Awesome to see this at the Beacon show on 9/17. This All Too Mobile Home, Second Arrangement and American Lovers were also cool, but this and Dr. Wu were the best. Now, if only they would play King of the World...
They played this at the Beacon tonight (9/17/2011), as part of the Rarities set list. Also, American Lovers, This All Too Mobile Home, The Second Arrangement, and an early version of Jack of Speed.
The begining reminds me of '' Have a Cigar '' by Pink Floyd. Its got that same R&B Jazz/ phsychadelic sound. I love this track. It would fit perfect on The Royal Scam album if you ask me.
@mimicry88 Caught this at the beacon on rareities night, It was great. pretty casual show, not too packed and the donald made sure to explain the origins of all of the rare b side material, such as the bear and second arrangement.
I'm reminded of an old Snl sketch where Mike Myers acting as a chinese father in America to his kids says..... "what!, no homework!... you must fight the bear!" , and then the upright bear comes in the house, kinda like the land shark.
Also the Bear in this video kinda looks like the old Sasquatch vid where he's truckin' along beside some driftwood and you can tell its a suit
@djon82 This track was never officially released, so it probably did not get the high-quality production as other Steely Dan songs have. Try watching in 480p...that might help a little.
This song is not about addiction or the stock market. It's really very simple. It's about gay truck drivers. ("Bear" is a nickname for a big, hairy, teddy-bear-ish gay guy)
"The Bear" is probably my favorite Steely Dan song ever. I've loved Michael Douglas since he was on "Streets of San Francisco" when I was a kid, so this ain't half bad.

I didn't want to shell out the bucks to travel to NYC for the 'Rarities' setlist at the Beacon Theatre. But I think it'll be too good to miss.

So how many of these songs do they have that were unreleased? Why was it unreleased anyway?? I mean hot dang, their B side stuff is even solid.

@EmperorAckbar there are a few. This one is my favorite. You might also want to check out Kulee Baba and The Second Arrangement.

@EmperorAckbar I bet they make up a new song everytime some asks that question, just so they won't release it

They played this last night in Seattle.

"Don't Take Me Alive" chord structures in the chorus. Add the horns, and this is gonna be a monster crowd pleaser on this summer's SD tour.

This is another outstanding tune, NEARLY lost! Thanks so much for posting this!!!
Quite similar, on the outset, as Kind Spirit, huh?

Defenetly, cool "down in the bottom" stuff!

I've always thought this song is about addiction -- sounds like a Walter Becker idea, as from "Down in the Bottom":
In case you're wondering it's alive and well
That little habit that you left with me
Here in the suburbs where it's hard to tell
If I got the bear or if the bear got me
How did you know that it would take me down
Down to the bottom of the wine dark sea
Where you were waiting there to bring me 'round
Where you knew all the dopest cuts to be
