My boy Oliver, a richly-colored tri, was a wonderful friend. Sometimes you could actually SEE that dog thinking, making plans which he would shortly carry out. (as, to steal a 2-lb wheel of brie and an entire fresh bundt cake off our kitchen countertop, which he did once, leaving only two crumbs in the space of time it took me to greet guests at our front door). I thought only humans could plan like that -- it was almost scary.

I had a Basset named Manny, he was my baby. He was only 9 or 10 when he got cancer in his front paws and we had to put him down. I was heartbroken. I still am. But watching this made me remember the last night he was with me, when he slept in my room and he snored the night away for the last time. He'll always be my baby boy. c:

@oscarmacaroni Hi, no he does not have any dramas with slobbering. But in saying that each dog to there own. They do smell quite a bit though, be ready for this as it will never go away no matter how often u clean them.

@rewind64155 My basset always has a strong hound smell to him, unless he's freshly bathed. It only takes until the next day for the hound smell to kick back in though, whether I'm using deoderizing shampoo, anti-bacterial, or mixing in baking soda as I wash him. I end up bathing him once a week because the scent gets on all the blankets and the furniture, and if I don't keep up on it, the house reeks of basset. But I love him, so I put up with it :p

@livinlifefree Well regardless of the smell., this is a very video. I watched it 2x. I love Bassets..even though I have been a Shih Tzu fan/owner since 1987. Had 4 ST and fostered 2. The Basset is another fave breed. They are just so silly looking. They always make me smile :)

@oscarmacaroni Mine doesn't slobber either, but he'll give very sweet kisses! They do smell though, starting about 2 days after a bath. I keep the doggie spray on shampoo on hand to keep the smell down.

@Kruzyn I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who got their basset a spiked colllar! My Buddha is a bit of a wimp with new people since he was abused as a pup, so I like to think the collar has given him some confidence as he's gotten much better about making new friends!

This is great. I had a basset that looked JUST like this one...Rufus. Amazing dog, lost him in 2004. We then got a bloodhound. Flop. He's 190 pounds and makes Rufus look obedient. Flop is like everything basset, on steroids. But bassets are perfect as they are.

I've got a Cocker/Staffordshire mix dog, who sleeps with my wife and me IN THE BED! Thank goodness "Risitas" doesn't snore, or she'd be snoozin' on the couch at nite! We keep her in the bed 'cause she shakes AND cries, whenever she can hear thunder - even if it's so far away that WE can't even hear it! Dogs are just big babies, but we love 'em for it, of course.

I agree with Juanita, if you are getting a bassett make sure you are well informed and ready for your new dog. They are great but do have there own personality.

@Kruzyn yes, best dogs ever, but can be strongheaded (moreso than other breeds).  also, be ready to be ambushed everywhere you go with people wanting to say hi and pet them. do your homework before getting a basset, then get ready for the best friend youll ever have.
