  • nice nice nice! like your style!

  • Very very nice cover, makes me wanna learn it so bad.

  • Mikaels growls sound really cool in the background

  • I love your ride...

  • probably my fave opeth song. great job! kudos for the tool poster too. both are amazing bands. if you havnt heard of porcupine tree get on it right now!

  • Very well played! You can take a look at my drum covers if you're interested :) thanks!

  • a little slow man

  • A very nice cover bro, Keep the good work.! you have places to go :D

  • Hey, I dig that china. Do you mind telling me what it is?

  • This was one of the first (if not the first) drum videos I ever saw... I was heavily influenced. It looks less impressive now but I'm still very greatful :)

  • Great attempt man!!!!!!!!!

Needs some tightening up, but you basically got it all down!

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang. Good cover.

  • Dude it's good that you are trying...but it has nothing to do with the real song especially starting from min 6.09 and the double bass part.....no offense

  • 8:16 8:19 niceeee : ))

  • As I can see here this is classed as a 'cover' actual drums are a bit different. nevertheless - good work.

  • kid....you're gonna be great. keep at it and you'll be great. how old are you? ...if you wanna see my playing check on quiet prove loud on here and we have only one vid but it'll let you know that i actually do play drums.

  • uuuuu I love your snare..

  • haha this kids face makes my day :)

  • nice cover. it just seemed weird for me cause your lefty but keep playin man

  • eh its alright you could do better

  • why dont play on a lefty set

  • cool another lefty that drums like me. power to us

  • FUCK ZILDJIAN MOTHERFUCKERS

  • I'm from Argentina, and idk what happen with Zildjian cymbals, can you tell me?

  • sabian got better

  • hell yes. sabian where its at

  • idk they used 2 be great and sounded great but then they got real thrashy and break way 2 easy

  • sabian and paiste are the best

  • nice screen name dude. systematic chaos

  • I'm left handed too, even when I play righty (I play lefty 99% of the time), I'm still holding the stick firmly. That's a poor excuse for improper technique

  • His playing is fine so stfu about technique.

  • no he's not cock much

He's losing stick control from holding it with his pinky and he's also losing strength and speed

  • i agree....

  • I'd rather not, thanks.

  • Good cover but a little constructive criticism: hold the sticks firmer. Your pinky is hanging lose when it shouldn't be left out of the stick.

  • i think he knows how he's holding it, + hes left handed

  • te se mpunta l pedale

  • 45 thumbs up!! :P

  • some mistakes... BUT, cant be that strict! good job man!!!!!!!!! 5 stars....

  • Overall good job, I think the mic on the snare is a little too close and the bass drum is a little too soft. Toms and cymbals sound amazing though

  • decent cover. it seems like your playing it relativly accurately, but the feel just isn't there. With enough work you could probably get it, its just not there yet. 4****

  • nice job :)

do work on that syncing issue tho..

  • very good man. nice cover.

  • I like that snare. Nice job.

  • tune your snare a little more low!

its so tight that us killing the response of walnut!! trust me on this one :D

  • I agree. I've got the 14x5.5 Walnut and I've only recently started tuning it low. I was missing out the whole time I've had that snare tuned tight! Tuning it low is definitely the way to go.

  • ahh, you play open handed as well : )

just wondering how to came to play open handed - were you left handed but didnt want to be awkward? (thats my reason)

I have my kit set up with no cymbals on the right as i tend to ride on any of them though, so, for instance

What would you do if you needed to ride on your china?

  • I can play both ways but I feel more comfortable leading with my left, so if I had to ride my china, i would use my right hand.

  • @enemytopublic Thats pretty cool dude. You did great. I always try to mix it up every once in a while and some times I find a little comfort in open hand as well but I revert right back. Its fun to change up some times to get your mind working in a different way and trying another aproach at playing. I feel doing that helps to discover and create new stuff.

  • @enemytopublic Good style. Open handed has some great advantages, you are more free and develop both hands

  • hey man, I think you're pretty good. I always like watching open handed drummers, I think it's interesting to watch. keep jamming, you're on to some thing.

  • thanks a bunch bro.

  • To who ever made the last comment, I'm sorry i removed it, i meant to hit reply.

But i'm not sure what you are talking about...it's my drum track throughout the whole thing, with of course the drum track from the actual track underneath and very quiet.

  • wow that snare sounds nice!

what heads are on it and how is it tuned?

  • Evans Power Center over Hazy 300 with Gibraltar 42 strand snare wires.

Reso is medium tight, batter varies (in this case it was probably pretty high)

  • cool :D i saw opeth live two years ago, best fucking gig i ever seen... anyway i got to this video because of the snare, it seems to sound good.. can you give me advise please? is it cool for a sort of doom/psych kind of sound?

  • this snare has an amazing range. Throw a PS3 batter on it and tune it low, and it'll be perfect for doom.

  • loosen up some bro, but your doing good for only 4 years of playing

  • you have a bit of work to do, but keep the ghost notes goin', your groove is pretty good...

  • pretty sick, but it sounded, to me, that you could use a bit more kick. I didn't really hear it very well compared to everything else.

I also thought it was kinda funny to see you playing lefty with your set setup for a righty.

    anyways, not bad.

    cheers

  • Aha, so you're saying that tuning the bottom head considerably higher than the top, you'll get this type of sound with the M Birch... Thanks for the tip! I'm just going to try it on my drums too :D

  • ...or is it just the mics that do all the magic?

  • on this setup i have EC2's over the stock heads. Stock heads are tuned relatively high and the EC2's are pretty low. Gives me a nice tone with lots of body.

There is actually no eq on any of this audio.

  • your toms sound great indeed! can you specify your heads setup and the way you tuned them? it seems to me that the usual tom sound of mapex m birch is kind of boxy, definitely unlike yours here.

  • dude, ur toms, are amazing sounding

  • haha i dont have a web cam or a working drums set but seeing how i understand what a flam drag is i could house this cover

  • pretty good you just need to tighten everything (playing wise up) its a bit loose and sloppy but other wise pretty good dude.

  • great job

  • Are you lefthanded ?

  • Did you get a tab for this?

  • No, i learned it by ear. It's not that difficult.

  • Ya, I just wanted to know if you have a source, the only tab place I know is ttabs and it doesn't have very many.

  • Not sure...i haven't even looked at a drum tab in about 2 and a half years.

  • anyone can reply to this message- do these drums sound good without mics?

  • yes

  • you stop the vid at 8m46 to make your dobule bass godd enoguth i think or am i wrong? it sounds like 2 videos diferents....but nice work :)

  • i screwed that part up the first time so i just started recording from there again.

  • Awesome sounding kit. You sure know how to tune it... I don't see why would you need rings for your toms. And I'm definately getting one of those walnut snares.

  • work on your fluidity and motion, as well as buy some rings for your toms. They resonate way too much. You could also try raising your hats a lil higher to make it easier to play. ALSO work on your stick grip, its very loose and your pinky is all over the place. Btw since your left handed you should try playing on a left handed kit where you play cross-over, might feel better.

  • cross handed is a stupid, restircive method of drumming which when you think about it is just plain wrong.

the essence of being a good drummer is staying relaxed, and being in such a restrictive position goes against that.

raising your hihats when playing open handed is the complete wrong thing to do - if anything they should be lower - you're think of playing cross handed

also, playing on a left handed kit is awkward - imagine setting up live shows and this guy's strong foot may be his right

  • The essence of a drummer is to drum until he/she dies, It doesnt matter what way a drummer plays, Just as long as it suits him/her.

I know its your opinion but it seems as if you enforcing everyone to play open handed and its as if you are calling cross handed players idiots because to you they are playing wrong when they arent. They play how they want, You play how you want, Leave it as that

  • My point is that open handed is the natural way - no one would play cross handed if they hadn't seen other people playing like that and assumed it was the right way.

People just assume that open is the awkward way but if you think about it, it really isn't.

  • Do you ever play with your hands crossed? are you left or right handed?

but I feel lil bit shame about myself now:) You rule:)

  • I can see a marshall stack back there, you play guitar as well? how do you find the time? haha

  • that is my opinion you fucking moron

  • Duuude, you definitely have style, keep it up

  • Open handed for the win!!!

  • good man : )

  • Mapex!

  • Awesome

  • yeh man sabians rape zildjian cymbals in the ass.

  • there would be no sabian without zildjian, dumbass.

there is no better cymbal. it's all opinion.

    grow up.

  • yup yup. sabian was only formed when a member of the zildjian family left the company. that's fact. it's da troof. look it up. realy.

  • Just bought this set, and I love it. Btw, nice amp too

  • Openhand :D

  • veryy nice

    you have left handed ellegance

    :}

  • get a drumagog for your bass so it clicks

  • try lifting the sm57 on the snare up about 1-2 inches and face it directly at the center of the snare. thatll give you a nice fatter sound.

  • Yeah i need to experiment with my mic placement some more. I bought tom clips so it's kind of hard to get them in the position i want. Maybe in the future i'll buy stands.

  • nice - i like it

  • which crash do you like more ?? the a custom or the aax ??

  • AAX for sure. Much more powerful and has much more sustain.

  • for the music i play, AAX, but the a custom is still great.

  • work on your timing, transitions too, lot of mistakes...

  • Thanks, i'm starting to work with a metronome again, i've been neglecting it for a while.

  • ah ok never mind ha.

  • In the future i may setup a small second kit left handed just to get my left food up to speed.

  • Did you ever try turning your kit around left handed like? because watching you it seems you lead with your left side and I know your playing open hand but it might be an idea to switch around your kit, id say you'd find it a lot easier to get those fills down with better timing.

  • I actually have tried that for the sole purpose of being able to play ambidextrously. My left foot is nowhere near as developed as my right.

  • E poi cazzo,manca la parte finale!

  • La suono meglio io...

  • need...metronome

  • grait!

  • your toms are tune way to high, aside from that nice drumming! get a nice punch out of them and they'll fit with the music perfect... same with snare your chokeing it

  • the toms aren't tuned that high, they're actually pretty low. It's just because they're 10 and 14" toms.

Usually i would use 12/16 but the head on my 12 broke.

I think its the youtube quality that messed up the snare sound because it sounded fine in the original recording.

  • Rhythm is awkward at times. You should practice with a metronome.

  • Great Cover. Everything about yu reminds me of Josh Eppard from Coheed, but you're a lot more skilled tbh.

  • yo dude, i can see ur strugling lil bit with timein and transtions between the set... why u bother video tapin this left handed with mistakes... just do it right handed, nd nail like a moww fuckkah!.. but good job! :P :P

  • he probably just plays open-handed all the time...

anyway, nice job. Couple pieces of advice, if you don't mind. As most drummers do, you tend to rush a little on the fills. Practice more with a metronome (as all of us need to do :p). Other issue is independence. In the section where lopez plays 3's on the ride (right in the beginning), you seem to be playing something else. it's just and-a-one, and-a-one on the ride. It's harder independence-wise, but just work it through slow.

  • thanks, yeah there is a few mistakes. Usually i play it much better. I guess i got camera shy.

And as pastor1us said, i always play left handed.

To pastor1us, thanks for the tips, i'm definitely going to start working on this to get it perfect. Usually when i play to a song i just get the basic groove down and improvise fills and stuff, but opeth deserves better than that:P. Thanks a lot for the tips though. I'll definitely work on it.

  • Hey dude, you've played it nice, good work! ^3^

  • I can play this song and I love playing to it.. it's fucking awesome :) The only part I have a hard time at going is at 04:00 approximately. I can't make it through that part without strugglin like hell.. I do not use double bass either so It's probably more troubling. :S But the song is very fun to play with :) well played^^ could of been better though;P

  • Nice drumming! You have a GREAT tom sound, I see you're using D2s, do you have to do a lot of EQ to make them sound good or is the recording here pretty natural? And how do you like the D6? I've been debating over what kick mic to upgrade too and I keep hearing good things about the D6, like that it doesn't take much EQ to sound great, would you agree?

  • in this video, the only eq i used was on the bass drum and it wasn't that much. The toms are completely natural, exactly what the mic's pick up.

I haven't had much experience with other kick mics. I have a cheap $50 one and this audix. The Audix is leaps and bounds ahead of it. Sorry i couldn't give you more help.

  • No that actually helps a lot. I've got pretety bad bass/tom mics from a kit. I switched to an SM57 for snare, and then to cheap dynamic mics as overheads (until I get better condensers). My tom mic is alright but doesn't really do much to help the drum shine, and if I put it close enough to pick up the lows of the tom then the sound is distorted. Same with the bass drum. So at least I know the D6 would be much better than that, and your tom sound is incredible for not having any EQ! So thanks!

  • Garbage cover

  • you're garbage

    this was good

  • just wondering...where are your videos?

  • Opeth is hard to play ^^ but you play very good :)

  • Yeah, lefty or not, the fact that you're playing open on a right handed kit will probably make you a much more creative drummer in the long run. Good playing, and keep hard at it!

  • thanks man.

  • Nice one!

  • I liked it.Nice take.

Im thinking of purchasing a Black Panther maple.

    Walnut 14x5.5

    Maple 14x6 or 14x5.5

If you wanna leave a comment about the snare.Anything would be appreciated.

    cheers

  • Some minor timing mistakes.. Nice try nonetheless..

  • Good cover matey.

  • low hats are LOW! other than that your setup looks really comfy.

  • Open handed.

    Interesting.
