i saw her riding on a 5 year old mare...well,the horse is trained..but you can´t tell me that a 5 year old mare doesn't have a mind on his own...if he doesn't want to do that stuff,he won't do anything.she won't go very far.i've read what aradiadiane wrote, and i can only agree...it's cruel how much the trail do move, not only in spins...but the canter at 4:21 is awesome...i love doing this in the meadow too :)
aradiadiane- do everyone a favor a keep your comments to yourself-- you obviously don't know reining and, more importantly, you don't know what you are talking about. Stacey Westfall is a great trainer, rider, & person- don't pass judgement, or imply something that is false. Don't hate just because she is way better than you..I'D LIKE TO SEE YOU TRY!
Really? I didn't know that about reining horses. I guess the tails do move some in canter pirouettes, but not as much as this horse's move in a spin. Thank you for sharing.
Her horse is wrenching his tail quite a bit for a 'happy and trusting' horse, as I've heard their relationship called. Kind of makes me wonder what her training sessions at home look like.
You don't know what you're talking about. The only way to keep a reining horse from swishing it's tail is to do a tail block which is cruel. Get your facts straight before you insult someone for taking years to train an animal like this. This girl has wonderful training techniques that she shares with others, often for free.
You're right- I DON'T know anything about reining. In dressage, a wrenching tail is a sign of an unhappy horse. And it's the truth- I really DO wonder what her training sessions look like. Every discipline has practices associated with it that are cruel. I'm not saying that she does or should do any of them. I'm just wondering what they look like when they aren't in the show arena. For all I know, her horse could be annoyed at the crowd noise, and perfectly relaxed at home.
After seeing many of the training techniques used in dressage, I wouldn't talk about cruel training techniques. I've seen how you teach a horse to trot in place. That's cruel.
There are cruel practices in EVERY discipline, and cruelty-free training methods with the same results. It's done by individuals, not the discipline as a whole, no matter what style of riding or driving you prefer. There are even cruel trainers in the natural horsemanship circles. And again, I'm NOT saying that Stacy Westfall is cruel. I'm saying I would love to see how she gets her horse to do all that reining stuff. Please read with a cool head, like pinkweasel below, before you get offended.
i love how everyone is so touchy. get over your discipline and just appericate that you get the time to spend with your animal. no discipline is greater than the other.
So incredible.....make sure you look for the video of her championship run in 2006, where she rode to Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dyin'" in memory of Stacy's father, who had just died 24 days earier. Incredible trust and spirituality between this horse and rider!!
The song is Live like you were dying Tim Mcgraw

aradiadiane, horses swat their tails when they are upset, they also swat their tails to help keep their balance...

Where is she from? Ihave a relative with the same last name.... Amazing video!!
It appears she is using her hands like she is holding the reins... horses are so sensitive to all those movements..... what a great horse!
