You didn't play a Cmaj7 you play a C6 (you said C6 but C6 isn't the same as Cmaj7) and you didn't play a Dm7. Dm7 is d,f,a,c and you play f,a,c,e which is Fmaj7
@marcatoStrings When improvising, chord symbols aren't always treated literally. If I played DFAC every time I saw a Dm7, my playing would become quite lifeless. Dm7 is often modified to include a 9, ie FACE (I had the D in the LH) which makes it sound richer. Technically, that would make it a Dm9, however often the Dm7 symbol is still used so that you have the choice of playing it as Dm9 or Dm11 or Dm7b5, etc. Cmaj7 and C6 have similar qualities and can often be used interchangeably.
waw, like you say, it is the very top of the iceberg, but it's an enormous helpfull basis! i play the oboe, but also the piano on my own, just for fun. i wanted to start with jazz, but without lessons (and as an oboeist (or how do you call it in english) am i very classical) is it a huge step. and it seemed too hard to study on your own. but this was helpfull, it gives me the feeling and that's really important to start with. so thank you :)

@marcatoStrings He played what seemed to be the Fmaj7 chord in the right hand, but in the left hand he's playing the 2 D's. Which makes it a Dm9.
