  • Andy wasn't a comedian, so stop calling him that. He never told a joke in his whole life, and he never tried to be funny. He wanted the audience to venture into different real emotions, to laugh from the gut, be sad from the gut-or get angry from the gut.

There is no way to describe his performance. He just did what he did and that's that.

  • 4chan can learn a thing or two from this guy.

  • he's like a reflection of the audience.

    hysterical.

    brilliant.

    earnest.

    thank you andy.

  • Not only did he not pay his bill, but he didn't even tip her. ;D

  • Haha, look at those idiots! Watching a man eating ice cream!

    [6 minutes later]

    O_O

  • I love the bit of silence after the tape applause ends

  • People who liked Hee Haw didn't like Andy Kaufman. I wonder why?

  • Such a genius. Full of originality and the desire to only entertain himself. He was a gift to us and it is so sad that he was taken from us at such an early age. Rest in Peace sweet Andy.

  • this isnt funny, people who 'like' this must feel more intellegent for getting this type of pathetic comedy, get off your high horse this is shit

  • @evade531

It may not be funny to everyone, but that's interesting, to be able and willing to do something like that on stage, and it was kind of new at that time I think. It's interesting, strange and unclear, as are the reasons for liking what he does. What I mean is that your idea sounds too serious... and also a bit disrespectful. Anyway, I'm not really a fan but I tought I'd tell you my idea.

  • @evade531

Reactions like yours are the punchline. People like you are the butt of the joke.

  • @peeeesh who are u ? u are no one, dont get involved in a youtube comment because u are socially backward

  • @evade531

    Thanks for proving my point.

  • @peeeesh must get lonely on ur pedastool

  • @evade531

I could say the same thing about you. Think about it.

  • if you think Andy wasnt/isnt funny: go to YT and watch "My breakfast with Blassie" a HILARIOUS movie that basically is curb your enthusiasm 30years ahead of its time.

  • Andy forced his audience to think about the Comedy, and He didn't feed them low brow comedy one liners, and dumbed down pap. Sometimes his pieces bordered on Performance Art, not necessarily always rapid fire, or situational comedy bits. I think the old adage though always applies... If you have to explain the joke, the Comedian hasn't done their job, and it isn't funny. There is never a dumb house crowd, you can't blame it on the Audience. A Comedian has to be fluid and adjust to his Audience.

  • Probably the greatest of all comedians who absolutely despised comedy.

  • This is funny because:

    1. It's so stupid

    2. It's so long and awkward that the audience is awkward

  • @1990osu You just failed the Kaufman test, and comedy test in general: if you have to explain it, it's not funny. You can't really explain what's funny about it. It just sort of is.

  • romanianskill? I'm afraid to live in a world where people think it's ok to have a username like that. I should know, I'm Romanian. Prejudice sucks.

  • this is more like drinking ice cream

  • @daltonalexander you sound like an Andy Warhol apologist

  • I like that this guy is dead.

  • @romanianskill you are such a dikhead ;)

  • @MrDannythedick andy kaufman would be proud of you, well done!

  • @romanianskill don't give a fuck ;)

  • @MrDannythedick andy kaufman is dead, get over it you loser.

  • @romanianskill i did ,i said ur dickhead cuz i haven't respect for dead people ,that's all ;)

  • @MrDannythedick you haven't respect for dead people? i think you're getting confused... maybe you're a ladyboy?

  • @romanianskill yeah well maybe i wrote it bad but whateva u get the point ;)

  • @MrDannythedick yeah, i get the point... you're a tranny mate...

  • @romanianskill if u think so :D

  • Improvisation means without a script. He isn't doing a monologue. He did shows like the has-been corner. He wanted to produce a show with his neighbor out watering his lawn playing as the host.

  • Go watch any sitcom that has a laugh track. Every ten seconds, without fail, there is a roar of overly-enthusiastic laughter, even though it's probably not very funny at all.

  • @namedULaika You found the punchline...Very good

  • who goes to restaurant just to eat ice cream XDD

  • i wish i could understand this fucking piece of shit, genius my balls

  • @ilgattofatto U MAD BRO? Stop being so Un-dude and maybe you´ll understand it...

  • @DonRMB only for american audiances maybe

  • You shouldnt need to explain comedy . This is unfunny crap.

  • @Edwardocatflappo I didn't need anyone to explain to me, and I laughed my ass off. So what'll it be? You going to try and tell me your opinion matters more than mine? Or can we agree that they're just that: opinions?

  • genius/raving lunatic

  • there will NEVER be another andy kaufman

  • @urban1337 and that's a great thing!

  • 22 people did not get it.

  • the only genius of Andy Kaufman is conning idiots who think they are so damn clever to buy into his sh*t comedy.

  • @FreddyTheJumpingCat I think Kauffmans genius is similar to Stephen Hawkings genius. Nobody has no idea what the f.... they are on about, so it must be genius.

  • @FreddyTheJumpingCat Irony to a painfully comical level. Anyway, fuck being so cynical. Smile and look on the bright side that some people enjoy it and go watch what you enjoy. Cheers and have a good day mate.

  • he has his moments like any comedian, this wasnt one of them

  • This is absolutely brilliant

  • He nailed that ice cream!

  • Andy Kaufman is an entertainer. I don't think of him as a comedian. I think of him as someone that I never know what to expect, usually something over the top and then it's something completely minimalist. Him reading the Great Gatsby for instance, is it funny in it's own right? No. The fact that he takes it so seriously is what makes it funny and how no one wants him to do it. I don't know, I won't say "if you don't get it then you're an idiot" but....it's definitely not for everyone.

  • @ericlebr Like most non-traditional entertainment. He's just being himself and doing what he thought was funny, not adhering to what is universally accepted SO with this logic, whether he's funny or not to you, he is doing exactly what he wanted in every way. A true individual.

  • Brilliant! Yes the taped laughter is kind of the point. If you didn't get that, then give up now. Yes the audience's nervous reaction is also the point, and yes we're zooming through post-modernism and out the other side so try to keep up. Is it funny? Well...no not really. But then nor is the Musical Box, Seven Chances, the Parrot Sketch, or the Life of Brian. People laugh at Annie Hall or Taxi Driver but not at the Mona Lisa or Andrei Rublev. Why? Who knows... doesn't really matter.

  • I'm hungry now..

  • i think a lot of these negative nancies wouldnt understand tim and eric awesome show great job, either

  • poor bastards... i remember when i didnt get andy kaufman. he is bold genius

  • Sometimes, I think Andy Kaufman makes me feel bad for thinking he's funny.

  • he says he's not a comedian, he's just showing how dumb people are when they try to laugh at something. The audience is the joke

either that, or he loves messing with people

  • this guy is one dimensional.

and still too obscure to consider "humor"

the crowd is laughing because they went to a comedy club and had no expectation of watching someone eat ice cream..it's awkward.so they laugh it off..people keep jumping onto the bandwagon until they start calling this "style" of

    humor "genius"

this guy is everything short of genius.

this act shows nothing of creativity, his view or "voice" of the world we all experience.

    and i know it's a joke, i know he's trolling

  • @CharacterProductions Wow that is the worst analysis of comedy and Andy Kaufman I have ever read. You sir are retarded.

  • @CharacterProductions

dude, he's got a taped recording of canned laughter he's playing that's been timed to happen everytime he takes a spoonful.

but to be fair, I think andy would like you a fuck ton beter than the fawners.

  • Yeah that's why anybody laughs at anything, not because its funny in itself, but because cool people have laughed at it first. Tool.

  • @cornsockgabz

    what?

  • "Andy Kaufman wasn't funny... blah blah blah... he was a jerk... blah... I'm an idiot and don't understand anything that isn't shoved down my throat... blah blah... if the mainstream TV didn't say it's funny then I hate it... BLAH!!"

I get tired of these comments on Andy's videos. Don't watch him if you don't like him!

  • @JoshSitar

the less they get it the funnyer it is..

  • what was that sound accompanying his eating?

  • Don't try to see something that's not fcking there. This isn't funny and Andy Kaufman was just a fluke and a fad. Most people are sheeps and that is the only reason he got to where he was. Since dumb fcking lemmings heard someone say he was funny and make up sh*t saying the joke is this and that "O~~~ now I get it!!! HE'S A GENIUS!!!" Seriously people have the balls to speak ur mind and see him for what he really is. A comedian that was just not funny.

  • so simple

    so stupid

    so funny

  • Kaufman takes a dump on stage and some retards laugh....quality

  • that was just..exhilerating..

  • Maybe I just don't get this kind of comedy but is he supposed to be so bad he's good? I'm not dissing him btw may he R.I.P.

  • @permexOQ its a joke on many levels, get them to watch him eat order food onstage and eat and ge got them to be entertained by the absurdity of it all. plus he get to use an improve sketch that got him thrown out of the same place just to show how good he really was

  • In the movie 'man in the moon' Kaufman asked the question what is "funny". The answer given was "silence". Truth be told, if ice cream eating Kaufman was a Christian you all would have broken from the spell and walked out of the room. Kaufman and his Jewishness took you for a drive around the sympathetic ww2 poland block. Kaufman was known for his social experiments -- 2010 and he's still got dummies laughing at a bowl of ice cream. G-d help us all.

  • @AussieMatters Que???????

  • he just trolled the audience

  • I heard he used to do really bizzare performaces like doing his laundry or lying motionless in a sleeping bag for twenty some minutes.

This could be about the time when he was on Taxi and just despised all the attention he was getting from it. Since he never truly considered himself as a comedian he just messed around with alot of these appearences.

He was either way ahead of his time or just being a prick to those who came to see him.

  • The joke is the tension. The situation breeds this sense there will be something out of the ordinary so the audience looks for it, but it doesn't happen. He adds a laugh track to simulate the idea of creating a performance out of the mundane. Its a classic shaggy dog story.

Andy plays on emotions, that was what made him considered to be such a genius. Comedians try and get a laugh, which is typically tied to one specific emotion. Andy tried to create situations that invoked other emotions.

  • Comment removed

  • @eternal0star Thats a very eloquent way of saying that was totally unfunny.

  • Maybe the joke is the fact, that all these years later (and back then too) people are arguing about what it is.

  • this reminds me of UCB's sushi skit

  • it's hard to describe this performance

  • @povilasbacevicius I think "eating ice cream" kinda covers it

  • Comment removed

  • He was ahead of his TIME. That's genius.

  • @Crusherv1 time and genius are both myths.

  • Someone give this guy a phonebook to read out of.

  • the waitress was pretty hot

  • "Can you put it in a soup bowl so I can stir it around?" - *audience laughs*...

What the fuck? How is this funny? It's like one of those stupid comics from the New Yorker magazine where the point is that you have to choose between admitting you don't get it, OR pretend you and the jackass who came up with the "joke" are smarter than all the people who are trying to figure out what's so funny.

  • @kendigjl just because you're an idiot doesn't mean you should suggest everyone else is... not many people can pull this off like he does.

  • @Demoncleanerrr Yeah, I can see how tough it would be to sit down and eat ice cream. But it's probably even more difficult to act like you find this genuinely funny. So hat's off to you, you sophisticated intellectual.

  • @kendigjl its one particular type of really dry humor - the problem is, thats all he does

i dont know why he was so popular

  • @kendigjl Good answer. You are a lot funnier than Andy Kaufmann.

  • @gonzomoya420

Then go watch martin lawrence and leave us to enjoy our ice cream.

  • @gonzomoya420

Sounds like the comedy in your country sucks.

  • @gonzomoya420 Martin Lawrence? Seriously now :D

  • @gonzomoya420 Fuck You Son Of A Bitch If I Ever See You Walking Down The Street Will Curb-Stomp You Fucking Teeth You Fuckface!

  • I wish I had people applauding me when I eat ice cream. Instead they angrily tell me that I'm fat, and an apple would be better for me. I smile and laugh when they say this, but later on, I cry. I cry a lot.

  • Guys, listen to the audience. They were there..They effing loved it. No one is committed enough to looking cool and hip to dig out a belly laugh, or atleast I'm not.

  • Poor audience members paying to see that, the joke is on them haha. The original troll

  • "Andy Warhol Eats a Hamburger", anybody?

  • what can i say? he´s just a genius. amazing what he did, when you think that today, comedians try to be smart and try hard to wrote some smart material to say and all that crap. Andy is some kind of distant future, in the past. GENIUS, that´s it.

  • hmm i dont understand it, hmm must be art, hmm its art it must be good hmm hmm hmm: total nonsense

  • crap

    unfunny

    just a man typing

    crap

    unfunny

  • how is this at all funny, in what way is he a genious hes just a slob

  • @edspacely92 Are you really that dumb? He was a genius.

  • @bluedavenger Yeah, Blue. I mean the icecream, the spoon, the mouth. FUCKEN INSPIRED!!!!!!!!!!

  • @edspacely92 It's just one of those things. Either you find it hilarious or you don't. I promise there is humor in it however you have to have that kind of sense of humor to "get it". Think of it like Monty Python. Some people love it but other people despise it and don't see what all the fuss is about.

  • @edspacely92 perhaps you would be better attuned to watching a comedian who swears alot and maybe burps or farts a few times... I imagine you4 brain could wrap itself around that a bit more efficiently.

  • oh my god ahahahahahaahahahaahahahahhahaaahahahaha

  • whaaaat!!!

  • dont really understand this... if i would be eating... no one would laugh at me... or at least in a bad way they would = (

  • He's awesome.

  • so that's where seinfeld got the idea. of an absolutely normal situation being funny.

  • Only a genius could be SO stupid. Always and forever my favorite comedian.!!

  • Arrogant bastard. He's like "only I could get paid to do this shit. Haha".

  • I don't think he was being arrogant. His mainstream career was always dangling by a thread, and he must have known that at any time it could drop. All he needed to do, to secure it, was 'play to the rules' of comedy, but he still refused to - so he must not have cared about the money or the fame.

  • love how he plays up to the canned laughter lol

  • I stir my ice cream around too.

  • Andy Kaufman... un genio.

  • right

  • "Okay, that's it."

    HA!

  • i can't even tell you why this is funny....but i almost wet my pants i was laughing so hard

  • That was some pro ice cream eating there

  • He ate that mother father like a BOSS.

The whole thing feels like like a parody of a comedy sketch in the same way a mock mock trial would be a parody of a mock trial or to use another anology, a satire on a clown .

  • (-FUNNY)(FUNNY)= -FUNNY = NOT FUNNY

  • @DaFuckyouat You should check your math...

(-FUNNY)(FUNNY)= -FUNNY TO THE SECOND POWER = POSITIVE MEGA FUNNY

  • omg, love it <3

  • It was not just about making the audience uncomfortable. It was also about recognising comedic situations in the mundane. But beyond that, it was about pushing the limits of what is standardly thought to be 'comedic' by society.

A reflective person with time on their hands can be entertained by a whole smorgasbord of unintentionally comedic things that human beings do. What Kaufman did was to try to share this sensibility with his audience members.

  • I don't see what the big hype is about Kaufman. Maybe I had to be around then to understand it.

  • @deusintroclades696 i just watched "man on the moon" it really captures andy well. worth watching.

  • I loved it. was the tape player playing "lion" sounds?

  • It's audience applause.

  • i cant stop thinking about this act everytime i eat icecream, just cant stop laughing1

  • @phisylus BECAUSE DANE COOK IS LAWL SO HILARIOUS!!!! HEERP A DERP DE DURP!!!!

  • @phisylus Or maybe you're just too stupid to understand this. Go watch some Hannah Montana, or somethin'

  • Hola yankees.

    watch?v=TIxTjiPKgOw

    Adios.

    Saludos.

  • Oh my gosh. I stir around my ice cream and I tend to get chocolate. I have so many things similar with my random idols. It`s amazing knowing so much, yet really so little.

    -God Bless Andy

  • He was a genius i mean cmon he read from the great gatsby and put the same book on the record genious

  • genius......... a shame most people didn't understand what he did back then; a shame many people still don't, 26 years after he died.

  • It's applause and cheering coming from a tape

  • It is amazing how Andy could take a simple thing like eating a dish of ice cream & actually make it funny.

  • only 1 comedian in 3000 million could get away with an act like that and make it hilarious, but thats what andy was, 1 in a million

  • yeah that's if it was hilarious and it wasn't... the jokes is on the people laughing at somthing not funny and it's Kaufman laughing at the audience. Wow

  • well REPKU I decided to stick your reply back up. Please enlighten REPKU what is the point of this and comedy. In my opinion this piece is self indulgent rubbish. It encourages elitist claptrap? Was it hilarious? Errr IMHO this sucked! Nothing more than performance art.

  • @bombertheelephant Every time I say "Kaufman sucked" people come out of the woodwork defending him. People were stoned out of their minds to enjoy him...

  • These are the same people that would pay millions for a Shark in formaldehyde or a putty tin with human excrement in it. They are out there unfortunately a lot of people do not have the courage to voice their opinion because they are outnumbered by airheads. If I think this is shit and Kaufman suck then he sucks... it's an opinion. Only time I got a laugh out of him was when he Latka. LMFAO

  • you're cut from the same cloth as me.... I checked out your web site.... pretty cool I really don't know how to negotiate the computer buttt. Hey if you want to rile someone go to "Andy Kaufman Midnite Special" the one posted by boyargee or something. He gets EXTREMELY upset if you critique his idol.. Just look how he responded to me!!! Keep the faith, brother!

  • @bombertheelephant It's because Kaufman likes making the audience feel "uncomfortable", and when people get uncomfortable, naturally they would laugh because it does not register in their usual mind set of a comedy act.

  • I agree. But don't call Andy a comedian. He was a song & dance man. But he was really good at making people laugh. Andy Kaufman was brilliant.

  • so funny hahaha

  • yes

  • I like how he announces that the skit is called "Eating Ice Cream," then takes two minutes to go through the menu before ordering the ice cream.

  • "okay that's it."

    awesome.

  • What is the noise coming from the radio?

  • it's a laugh track

  • omg *facepalm* he's just enjoying some chocolate ice cream...that's his sketch. and LOL canned laughter and applause on top of it. Dadaism FTW.

  • ...i dont get it

  • They're all waiting for something to happen, but nothing is happening...that's kinda funny!

  • the end is the best!! hahaha

  • This is my favourite video on youtube.

  • it's lowkey funny

but damn! the audience was dying! lol
