In the 1918 Irish general election 22 of the 29 seats in six Ulster counties were won by Ulster Unionists, 3 by Redmondites and 3 by Sinn Fein. This shows clear support for the Union in these six-counties.

In the rest of Ireland there was a massive mandate for Sinn Fein and thus independance.

The 1918 elections showed there were two Irelands each of which had excercised their right to self-determination.
