack Bruce said that Zeppelin was horrible a few years back, it turned out to be just a joke. English humor (humour) amongst friends :)
If you saw The Who live anytime between late '69 and mid '74 then I need say no more. For myself, 'the' gig was a rainy Thanksgiving night, 1973 at the Forum in Inglewood. If you were there, you know. If you weren't, you'd never believe me.
The Zeps were great, had good songs, were exciting live (although guitar & drum solos went on a bit too long) and proved that again back in '07 (a fantastic gig!).
The Who? On a level reached by no one...before OR since.
just because he doesn't like led zep, you all get so bent outta shape jesus, does every one on the whole planet have to like them. I tried to get into them but robert plants shrieking always made me sick. plus led zeps lyrics are by and large pretty atrocious, always whinging about some woman puke
@vincentmack37 Keith Richards doont like them either. He said that LZ was just Jimmy Page. There's something about this 60's bands that they dont like LZ. Pretty interesting!
Don't fight folks... You're all from the 'peace, love and music era' so there should be bonhomie between you... It's not just the music, it's also about the era to which they belong. The Who invented the concept album and don';t forget that. I'd like to hear Pete on Floyd. By the way, Daltrey and Plant have the same dressing style. And I like The Who's stage performances a lot better than Zeppelin's.
Kieth Moon and Bonzo were mates and frankly they are what set their bands apart from the other bands of the era . I love both bands and I don't care if Entwistle and Jonesy wanted to kill each other , or if Plant and Daltry hate each others guts . ( Plant and Daltry are friends also , for the record)
@danharris188 At least make an intelligent argument instead of resorting to low brow insults. Townshend is no pedophile. An argument can be made that Led Zeppelin plagerized a shitload of music.
@zazozung Here's a argument for you, he admitted to access child pornography website to conduct "research". This was only after the police got involved of course.
I think he IS jealous..If you look at the statistics for the most albums sold in the US by each band, you'll see why he's jealous..it appears that us Americans like Zep better. (111 Million albums for Zep and a measly 21 Million for The Who) I went to the RIAA website for that info. And I am also in the majority..Led Zeppelin forever!!!
Also in the same interview, he expressed his view that the Synthesizer would become the focal instrument in the next decade and that the electric guitar would soon become obsolete. hahahaha That was before Nirvana, Metallica, White Stripes, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Live, Foo Fighters, RHCP, etc. He's pretty much wrong most of the time. Just laugh as he likes to stir up shit :) Poor deluded Pete.
Pete is renowned for his controversial comments but people don't really listen to him too much lol. He went on record in a 1981 Rolling Stone interview that he saw The Beatles as "light music with an odd masterpiece thrown in" . And then went on to say in the next breath - straight-faced - that ABBA were much more tied to Rock& Roll than The Beatles. He is a complicated man and clearly conflicted. To say there is nothing of theirs he likes at all is purely nonsense
"They became so much bigger than The Who in so many ways... I never liked them." Wow I thought Pete was talented enough to be secure and accept the fact of the matter, but as much as I love the Who, Pete you are a jealous little bitch. Quite tarnishing the legacy of yourself and your band.
@amore101 - Are you sure it's jealousy? Maybe he really doesn't like what they did. I find people attack and accuse others who have unpopular opinions as being "jealous". Isn't that kind of a lazy and obvious response, but one that may not be correct?
@shimokita2 You sound like an idiot. If you had reading comprehension, and the social skills above a 5 year old, You wouldn't have to ask me. I even quoted the man for fuck's sake...
The Who and Zeppelin are 2 of the greatest bands of all time, maybe the 2 greatest, some of these comments are just plain silly. If you don't think Led Zeppelin and The Who are 2 of the best rock bands ever, you just don't know what you're talking about.
@JRCrowley I think it's a question of songwriting(The Who's forté),over virtuosity(Led Zep's. The Who wrote songs that have become standards i.e.e that anyone can play . try doing justice to a led Zep song and it doesn't quite work.Only Led Zep can do justice to Led Zep songs.Anyone can do a version of a Who song. They are great little singalong songs. And i am certain that Pete 'sucks it' all the time, with whosoever he pleases, and speaks very highly of you whenever you come up in conversation.
@JRCrowley Pete Townshend is actually a far better songwriter than anyone in Led Zeppelin. The Who's music became much more complex and layered than anything Zeppelin did. Also, Robert Plant's voice had such a short lifespan that it's kind of sad. I love LZ, but in my opinion The Who rocked harder, wrote better songs, and were simply a better band.
@zazozung I think JP's and JPJ's riffs overshadow Townshend's songs. There is also a "pocket" in LZ's music, whereas the Who seem to me to be sloppier. I think the groove is what matters the most, the "feel", especially in backbeat oriented rock music. And Plant's voice in his early zep days I think puts him in the same league as Freddie Mercury :)
@JRCrowley : Pete should have taken a leaf out of the Sabbath book.
On "rival" Bonzo : “I miss him still today,” Ward says. “Whenever I hear Stairway to Heaven, when John plays his famous triplets at the end ,... I can still see him kicking the crap out of my drums... (google Rock Cellar Magazine's interview with Bill Ward about the mysterious Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin session )
@JRCrowley Thats total babel. I can't imagine my musical taste without one or the other. Bonham, Page. Entwistle, Moonie... No offense Pete, I love you but you are almost the weakest link if I line up ALL the members of both bands, even with your song writing ability (which isnt my favorite thing about you). I know people will be different for we all have our reasons but for me.. #1. Page #2. Entwistle #3. Bonham #4. Moon #5. Jones #6. Plant #7. Townsend #8. Daltry
Okay so what I got out of all that British mumbling is that he has never liked them because they became so much bigger than The Who. Umm, okay. I think Keith Richards's review of Led made more sense - "As a band yanno they neva reely took uff. Led Zeppelin is Jimmy Page. Shy boy"
Aww come on Pete do we sence a hint of envyness in the air haha! To each his own I guess you still the man Pete nobody can strumm a Gitar like you though but Jimmy is the riff master lol!!
I am a drummer and love Bonzo but prefer Ginger Baker. I listen to led zeplin but somthing just doesn't work. There isn't a landscape in the work other than their 4th album. most of the time they sound like 4 amazing musicians all playing together but from different bands?
@MARTIN512610 Totally disagree. If Zep 4 "sounds brown" then tell me Houses of the Holy doesn't sound bright orange/yellow. Or that Zep three doesn't sound worldly. And as far as the members go I agree but you've said it yourself: Zep are like a band you would make up if you could pick the best of the best in each of their roles. That they made amazing songs together is just icing on the deity cake.
It's understandable how he would feel this way-consider his PERSONAL perspective.... not to get too mired in the muck of rock scene philosophy, but The Who were first. It's BOUND to be hard for Pete or anyone in his position to get past that and hear the genuine article that was Led Zeppelin. Us peeps who were born much later and raised on all these Brit gods think they ALL rock in their own way...but we weren't bustin it out in the London scene, and comparing our shit, so to speak
petes just a bit jealous, cos pagey was getting action from 13 year old girls, and all he could do was collect kiddie porn as a middle aged geezer. awwww diddums pete. someone put his toys back in his pram for him.
townshend is a puss.the who was a good band but they cant dream about being in the same league as the stones.the beatles wrote the book, the stones perfected the art and the buiseness end of it.zeppelin was right there with the stones, but too short lived.and the who was just a notch or two below zeppelin.
I think Townshend is an amazing musician first of all. But as a person he's alway's been a little more cockier than Led Zeppelin. I loved The Who "but" Led Zeppelin are the Gods.
I dont dislike Zeppelin at all . But saying The Who is Overated is just dumbe .. Its Always The Stones, The Beatles ,Hendrix ,and led Zeppelin
cjf7991 5 days ago
@cjf7991 I LOVE the WHO, but his resentment of ZEP is JEALOUSY and he alludes to that. Zeppelin were incredible. More INNOVATIVE and experimental than any other major band, and they don't get enough credit. EX: they did more time signatures than anyone else and rarely used the same rhythm twice. As a skilled musician I can tell you Zep were light years ahead of the Who.
XanaduMountain 5 days ago
@XanaduMountain i agree, just because led zep stoled so many song dosnt mean they was not a good band, they just was a band that stoled alot of songs that pissed off people like, jeff beck, eric clapton, howling wolf, pete townsend and many many more, Ian Anderson once said in the cream magazine, "Gee with my words and their music we would be the best band in the world"1 Meaning he knew they didnt write alot of the words" american black blues writters did. anyway please check out danny gatton!
SuperFirewire1 4 days ago
@XanaduMountain I dont Resent Zeppelin .... Pete is a way better writer then Page but Page is a better guitar player .. Enwistle is way Superior of a Bass player of Jones ..He was just voted Best Bassist of all time . But JPJ Is a phenomenal musician . The Who were a much better live band as well . Most of Zeps studio albums were better . Keith Moon and John Bonham were Both Incredible Drummers .. But for someone to come on and say Petes a Pedophile .. Wrong
cjf7991 4 days ago
@cjf7991 Zeppelin , The Who ,The Stones and The Kinks were all far superior musicians then the Beatles . You gotta agree with that . ..But the Beatles paved the way .IMO The Beatles are terrible
cjf7991 4 days ago
@cjf7991 Hell No. The influences of the who the kinks, led zeppelin, and all those 70's group bands is limited to rock and metal. The Beatles are way more universal, they changed the whole indudstry, the whole way of making music, jazz musicians, folk musicians, pop musicians, rock musicians, even classical musicians take ideas from the beatles. the Stones are in that same league too. Led Zeppelin is cool but they no way influenced any other sphere more than rock and metal.

Bonham>Moon (true it's close, but Bonham had a much better feel)
danharris188 2 weeks ago
@danharris188 I guess they're so close it becomes a matter of opinion. Don't get me wrong, I love LZ and have for many years. BTW, no way is Jones a better bassist than Entwhistle. Even Jones would concede that Entwhistle was the best bassist of all time. And Entwhistle wrote some legendary songs: Borris The Spider, My Wife, Had Enough, 905, to name a few.
zazozung 2 weeks ago
@zazozung I'll give you that, from a musicianship standpoint it is really close. Don't get me wrong I'm a big Who fan as well. Entwhistle is great, I don't know about the greatest ever, but that's a whole other conversation. Pete's attitude has just always rubbed me the wrong way. I grew up loving Who but my view of them was kinda shattered a few years ago when those allegation came up against Townsend. I really hope they're not true, but I can't look at him the same way.

@zazozung by the way, I think the Lennon/McCartney songwriting duo is better than Townshend's, Page's, or Jones' songwriting capabilities anyways

Led Zeppelin plagerized a lot of there music. The first album was almost all stolen from other artists. Same with Stairway. You could say that Led Zeppelin are the greatest cover band of all time.
zazozung 2 weeks ago
@zazozung Yeah, Kashmir and Achilles Last Stand are such knock offs of Pat Boone's best work.
DasGoldenBoy 2 weeks ago
@zazozung by the way, plagiarizing other people's work in music or any other art form is as old as the hills. not saying its right, but you have to acknowledge the fact that people like Shakespeare also "stole" their work. Others include Sinatra, Presley, and more. Technically, no matter what, everybody steals from someone else at some point because when someone gets influenced by something else, they are indirectly stealing from that source.

@JRCrowley pete's jealous, he said so, zeppelin was bigger (and way better) than the who.
fancyfripouille 2 weeks ago
@JRCrowley Pete Townshend is actually a far better songwriter than anyone in Led Zeppelin. The Who's music became much more complex and layered than anything Zeppelin did. Also, Robert Plant's voice had such a short lifespan that it's kind of sad. I love LZ, but in my opinion The Who rocked harder, wrote better songs, and were simply a better band.
zazozung 2 weeks ago
@zazozung I think JP's and JPJ's riffs overshadow Townshend's songs. There is also a "pocket" in LZ's music, whereas the Who seem to me to be sloppier. I think the groove is what matters the most, the "feel", especially in backbeat oriented rock music. And Plant's voice in his early zep days I think puts him in the same league as Freddie Mercury :)
