@BigBaangThe XFCE is not as light weight as LXDE, and the colors are horrible. It's gray in gray, bit like Win98... But XFCE takes compiz lot better than LXDE.
@skibbli it could be worse, if you used mac you need their permission to even take a crap and then make sure you use a toilet that's compatible, but at least your crap will look nice and pretty.
@HybridMoments13 yes but if the toilet is not compatible you could buy some expensive drivers that have little features and only work on mac osx leopard not the other ones :) lol
@TheLitefire HELL WHY STOP THERE!? You can buy hundreds of thousands of cheap crappy accessories to make an obscenely over-priced look cheap and even more of a pain in the ass to use (pun not intended). You can add a new seat lid that will cancel out the power squat of death that prevents the toilet from flushing.

I would use openSUSE, but I have two computers, one is a macbook pro. I tried installing openSUSE with kde but the brightness wouldn't go up all the way, because driver support for macbooks on linux isn't too great. I also have a pc, but it's not to powerful so I have to use xfce. If i had to choose between KDE and GNOME, I'd probably pick KDE
Some distros work better on different systems. Like I have problems with Gnome Opensuse on my laptop, and no issues with Ubuntu. While on my last PC Linux Mint crashed a lot, and on this one I have no problems.
I recommend trying Kubuntu, or Linux Mint KDE, to see if you have the same problem. Linux isn't supposed to crash...
This video is not objective... The guy who made it is a gnome lover and a KDE hater.
Personaly I don't like both of them. Gnome has 2 taskbars which in my opinoin makes te screen look smal and very wide. KDE looks nice but is way to heavy.
I like: Blackbox, ICEWM, Fluxbox and any other SMALL Window Manger. But thats just because I only use a browser, a terminal and GVim when i am on linux box :P
@develt2012 Try them. after a while you'll notice linux is awesome. even tho there are awesome-styled things, i somehow prefer the look on system rescue CD (XFCE).... no idea why o.p
@muffemod Sorry..but that is incorrect. In this instance it IS pronounced with the G... Guh nohm...roughly. It isn't the same as the nature spirit/fairy tale character of the same spelling.
So what I got out of this is Gnome is better for performance and lower hardware because of simplicity and KDE is better for looks and higher hardware?
Gnome panel looks like a desk nailed to the screen and to get some comfort you need tools like gnome-do (crashes) and slab-menu which is horrible and ugly.Gnome is a tiny tad faster but i'd go with KDE (4.4+) every time.

@ItsAllLinux I never use Linux except to keep it as a recovery OS in case windows gets messed. The only reason I keep KDE is because it has a search bar and easy to use start menu. I wish Ubuntu has a search feature like finder in OSX. If there is, can anyone tell me how to access it cause im not that good with linux.
@rahmanroni check out GnomeDo. I'm not sure if it's included by default these days or not. probably not. go to applications / ubuntu software centre then search for gnomedo. to bring up the search feature, press ctrl + space. simple. p.s. i'm assuming you mean the search feature like searchlight and not finder.
I've given both KDE 4.X gnome a fair try and I found that while KDE has the looks GNOME has better peformance, simpler to use, more flexable, and there seams to be more support around the web for it. So... in short I found GNOME to be much better for everyday use, and more indepth use. (FYI I tried KUBuntu and Ubuntu 9.10)
tbh i dont think Gnome wins over kde 4.4 at anything, i started using linux with Gnome than i turn into OpenBox than LXDE and now im in KDE4.4 and i love it

hey, non-native speakers of english can't be expected to know every pronunciation exception, like gnome, dekstop, and taksbar. err.. at least the first one, anyway.

@ItsAllLinux well, not natively. It's annoying to me when I have to deal with a Qt/KDE app (e.g. Scribus) and it doesn't use the native widgits of my prefered Desktop Environment (GNOME). @GenoSkill I totally agree mac is too pricey but works amazing but windows computers are cheap but the os sucks, Linux works with a little time to learn it so it is the best option, but I'm still a mac because I bought one and I'm getting my money out of it.
I stopped to like KDE. KDE blocks my soundcard. I really cant use it, because KDE uses it. So I use Gnome2 on my Computer. I find it looks as good as and it works fine. Efficient, fast and stable..
IMHO KDE is better a lot of widgets a lot of apps fromm the makers of kde and real pertty the only real problem in KDE is that its waaay to slow so XFCE FOR NOW LOL
Dude.... Your not restricted to managing icons etc in the plasma box.... you can set the Desktop up the old standard way... like gnome.... Therefor you can have your icons n shit on your desktop and have everything work as Normal.... I forget where the setting is as I am in gnome right now.... but i think you right click on the desktop and go to desktop settings.... and you can change it to a standard desktop
boooooooo i like kde it very windows and you can change that box by going to activates then desktop icons

KDE > Gnome. KDE is much easier to customize and the desktop apps are awesome..

KDE: Windows
Seriously, they look similar.

@GenoSkill agreed on both parts

@GenoSkill I totally agree mac is too pricey but works amazing but windows computers are cheap but the os sucks, Linux works with a little time to learn it so it is the best option, but I'm still a mac because I bought one and I'm getting my money out of it.

@GenoSkill
It's be pretty awkward to smash your balls in a Window pane, but whatever.

I much prefer Gnome. It's clean, minimalist and almost mac-like. KDE feels over-engineered and over-complicated.

I stopped to like KDE. KDE blocks my soundcard. I really cant use it, because KDE uses it. So I use Gnome2 on my Computer. I find it looks as good as and it works fine. Efficient, fast and stable..

Dude.... Your not restricted to managing icons etc in the plasma box.... you can set the Desktop up the old standard way... like gnome.... Therefor you can have your icons n shit on your desktop and have everything work as Normal.... I forget where the setting is as I am in gnome right now.... but i think you right click on the desktop and go to desktop settings.... and you can change it to a standard desktop
kaddy01980 2 years ago
thanks for telling me.
As I'm an inexperienced KDE user, I'd rather have that set up for me on default. :P
But I'm glad they have that extra option you mentioned.
ItsAllLinux 2 years ago
you can change EVERYTHING if you want.. it's open source ;)
btw KDE 4.3 is much better as 4.2 much better perfomances now
BurNiNgBAssisT86 2 years ago
I know that, but you can't really move things like workspaces and start menu can you.
ItsAllLinux 2 years ago
You can.
You can really do anything with that menu you please. More customizable than gnome panels.
Anyway nice video. I subscribed to your video feed and looking forward for good Linux videos :)
