i personaly think he was set up by the police because he was one of the first self titled artist and he was black with a dont care attitude and they didn' like that shit and the girl he was with knew that and the black oman tha shot him was just a patsy.
Very interesting man with a unique voice and delivery. Money and sex cost him his life, but it doesn't diminish his talent and impact on all of us. I wish he had lived for many more decades. He was very intelligent, a voracious reader. At least we have the recordings.
@TheCarKid97 Kindly amplify your theory of Sam's death. My guess is he picked up a prostitute, a "high end girl", and was set up for a robbery. His temper exploded, due to anger and the booze he had consumed that night, and the motel manager shot him as he railed at her. I haven't seen evidence in Peter Guralnik's book or on line to repudiate that idea. What do you know?
@PRR5406: Peter Guralnick's book is excellent, but goes off of reports that were filed in the mid-1960s. He says that nobody doubts the police reports (and he's proud of having the reports), but I think that's his error. Taking the police reports as fact is taking the motel owner's racially-biased story as fact, and that's not right. Her story is circumstantial evidence at best, and that 'evidence' is the victim her own racism, and as such I think we'll never know exactly what happened.
@TheCarKid97 Oh, I got some of what you said from the book. I wonder if the case was re-opened today, if any light could be shed on the murder. A physical autopsy of the skeletal remains would be a good start. If the bone dame is as bad as the family claimed and Guralnik alleges, we might get closer to truth. Sam's murder was closed pretty quickly, in my opinion, since her was black, hung with a drug using crowd, was intoxicated, and a symbol of black upward mobility.
@thecolaratlady no need to be like that..Cat stevens and Sam cooke are fucking excellent.. Cat couldnt sing? get your ears tested. . This is what Cat listened to as he grew up and his version was a tribute. He doesnt claim to be better than sam cooke,, And i`m sure that Sam cooke would appreciate another artist paying tribute,,,, why the hate????and what does religion have to do with this song?
@larabina34 I know!! Sam Cooke was the King of Cool before there was a king of anything in music. I guess someone is just jealous. Sam may be gone but his talent lives on.

He was easy on the ears. Not too loud, not too soft, clear as a bell and delivered a song with emotion ( well at least while he was singing it). Patsy Cline did the same thing, that's why she's a legend too.
@PRADAPAPE I don't think that's entirely accurate. While Sam grew up on Gospel music it was NOT his passion. He seems to have preferred to sing his own music by all accounts I've ever read and heard about him. 'Some' people who wanted him back in the fold didn't like him out there in the secular world so promulgated those stories, but frankly - he sounds very sincere on songs such as 'Bring it on Home to Me' and 'Change is Gonna Come'. They've lived on as stunning songs till this day.
This is my song now! I heard this and I was like "that is so me". In my opinion it isn't a sad song, it's like just sayin' y'all. Maybe I'm crazy. but that's what I think
"This song always takes me back to a night club in Amsterdam in the 60s where serving members of NATO Forces based in Germany used to meet to while away their weekends. There were British squaddies, GIs, Canadians, French and Dutch. We had fantastic time with the local ladies. Good old Sam Cooke and Solomon Burke were our favourite songs to dance to, those indeed were the happy days." I agree. NDUKA UZUAKPUNDU.

Man, the memories! I look back at the artists from this era, the way they felt their music, the moves, the voices, the out and out talent. They were simply judged on the quality of their music! Nowadays, Wow, such a fuss made of Gaga et al...why? Without the same media bandwaggon, without Simon Cowell, without twitter etc, would many of todays artists have hit such heights back in the day...hell no!!!
A #1 hit for Sam Cooke on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was his last #1 hit. It was also the 112th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. It also hit #10 on the Top 40 charts.

So funny story about this song... Funny but kinda sad.... I work as a cashier at a restaurant an last night (Saturday night) a man in his 30s came in alone and he started eating and this same came on and he started singing it and i felt really bad for him but i couldnt help laughing..

Brother Sam Cooke is the greatest soul legend of our times.
Sam was full of grace, love and he was the dynamic soul singer of all-time.
Brother Sam Cooke was brutally taken away from our souls, but and the biggest but of them all, he will be soul forever more.
Brother Sam Cooke is the greatest.

So funny story about this song... Funny but kinda sad.... I work as a cashier at a restaurant an last night (Saturday night) a man in his 30s came in alone and he started eating and this same came on and he started singing it and i felt really bad for him but i couldnt help laughing..
