@Menegoth So you enjoy watching a comedy video and seeing a load of idiots arguing about nothing in the comments, achieving nothing and letting everyone know how stupid they are? You know I'm right.
@Menegoth You read the comments, found one you didn't like which had nothing to do with you, and complained about it. You're complaining about something which you're doing.
@bravobravo74 'which by definition make them better comedians' are you fucking high? Don't talk crap. Read what you write. @yellowcougar18 Sorry to have to do this, and I'm not having a go, but its Xenophobes with an x. Just so you know for the future. Don't be angry with me, maybe (when you’re having an impromptu and random spelling-bee) you might thank me in retrospect.
@andypalmtree Ah, it's grand. Seriously, if you think you were making an insulting comment, you really need to read more youtube comments, because you were not even close. For one thing, you never insulted me, my parents, accused me of being of a sexual orientation that some people dislike etc etc.
Honestly, your comment was one of he nicer insults I've ever gotten on youtube. Take care mate.
@bravobravo74 and this comment just sums it up. This 'moron' doesn't describe political correctness as being fair to people. He is mocking the people who say that it is, or that don't 'believe' in it. Stewart Lee is a superb comedian.....you don't find it funny because you don't get it.
@graemebdj "Political correctness was shit wasn't it, being fair to people". By saying this he's sarcastically criticising those that criticise political correctness. His point of view is that the people that don't like political correctness can't see it for what it is, which in his opinion is a culture of fairness. Therefore his joke is that some people are of the opinion that we should be deliberately unfair as a nation which is obviouly absurd. Perhaps it is you sir that doesn't get it.
@graemebdj a) because he is a pithy left-winger who considers the disease that is political correctness to be a good thing, and b) because 99% of what he says is complete garbage.
@bravobravo74 What is it then? Do enlighten us. Reference(dot)com puts 'politically correct' meaning "marked by or adhering to a typically progressive orthodoxy on issues involving especially race, gender, sexual affinity, or ecology." Which sounds a hell of a lot like being fair to people. Oh and nice job with the moron insult backed up by nothing whatsoever. You sound like a really fun person to hang around with!
@yosharian And frankly you sound like a complete tosser. Nice reference by the way, not a waste of time at all. It's of no relevance to you how fun or otherwise I am to 'hang around' with on the basis that I try to distance myself from wishy-washy council types like you as much as possible.
@bravobravo74 You're new to this whole 'discussion' thing aren't you? You're meant to discuss the topic at hand, not just throw out random insults. God knows where you get the idea that I'm a 'council type', haha. BTW if all you want to do is distance yourself from people like me, why did you bother commenting on this video? You really wish your opinion mattered here, but you're just a little kid trying to play with the grown-ups. Quite ironic, considering your apparent age.
@yosharian And you're just a grown-up trying to play with the little kids, right?. I don't want a discussion with you because you clearly don't have the capacity to write anything of any worth whatsoever, on any topic presumably not just this one. My insult to you wasn't random, it was reactionary to the diarrhoea that you'd written. My mental perception of you is that you're a middle-aged liberal loser with a limp handshake and a crap job. I apologise if I'm wrong but I suspect that I'm not.
@bravobravo74 You don't want a discussion with me because you're not capable of rational thought, merely knee-jerk reactions based upon bigotry and narrow-minded perceptions of the world. Keep going with the insults, you're only proving my point.
@yosharian This exchange is getting neither of us anywhere so I suggest that we stop. I invite you to have the last word however, so please write something, ANYTHING, that displays some sense and conviction. I don't care if it's personal against me, that I can tolerate. What I can't tolerate is the prospect of this country losing the battle against the left-wing no-balls brigade, thus leaving me and my right-in-the-head counterparts (a dwindling minority) essentially homeless.
@bravobravo74 It's ok, you'll be able to make little nests out of old Daily Mails and your own spittle, with all that frothing at the mouth you're doing :)
This is the worst stand-up 'comedy' that I've ever had the misfortune to witness. Stewart Lee isn't witty enough to be considered a comedian, nor does he possess the imagination required to elevate his material above the level of attacking television personalities and sections of the general public. There's a reason why the real comedians are wealthier, more popular and more acclaimed than he is and that is because they have more comedic talent. Which by definition make them better comedians.
@bravobravo74 You need to watch more Stewart Lee. What would you rather have, someone prancing round the stage, shouting and telling you what they had seen that day in the hope you had seen something similar?
@bravobravo74 Jim Davidson is more famous, is he a better comedian? Lee's act is targeted more finely to specific groups, if he were to become mainstream, his jokes would be irrelevant to those who expect the general "shock" alternative comedy of Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle, let alone fans of observationalist humour. He has a large underground following that would be more or less alienated if he had to make the subject matter / tone more generalised.
@bravobravo74 That's a lot of vitriol right there considering all you've really got to say is 'I didn't find it funny'. 1) whether he's witty or not is obviously a matter of opinion, you don't think he is, well there are plenty that do. 2) uh, isn't stand-up generally about *people*? as in, the public? celebrities? they are people right? and so I fail to see why SL should 'elevate' his material above it. 3) comedic talent is again a matter of opinion, I think he has plenty, you don't.
@FourJamLions No. Sorry for the lateness of my reply, I was busy uploading celebrity coach trip. Oh no wait, that's your shitty channel I'm thinking off lol
@FourJamLions All day? That's how long it takes you to write a comment on youtube? Wow. This took me 1 minute to write, I got better shit to do than beat on a retard but since it's only a small fraction of my day coupled with your tremendous ignorance, it's part of my free time I'm willing to sacrifice. btw Your mum says hi and can you pick her up a pregnacy test on your way home from the special school, I DID IT AGAIN!
cont: ...its the same thing that allowed us to accept the bankers bonus's without understanding where it was coming from, purely on the basis that, as they have it they must 'deserve' it, for services or ablities rendered. There is no individual loyalty displayed towards teams from most players. Thats not the way it works. Yet every man believes on some level he could be Beckham if he tried. But he isn't. I just think an amount of realism in context with the wider world wouldn't go amiss.
cont: I am alledging a cultural blind spot. This century its football, another it will be dropped (fad like) and it will be something else. That is the human desire for novelty. However I feel it a shame that the few who live in the sun hog all the light for the others. You to are working under the assumption ballet is elitist. Maybe it isn't. But thats a prevailing societal view and maybe not true. In fact I can't imagine anything more elitest than the image football players have now.
cont: .but I do alledge the system that displays them is a reflection of dangerous free market capitalist ideas which have plagued Britain and the world. I agree, their effect in comparison to banks is trivial, but the same system that allows people like Ashley Cole to act the way they do and still be lionised is the same attitude that took place in the financial world is essentially a result of the same system. Minor olympians living flagrant excess and still expecting deferance!
cont:...that are not mainstream but arguably involve more athletic ability that football. Take ballet for instance. It takes vast amounts of mental and physical ability, but is perceived as being elitist. Despite the fact tickets for that may be lower than football tickets now! Its all perception. Those with the higher physical ability do not necessarily reap the higher rewards. 400 years ago archery was a popular sport, now its just a few middle aged people in leisure centres. its all in fads!
cont to superduphaguy81: All I am saying is that there is little difference between the banker and the footballers in as much as they reap huge rewards from society entirely out of weight with what they contribute. You say no one wants to watch people spit tobacco into a pot but they do, they are just not in the majority. It is a shame in that football started off with quite down to earth traditions. Now there appears to be little loyalty to the fans, like any business giant, its all about money
I have long been making the argument for belligerant 'scum' footballers that Stewart Lee makes here to most of my friends, I will concede the 'bitter Lineker obese child arousal gambit' did pass me by. Even most football fans will admit that the people who play the game are making silly money and act like divas, but they just shrug their shoulders as if it doesn't matter. I found it was the same when people talked of bankers in the recession. We seem to have a high tolerance for parasites.
Maybe the reason why ppl shrug their shoulders at your argument is bcoz it's based on nothing more than blind hatred & resentment for ppl who were talented enough at a sport to be able to make large amounts of money from it...??
...& i personally cant see the connection between a footballer who (legitimately) makes "silly money" & "acts like a diva" & a lender who sells ppl bad mortgages on purpose leaving them in debt for yeas...
@supahdupahguy81 Err...I think blind hatred and resentment is stepping over the mark there. Funnily enough I don't lie in bed cursing the ceiling about how much Ronaldo makes, or any of the other footballers whom you may choose to live vicariously through. I ignore them. They are obviously quite happy for fans to be ripped in off in order to pay for the privilage of wearing their names in the street. The connection between the two is that they are parasites on society. Nothing more.
"The connection between the two is that they are parasites on society."
--
Yup, A professional footballer who earns his living through his athletic ability, & a corporate banker who earns his living by deliberately lending poor ppl money so they can cripple them with debt they have to pay for the rest of their life....
Two peas in a pod.......& not a bit resentful & hate-filled..
@supahdupahguy81 Yeah...ok..so lets take your argument to the next logical extreme and argue that surely the banker also deserves his money because of his superior numerical ability, his access to money and the people that supply it. Lets not look into the ethics of the thing at all and focus on the intangible you call 'ability'. There are people in the world who make a fine art of spitting tobacco over vast yards into a pot. You couldn't do it, so why arn't they paid for their ability the same?
"intangible"????.....athletic ability & aptitude is possibly the most un-intangible thing going. It should be pretty clear for all to see if someone is athletically good at something......this is why they dont let 55 yr old, overweight ppl in the army......Just b'coz you don't get it doesn't make it "intangible".....come on now.
/
The difference is noone wants to watch ppl spitting tobacco into a pot.....is there any other ridiculous analogies you wish to make?
And as for bankers equally "deserving their money coz they're good at numbers"....as you have pointed out, the elephant in the room is the ethics behind such an action....you can't be calling ppl "parasites" on one hand then discounting the ethical difference between them the next....obviously to call someone a "parasite" you must have based that on ethics...
Why is it irrelevant all of a sudden when someone questions how you arrived at such a comparison?
@supahdupahguy81 You don't seem to be getting the argument here tonto. I only raised the issue of 'deserving bankers to show up the inconsistancies inherant in your own point of view. You opine that footballers deserve the huge amounts of money the system gives them because of athletic ability. By the same token you accept that, as bankers are rewarded by bonus's, they must also have superior 'abilities' that entitle them to this. Regardless of ethics. That seems to be your point.
Firstly, "the system" doesn't give them money....people who want to watch football do.
And no i dont think it does "show up my inconsistancies" TBH....in any case, what exactly IS so special about knowing how to exploit financial loopholes & rip ppl off?...You don't need a PHD in maths, anyone could learn how to do that if they wanted...So no i dont accept that logic, as athletic ability is generally held in much higher regard than the ability to cheat ppl out of money.
"All I am saying is that there is little difference between the banker and the footballers in as much as they reap huge rewards from society"
--
Well I personally think there is every difference in the world between an athlete who earns his/her money bcoz ppl willingly pay to watch them & someone who earns it through deceit & trickery & then gets the taxpayer to bail them out when they fuck up.
& incidentally footballers actually do a lot for various charities in their spare time
@supahdupahguy81 One person's deceit and trickery is anothers 'ability' (e.g Maradonas famus 'hand of God' argument). I am saying that, whatever ability they may possess, no one deserves that much money. Even if they do give 1.5% of it to charity. When I talk about ability as 'intangible' i mean it in terms of societies viewpoint of what is worthwhile and what isn't, what is perceived as a desirable 'ability'. At the moment society lauds footballers but there are professions (cont)
I am saying that, whatever ability they may possess, no one deserves that much money. "
--
Well obviously you're entitled to your opinion, & i'm sure you're not alone in thinking this, but the way i see it, football is a free market, the amount of money involved in it is a reflection of the games worldwide popularity. Ballet isn't very popular, & while they do possess impressive athletic ability (wouldn't necessarily say it's greater than footballers)....(cont)
it isn't very accessible to normal people (as you said it's elitist plus it's doesn't reallly have a pick-up-&-play factor), & TBH if you're a young man & you have the choice of numerous sporting pursuits such as football, rugby, cricket, track & field etc, doing ambidextrous dancing in front of posh ppl whilst wearing a leotard wont be a very attractive proposition!
The best thing about football is it's low entry-level criteria & the simplicity of the game, it can be understood (cont)
immediately by anyone who claps eyes on a ball & a field....it's popularity among society i believe is largely down to our practical familiarity with the sport.....most of the ppl who become fans will have at some point played or still play football themselves & even ppl who don't can still understand the game fairly easily.
BTW there are records of football-esque games being played in the UK as far back as the 13th century...the fad hasn't worn out yet..
@supahdupahguy81 I am aware the football possess's some pedigree (the same as track and field, ballet, in fact narly every athletic feat you can name was praticised in some form by the ancient greeks). James The First even banned football because it was distracting men from their archery practice (sensible man! Wonder if he used some oracle to see into the future, saw Wayne Rooney and decided then and there to stamp out the menace!) To be honest my argument isn't against footballers per se....
Ok i see where you're coming from. Interesting point...however i do feel you're being a bit unfair in projecting the wrongs of capitalist society onto football.
Personally, i see most sports in general & football in particular as more of a socialist construct if anything....it simply cannot survive without us wanting to participate in it - i struggle to think of another trade where ppl can come from virtually absolute poverty & make millions almost solely on ability....
....but obviously being a competitive sport, the best inevitably rise to the top.
We all want to see the best in their chosen field especially in sport...the attention the top-end of the game will get is gonna be unavoidable.
And while i DO understand it may irk to see ppl like Ashley Cole glorified (he isn't really TBH, but he's probably the best left back in the world at the moment so he's respected for his talent).....(cont)
......, i don't think it's a bad thing that good footballers get well paid & highlighted for being good,....I mean the bankers that made a fortune in commission ripping everybody off could be exemplary fathers & wonderful husbands, does that make what they did any less deplorable?
If someone's going to earn alot of money, i'd rather it a footballer as they're not hurting anyone.....maybe if we had practiced more it could have been us....at least that opportunity is there in football.
@supahdupahguy81 As you say 'maybe if we had practiced more it could have been us' ...it is that aspirational fantasy that actually does some harm in the modern culture. In fact there is a theory that we allow so much wealth to be distrubuted amongst such a small elite because on some level we believe 'that could have been us'. At least with football, I will concede, some of those made stars have got varied stories to tell. But the culture that supports this is fundamentally wrong...
@MCBathtub yea britian's falling to shit... muslims aint visibly european and we don't know where your MP's from, and most people would rather blame our problems on white bankers or politians or some shit, when in reality it's the fault of all those foreign types coming over here, with there elusive nationality, running for MP, being unrecognisable as a european, while giving us a cultural affront straight up the arse. bastards.. pretty fukin ironic too
@MCBathtub You having an MP from a country you've never heard of, says more about your geographical ignorance than anything else.
'Cultural affront'? Does that go for ex-pat Brits who form their own communities abroad? If you're honest, would you genuinely see that as a cultural affront?..I think not.
We first imported these communities in droves when it suited our economic needs, it's a pity such animosity has been built up, in such a way that hasnt been the case in the U.S.
@MCBathtub This is Britian pal. Our country is not full of God fearing, gun loving and gay hating morons like yours. No prizes for guessing what country you are from.
@MCBathtub lol spinelss liberal faggot?? because his sense of sexuality isnt as fragile or broken as yours for him to run around and demand it be reaffirmed in the most pathetic and desperate form..imitation?
France gets BHL, England has Stewart Lee. If you need a superstar philosopher, let him at least be funny. Lee is probably a bit better looking to boot.
France gets BHL, England has Stewart Lee. If you need a superstar philosopher, let him at least be funny. Lee is probably a bit better looking to boot.
Spoken like a good schoolboy, ViolentRunning — nice to see your "education" installed in you the correct thoughts and opinions, including the amusing sense of elevated self-importance sported by the ignorant. Just the kind of personality Stewart Lee attracts, you see? Oh, by the way — he isn't funny, but feel free to attribute my viewpoint to my ingrained ignorance, if it makes you feel better, sweetie!
@RogerHoare Well, I guess... but knowingly so. If I was half as; educated, esoteric, intelligent, insightful and talented as Stew, then I think I would be smug too. He's actually not you know, you do realise he has an on stage persona? I met him last week in London and he was extremely friendly and humble... and not smug at all.
@balthazaa2001 Yeah, this point isn't raised enough. I guess a lot of people think his stage persona is essentially him, because it's so low key, and realistic. For example I think most people would realise that Michael McIntyre doesn't actually go around all day being constantly amused and exasperated at the mundane trivialities of life. He would be classed as mentally ill if he did. Yes, in the end, every comedy performance is exactly that - a PERFORMANCE. Not a presentation of truth.
If people indulge in slurs or derision against a group it's "bigotry" or "prejudice". If Stewart Lee indulges in it (e.g. the Scots/Christians etc) he's doing it for "comic effect". No doubt his "Jerry Springer - The Musical" is stuffed full off such "comic effect" and nothing as sordid and common as "prejudice". Lee is so infallible, he should be the next Pope.
@RogerHoare It physically pains me to try and comprehend how someone can miss the point quite so much. Congratulations, i guess, didn't know you could get your sense of humour surgically removed. Learn something new every day.
@RogerHoare That's the thing.... if the people who practice hate against certain groups said they were being ironic or funny, then it wouldn't be so badly received. It's the ones who actually mean it who are bigots. Possibly intelligent humour is inherently flawed in that many don't get it; that's really education's fault. For example, if you watched his musical then you could judge it properly; it's all about knowledge.
@RogerHoare i dont care how smug it is. its funny . it makes me laugh. and im just saything this for no reason cause i did laugh at the high quality version thing. i still think hes funny
Stewart Lee is a genius. The sheer number of times he, a white man, was able to say the word "nigger" and still be alive is amazing. My hat goes off to you sir.
He is obviously intelligent but he seems to always talk about racism a lot and also he doesn't like prejudice, however it's okay to generalise that nortern people wont understand his supreme interlectuall stand up.
Christ, Brigstock is a massive cunt fair play. Crime is only prevalent in a society where there is much of a juxtaposition of poor and wealthy. It has fuck all to do with race you bigoted arse. The 'head of the London police' did not ever state that, a BNP councillor did. Hell, you're even lucky I managed to decipher what you even inferred in your post you absolute cretin. You should've been discarded at birth.

Well done eitherway.

Which by definition make them better comedians.
bravobravo74 6 months ago
@bravobravo74 You need to watch more Stewart Lee. What would you rather have, someone prancing round the stage, shouting and telling you what they had seen that day in the hope you had seen something similar?
graemebdj 6 months ago
@bravobravo74 Jim Davidson is more famous, is he a better comedian? Lee's act is targeted more finely to specific groups, if he were to become mainstream, his jokes would be irrelevant to those who expect the general "shock" alternative comedy of Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle, let alone fans of observationalist humour. He has a large underground following that would be more or less alienated if he had to make the subject matter / tone more generalised.
mmscott9 6 months ago
@mmscott9 I can see what you're saying but we'll have to agree to disagree about his merits.
bravobravo74 6 months ago
@bravobravo74 That's a lot of vitriol right there considering all you've really got to say is 'I didn't find it funny'. 1) whether he's witty or not is obviously a matter of opinion, you don't think he is, well there are plenty that do. 2) uh, isn't stand-up generally about *people*? as in, the public? celebrities? they are people right? and so I fail to see why SL should 'elevate' his material above it. 3) comedic talent is again a matter of opinion, I think he has plenty, you don't.

cont: ...its the same thing that allowed us to accept the bankers bonus's without understanding where it was coming from, purely on the basis that, as they have it they must 'deserve' it, for services or ablities rendered. There is no individual loyalty displayed towards teams from most players. Thats not the way it works. Yet every man believes on some level he could be Beckham if he tried. But he isn't. I just think an amount of realism in context with the wider world wouldn't go amiss.
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
cont: I am alledging a cultural blind spot.
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
cont: .but I do alledge the system that displays them is a reflection of dangerous free market capitalist ideas which have plagued Britain and the world. I agree, their effect in comparison to banks is trivial, but the same system that allows people like Ashley Cole to act the way they do and still be lionised is the same attitude that took place in the financial world is essentially a result of the same system. Minor olympians living flagrant excess and still expecting deferance!
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
cont:...that are not mainstream but arguably involve more athletic ability that football.
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
cont to superduphaguy81: All I am saying is that there is little difference between the banker and the footballers in as much as they reap huge rewards from society entirely out of weight with what they contribute. You say no one wants to watch people spit tobacco into a pot but they do, they are just not in the majority. It is a shame in that football started off with quite down to earth traditions. Now there appears to be little loyalty to the fans, like any business giant, its all about money
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
I have long been making the argument for belligerant 'scum' footballers that Stewart Lee makes here to most of my friends, I will concede the 'bitter Lineker obese child arousal gambit' did pass me by. Even most football fans will admit that the people who play the game are making silly money and act like divas, but they just shrug their shoulders as if it doesn't matter. I found it was the same when people talked of bankers in the recession. We seem to have a high tolerance for parasites.
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
@BelatedCommiseration
Bit of a spurious connection to make.
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
@supahdupahguy81 Err...I think blind hatred and resentment is stepping over the mark there. Funnily enough I don't lie in bed cursing the ceiling about how much Ronaldo makes, or any of the other footballers whom you may choose to live vicariously through. I ignore them. They are obviously quite happy for fans to be ripped in off in order to pay for the privilage of wearing their names in the street. The connection between the two is that they are parasites on society. Nothing more.
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
@BelatedCommiseration
:/
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
@supahdupahguy81 Yeah...ok..so lets take your argument to the next logical extreme and argue that surely the banker also deserves his money because of his superior numerical ability, his access to money and the people that supply it. Lets not look into the ethics of the thing at all and focus on the intangible you call 'ability'. There are people in the world who make a fine art of spitting tobacco over vast yards into a pot. You couldn't do it, so why arn't they paid for their ability the same?
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
@BelatedCommiseration
/
The difference is noone wants to watch ppl spitting tobacco into a pot.....is there any other ridiculous analogies you wish to make?
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
(cont0
And as for bankers equally "deserving their money coz they're good at numbers"....as you have pointed out, the elephant in the room is the ethics behind such an action....you can't be calling ppl "parasites" on one hand then discounting the ethical difference between them the next....obviously to call someone a "parasite" you must have based that on ethics...
Why is it irrelevant all of a sudden when someone questions how you arrived at such a comparison?
Make up your mind.
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
@supahdupahguy81 You don't seem to be getting the argument here tonto. I only raised the issue of 'deserving bankers to show up the inconsistancies inherant in your own point of view. You opine that footballers deserve the huge amounts of money the system gives them because of athletic ability. By the same token you accept that, as bankers are rewarded by bonus's, they must also have superior 'abilities' that entitle them to this. Regardless of ethics. That seems to be your point.
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
@BelatedCommiseration
Firstly, "the system" doesn't give them money....people who want to watch football do.
And no i dont think it does "show up my inconsistancies" TBH....in any case, what exactly IS so special about knowing how to exploit financial loopholes & rip ppl off?...You don't need a PHD in maths, anyone could learn how to do that if they wanted...So no i dont accept that logic, as athletic ability is generally held in much higher regard than the ability to cheat ppl out of money.
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
(cont)
"All I am saying is that there is little difference between the banker and the footballers in as much as they reap huge rewards from society"
--
Well I personally think there is every difference in the world between an athlete who earns his/her money bcoz ppl willingly pay to watch them & someone who earns it through deceit & trickery & then gets the taxpayer to bail them out when they fuck up.
& incidentally footballers actually do a lot for various charities in their spare time
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
@supahdupahguy81 One person's deceit and trickery is anothers 'ability' (e.g Maradonas famus 'hand of God' argument). I am saying that, whatever ability they may possess, no one deserves that much money. Even if they do give 1.5% of it to charity. When I talk about ability as 'intangible' i mean it in terms of societies viewpoint of what is worthwhile and what isn't, what is perceived as a desirable 'ability'. At the moment society lauds footballers but there are professions (cont)
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
@BelatedCommiseration
Ballet isn't very popular, & while they do possess impressive athletic ability (wouldn't necessarily say it's greater than footballers)....(cont)
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
(cont)
it isn't very accessible to normal people (as you said it's elitist plus it's doesn't reallly have a pick-up-&-play factor), & TBH if you're a young man & you have the choice of numerous sporting pursuits such as football, rugby, cricket, track & field etc, doing ambidextrous dancing in front of posh ppl whilst wearing a leotard wont be a very attractive proposition!
The best thing about football is it's low entry-level criteria & the simplicity of the game, it can be understood (cont)
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
(cont)
immediately by anyone who claps eyes on a ball & a field....it's popularity among society i believe is largely down to our practical familiarity with the sport.....most of the ppl who become fans will have at some point played or still play football themselves & even ppl who don't can still understand the game fairly easily.
BTW there are records of football-esque games being played in the UK as far back as the 13th century...the fad hasn't worn out yet..
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
@supahdupahguy81 I am aware the football possess's some pedigree (the same as track and field, ballet, in fact narly every athletic feat you can name was praticised in some form by the ancient greeks). James The First even banned football because it was distracting men from their archery practice (sensible man! Wonder if he used some oracle to see into the future, saw Wayne Rooney and decided then and there to stamp out the menace!) To be honest my argument isn't against footballers per se....
BelatedCommiseration 8 months ago
Ok i see where you're coming from. Interesting point...however i do feel you're being a bit unfair in projecting the wrongs of capitalist society onto football.
Personally, i see most sports in general & football in particular as more of a socialist construct if anything....it simply cannot survive without us wanting to participate in it - i struggle to think of another trade where ppl can come from virtually absolute poverty & make millions almost solely on ability....
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
(cont)
....but obviously being a competitive sport, the best inevitably rise to the top.
We all want to see the best in their chosen field especially in sport...the attention the top-end of the game will get is gonna be unavoidable.
And while i DO understand it may irk to see ppl like Ashley Cole glorified (he isn't really TBH, but he's probably the best left back in the world at the moment so he's respected for his talent).....(cont)
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
(cont)
......, i don't think it's a bad thing that good footballers get well paid & highlighted for being good,....I mean the bankers that made a fortune in commission ripping everybody off could be exemplary fathers & wonderful husbands, does that make what they did any less deplorable?
If someone's going to earn alot of money, i'd rather it a footballer as they're not hurting anyone.....maybe if we had practiced more it could have been us....at least that opportunity is there in football.
supahdupahguy81 8 months ago
@supahdupahguy81 As you say 'maybe if we had practiced more it could have been us' ...it is that aspirational fantasy that actually does some harm in the modern culture. In fact there is a theory that we allow so much wealth to be distrubuted amongst such a small elite because on some level we believe 'that could have been us'. At least with football, I will concede, some of those made stars have got varied stories to tell. But the culture that supports this is fundamentally wrong...

'Cultural affront'? Does that go for ex-pat Brits who form their own communities abroad? If you're honest, would you genuinely see that as a cultural affront?..I think not.
We first imported these communities in droves when it suited our economic needs, it's a pity such animosity has been built up, in such a way that hasnt been the case in the U.S.

balthazaa2001 1 year ago 2

1978deus 1 year ago
@RogerHoare That's the thing.... if the people who practice hate against certain groups said they were being ironic or funny, then it wouldn't be so badly received. It's the ones who actually mean it who are bigots. Possibly intelligent humour is inherently flawed in that many don't get it; that's really education's fault. For example, if you watched his musical then you could judge it properly; it's all about knowledge.
