Andy wasn't a comedian, so stop calling him that. He never told a joke in his whole life, and he never tried to be funny. He wanted the audience to venture into different real emotions, to laugh from the gut, be sad from the gut-or get angry from the gut.
There is no way to describe his performance. He just did what he did and that's that.
Such a genius. Full of originality and the desire to only entertain himself. He was a gift to us and it is so sad that he was taken from us at such an early age. Rest in Peace sweet Andy.
It may not be funny to everyone, but that's interesting, to be able and willing to do something like that on stage, and it was kind of new at that time I think. It's interesting, strange and unclear, as are the reasons for liking what he does. What I mean is that your idea sounds too serious... and also a bit disrespectful. Anyway, I'm not really a fan but I tought I'd tell you my idea.
if you think Andy wasnt/isnt funny: go to YT and watch "My breakfast with Blassie" a HILARIOUS movie that basically is curb your enthusiasm 30years ahead of its time.
Andy forced his audience to think about the Comedy, and He didn't feed them low brow comedy one liners, and dumbed down pap. Sometimes his pieces bordered on Performance Art, not necessarily always rapid fire, or situational comedy bits. I think the old adage though always applies... If you have to explain the joke, the Comedian hasn't done their job, and it isn't funny. There is never a dumb house crowd, you can't blame it on the Audience. A Comedian has to be fluid and adjust to his Audience.
@1990osu You just failed the Kaufman test, and comedy test in general: if you have to explain it, it's not funny. You can't really explain what's funny about it. It just sort of is.
Improvisation means without a script. He isn't doing a monologue. He did shows like the has-been corner. He wanted to produce a show with his neighbor out watering his lawn playing as the host.
Go watch any sitcom that has a laugh track. Every ten seconds, without fail, there is a roar of overly-enthusiastic laughter, even though it's probably not very funny at all.
@Edwardocatflappo I didn't need anyone to explain to me, and I laughed my ass off. So what'll it be? You going to try and tell me your opinion matters more than mine? Or can we agree that they're just that: opinions?
@FreddyTheJumpingCat I think Kauffmans genius is similar to Stephen Hawkings genius. Nobody has no idea what the f.... they are on about, so it must be genius.
@FreddyTheJumpingCat Irony to a painfully comical level. Anyway, fuck being so cynical. Smile and look on the bright side that some people enjoy it and go watch what you enjoy. Cheers and have a good day mate.
Andy Kaufman is an entertainer. I don't think of him as a comedian. I think of him as someone that I never know what to expect, usually something over the top and then it's something completely minimalist. Him reading the Great Gatsby for instance, is it funny in it's own right? No. The fact that he takes it so seriously is what makes it funny and how no one wants him to do it. I don't know, I won't say "if you don't get it then you're an idiot" but....it's definitely not for everyone.
@ericlebr Like most non-traditional entertainment. He's just being himself and doing what he thought was funny, not adhering to what is universally accepted SO with this logic, whether he's funny or not to you, he is doing exactly what he wanted in every way. A true individual.
Brilliant! Yes the taped laughter is kind of the point. If you didn't get that, then give up now. Yes the audience's nervous reaction is also the point, and yes we're zooming through post-modernism and out the other side so try to keep up. Is it funny? Well...no not really. But then nor is the Musical Box, Seven Chances, the Parrot Sketch, or the Life of Brian. People laugh at Annie Hall or Taxi Driver but not at the Mona Lisa or Andrei Rublev. Why? Who knows... doesn't really matter.
the crowd is laughing because they went to a comedy club and had no expectation of watching someone eat ice cream..it's awkward.so they laugh it off..people keep jumping onto the bandwagon until they start calling this "style" of
humor "genius"
this guy is everything short of genius.
this act shows nothing of creativity, his view or "voice" of the world we all experience.
"Andy Kaufman wasn't funny... blah blah blah... he was a jerk... blah... I'm an idiot and don't understand anything that isn't shoved down my throat... blah blah... if the mainstream TV didn't say it's funny then I hate it... BLAH!!"
I get tired of these comments on Andy's videos. Don't watch him if you don't like him!
Don't try to see something that's not fcking there. This isn't funny and Andy Kaufman was just a fluke and a fad. Most people are sheeps and that is the only reason he got to where he was. Since dumb fcking lemmings heard someone say he was funny and make up sh*t saying the joke is this and that "O~~~ now I get it!!! HE'S A GENIUS!!!" Seriously people have the balls to speak ur mind and see him for what he really is. A comedian that was just not funny.
@permexOQ its a joke on many levels, get them to watch him eat order food onstage and eat and ge got them to be entertained by the absurdity of it all. plus he get to use an improve sketch that got him thrown out of the same place just to show how good he really was
In the movie 'man in the moon' Kaufman asked the question what is "funny". The answer given was "silence". Truth be told, if ice cream eating Kaufman was a Christian you all would have broken from the spell and walked out of the room. Kaufman and his Jewishness took you for a drive around the sympathetic ww2 poland block. I lost you somewhere...So you're saying that people were leaving the comfort of their home to watch Kaufman, a Jew, perform in some shit nightclub at a time when the television sitting in the comfort of their lliving room featured a wide selection of Jews, AND Carroll O'Connor?
I think that you may have forgotten to consider the variable that being the inherantly lazy cunts that we are we're not gonna pay some club double for what we already have when forming this theory.
I heard he used to do really bizzare performaces like doing his laundry or lying motionless in a sleeping bag for twenty some minutes.
This could be about the time when he was on Taxi and just despised all the attention he was getting from it. Since he never truly considered himself as a comedian he just messed around with alot of these appearences.
He was either way ahead of his time or just being a prick to those who came to see him.
The joke is the tension. The situation breeds this sense there will be something out of the ordinary so the audience looks for it, but it doesn't happen. He adds a laugh track to simulate the idea of creating a performance out of the mundane. Its a classic shaggy dog story.

THis is complete crap! if a guy tried this at a comedy club in my city he gets booed off the stage and beat up backstage! everyone watch martin lawrence's first amendment comedy show on the starz network. that is real comedy not like this unfunny garabge
I wish I had people applauding me when I eat ice cream. Instead they angrily tell me that I'm fat, and an apple would be better for me. I smile and laugh when they say this, but later on, I cry. I cry a lot.
Guys, listen to the audience. They were there..They effing loved it. No one is committed enough to looking cool and hip to dig out a belly laugh, or atleast I'm not.
what can i say? he´s just a genius. amazing what he did, when you think that today, comedians try to be smart and try hard to wrote some smart material to say and all that crap. Andy is some kind of distant future, in the past. GENIUS, that´s it.
@edspacely92 It's just one of those things. Either you find it hilarious or you don't. I promise there is humor in it however you have to have that kind of sense of humor to "get it". Think of it like Monty Python. Some people love it but other people despise it and don't see what all the fuss is about.
@edspacely92 perhaps you would be better attuned to watching a comedian who swears alot and maybe burps or farts a few times... I imagine you4 brain could wrap itself around that a bit more efficiently.
I don't think he was being arrogant. His mainstream career was always dangling by a thread, and he must have known that at any time it could drop. All he needed to do, to secure it, was 'play to the rules' of comedy, but he still refused to - so he must not have cared about the money or the fame.
The whole thing feels like like a parody of a comedy sketch in the same way a mock mock trial would be a parody of a mock trial or to use another anology, a satire on a clown .
It was not just about making the audience uncomfortable. It was also about recognising comedic situations in the mundane. But beyond that, it was about pushing the limits of what is standardly thought to be 'comedic' by society.
A reflective person with time on their hands can be entertained by a whole smorgasbord of unintentionally comedic things that human beings do. What Kaufman did was to try to share this sensibility with his audience members.
Oh my gosh. I stir around my ice cream and I tend to get chocolate. I have so many things similar with my random idols. It`s amazing knowing so much, yet really so little.
yeah that's if it was hilarious and it wasn't... the jokes is on the people laughing at somthing not funny and it's Kaufman laughing at the audience. Wow
Not only have you apparently missed the point of this sketch, you have missed the point of comedy.
Anyone can make a joke bad, comedians/humorist/whatever (The only word I know is comedian.. Andy Kaufman's definition of humour is more complex than most people. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?) are just good at telling bad jokes.
well REPKU I decided to stick your reply back up. Please enlighten REPKU what is the point of this and comedy. In my opinion this piece is self indulgent rubbish. It encourages elitist claptrap? Was it hilarious? Errr IMHO this sucked! Nothing more than performance art.
@bombertheelephant Every time I say "Kaufman sucked" people come out of the woodwork defending him. People were stoned out of their minds to enjoy him...
These are the same people that would pay millions for a Shark in formaldehyde or a putty tin with human excrement in it. They are out there unfortunately a lot of people do not have the courage to voice their opinion because they are outnumbered by airheads. If I think this is shit and Kaufman suck then he sucks... it's an opinion. Only time I got a laugh out of him was when he Latka. LMFAO
you're cut from the same cloth as me.... I checked out your web site.... pretty cool I really don't know how to negotiate the computer buttt. Hey if you want to rile someone go to "Andy Kaufman Midnite Special" the one posted by boyargee or something. He gets EXTREMELY upset if you critique his idol.. Just look how he responded to me!!! Keep the faith, brother!
@bombertheelephant It's because Kaufman likes making the audience feel "uncomfortable", and when people get uncomfortable, naturally they would laugh because it does not register in their usual mind set of a comedy act.
Andy wasn't a comedian, so stop calling him that. He never told a joke in his whole life, and he never tried to be funny. He wanted the audience to venture into different real emotions, to laugh from the gut, be sad from the gut-or get angry from the gut.

I wish I had people applauding me when I eat ice cream. Instead they angrily tell me that I'm fat, and an apple would be better for me. I smile and laugh when they say this, but later on, I cry. I cry a lot.
fraidy2008 1 year ago 3

Loctorpse 1 year ago
@edspacely92 perhaps you would be better attuned to watching a comedian who swears alot and maybe burps or farts a few times... I imagine you4 brain could wrap itself around that a bit more efficiently.

Arrogant bastard. He's like "only I could get paid to do this shit. Haha".
SUpersaiyajinjerkbag 1 year ago
I don't think he was being arrogant. His mainstream career was always dangling by a thread, and he must have known that at any time it could drop. All he needed to do, to secure it, was 'play to the rules' of comedy, but he still refused to - so he must not have cared about the money or the fame.

He ate that mother father like a BOSS.

What Kaufman did was to try to share this sensibility with his audience members.
gigantes1966 1 year ago
I don't see what the big hype is about Kaufman. Maybe I had to be around then to understand it.

Hola yankees.

Adios.
eltotote79 1 year ago
Kaufman lo hizo el 11 de Octubre de 1975, 2años antes que Leblanc. No digo que Tony le haya plagiado pero si que Andy fue primero.
brainmermelade 1 year ago
Vale, gracias por la información.
De todas formas, lo de Tony Leblanc es cojonudo y no creo que lo hubiera copiado, pero nunca se sabe...
Saludos.

It is amazing how Andy could take a simple thing like eating a dish of ice cream & actually make it funny.
defleppardgirl1974 1 year ago
only 1 comedian in 3000 million could get away with an act like that and make it hilarious, but thats what andy was, 1 in a million
logom0 1 year ago
yeah that's if it was hilarious and it wasn't... the jokes is on the people laughing at somthing not funny and it's Kaufman laughing at the audience. Wow

Not only have you apparently missed the point of this sketch, you have missed the point of comedy.
Anyone can make a joke bad, comedians/humorist/whatever (The only word I know is comedian.. Andy Kaufman's definition of humour is more complex than most people. WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?) are just good at telling bad jokes.
bombertheelephant 1 year ago
well REPKU I decided to stick your reply back up. Please enlighten REPKU what is the point of this and comedy. In my opinion this piece is self indulgent rubbish. It encourages elitist claptrap? Was it hilarious? Errr IMHO this sucked! Nothing more than performance art.
bombertheelephant 1 year ago
@bombertheelephant Every time I say "Kaufman sucked" people come out of the woodwork defending him. People were stoned out of their minds to enjoy him...
dumbbina 1 year ago
These are the same people that would pay millions for a Shark in formaldehyde or a putty tin with human excrement in it. They are out there unfortunately a lot of people do not have the courage to voice their opinion because they are outnumbered by airheads. If I think this is shit and Kaufman suck then he sucks... it's an opinion. Only time I got a laugh out of him was when he Latka. LMFAO
bombertheelephant 1 year ago
you're cut from the same cloth as me.... Keep the faith, brother!
dumbbina 1 year ago
@bombertheelephant It's because Kaufman likes making the audience feel "uncomfortable", and when people get uncomfortable, naturally they would laugh because it does not register in their usual mind set of a comedy act.
killer1177 1 year ago
I agree. But don't call Andy a comedian. He was a song & dance man. But he was really good at making people laugh. Andy Kaufman was brilliant.
