@womys I tried this: Fondle the hamster a bit in her original position(in your hand) until she calms down and stops being fidgety. Takes some patience and time, though. Then slowly and gently tilt her into the position with your fingers. Try not to use the other hand and do not pinch.

My two hamsters wouldn't do that. The first (Hero) is really sweet but don't like to lie on his back, the second (cherry) isn't that sweet(she wants to eat my finger) and is the most fit and fast hamster you've ever seen... she doesn't want to lay down, she wants to run every moment she's awake. It's so funny: first she runs (for maximum 4 seconds), than she stops and look around(for maximum 2 seconds) and than she go's running again... and again... and again, for 1 hour.
