I actually like the wig.. but I don't love the performance. She seems like she's shouting in spots... it takes away from the lovely melody. That being said, she is a very talented singer and performer, and it's easy to criticize a video of someone when you chop just the aria apart, and put it on a little 3x5" screen, and through computer speakers! And it's easy to be picky when it's not YOU who's the one singing, from behind a computer!
her french is very good, she just colours her "a" and "è" because it is very difficult to sing. She sings it very beautifuly, very romantic, i love it !
Angela Gheorghiu and Mirella Freni both sang very strong, heavy toned Micaelas. Micaela is far from weak. She loves Don Jose and is ready to fight for him. Bizet's music for this aria is strong and expressive. She is passionate and prays to God desperately for courage! It's the biggest aria in the opera. A big lyric voice can do the role justice. This is a marvelous aria - and in fact it far outshines anything Carmen sings in the opera.
Here we are with the Micaela....It is well sung ...big and shaded and mostly in tune ....the odd slavic tones creep in ruining the french...as well as the lack of sweetness anywhere ...but It is well supported and very romantic singing. I think she did it very well.
@Tristiano i don`t know why you would say slavic tones???!! romanian is the most latin language of them all by far. Before you post rubbish read more about people. romanians are latinos and romania is a latin country !
I recently read that Ileana Cotrubas has coached Ms. Gheorghiu. I wonder why Angela likes to sing the sweet role of Michaela as is she were Aïda. She needs to listen to the recordings and performances of Ms. Cotrubas to learn how to sing this delicate, sweet and almost religious aria.

Yes, wig is too matronly for this character. Not a very pretty voice, and she's often sharp, with a forced sound, yet other times giving up the support on soft notes. In short, she's at best mediocre.
This is one of my favorite arias and this is the best version I've ever heard. In my opinion she owns this one. Not too heavy and not too light, just perfect! Thanks for posting this.

i love her singing, but i feel like she could do so much more with the character and let go of her diaphragm.
it's still a great performance, though! :-)

I love this soprano. Why do people hate on her so much? I love the darkness in her voice.
