Wrong,NATO forces became VERY strong and professional after Vietnam,mostly in Reagan administration with new weapons like M1 Abrams,Bradley,Apache and F-15.

Russia was bankrupt at the end of the cold war, if Gorbatschow hadn't been so pro-west they sure had start a war for resources.

Just think about, the granaries were empty and the armorys were full to the bursting point, the armys of the warsaw pact were also trained for first strikes, it had been the most logical step.
