John Cleese definitely got a lot of mileage out of that Vox Pop camera! After this sketch, the "Man on the Street" interviews and "A Policeman near Rotting Deans" it more than paid for itself!
I think this is the quintessential Python sketch. How do you explain it to someone? Well, there's these two blokes dressed in safari suits, standing by the side of a canal and the smaller once prances forwards and backwards slapping the big one in the face with two small fish... Funny every time!
yup this is from IMDb: "The Pythons did almost all of their own stunts, including Graham Chapman (a qualified mountaineer) reading a sketch while hanging upside-down on a rope, and Michael Palin plummeting 15 feet into a canal in "The Fish-Slapping Dance" after John Cleese smacks him in the head with a trout."
Originally it was used by Iranians (5000BC), the Swastika featured on the fish is the Buddhist version - symbolizing good luck, welfare, prosperity and/or victory. The Nazis used a "right-facing" Swastika on a 45(o) angle (that is supposed to be a degree sign), the Swastika on the fish is a "left-facing" 90(o) rotation, often symbolizing the sun in the 90(o) form. I dont care if anyone rates me up or down for this, but i thought i would fill in the info...
And the japaneese use the symbol too. Don't remeber if it was a right or left facing swastika though. You can actully see a swastika on Ichigos katana in Bleach iirc.
well it all depends, there were actually several nazi-like parties in the Japan/China area many years before the Hitlerist regime started. but you would most likely find the buddhist version floating around, most of the buildings (excepting monasteries etc.) with right-facers were torn down and replaced...
@QuannanHade I appreciate that you pointed this out. I might have done so myself if you hadn't. I might have started with "Nice fish at the end," and then somehow worked something in about my Jewish background and how I don't let that interfere with the fight to reclaim the Swastika.
@Eckendenker I had not realised this when watching this clip. This is the first version I had seen, and is woefully incomplete when it comes to the resulting fish animation.
However, that it is German is hardly the point now, is it? :P
It may be a German fish, in this context, but the symbol remains firmly of non-nazi origin.
@QuannanHade - The word swastika means well being I think. But you are wrong about the orientation of it. They go either way in hinduism and buddhism.. left or right facing

Shockwave474 1 year ago
@QuannanHade Actually, the Nazis also used 90 degree swastikas, and swastikas facing to the left, which you can see in some of their banners.
It just so happens that the 45 degree right-facing swastika is the most common.

Upon reflection, there are many scenes where Michael Palin jumps/falls into water. He must have enjoyed it.

Walking off a boat in full naval dress in a raging British sea is enjoyable? Yow.
Look at the 'Bicycle Trip' episode where he falls off a 10-foot embankment in the woods, on a bicycle, in the dark! Looks genuinely painful.
