I was at this show, too, 3 rows back in front of Trey. Still my favorite place to see them (probably a half dozen times 90-92). I'm amazed by how SMALL their setup is!
I think their AC DC Bag from this era was much hotter than the way they play it now. I started seeing them in 91 so I know the differences from then to now. This was always one of my favorites and they don't quite tear it up like they did then on this one.
I bribed the doorman $10 to see this set my first show. Slow and sloppy? More like intentional. Not the craziest night here, but the interplay at 5:30 and on reminds us how much Fun they used to have onstage. Other highlights include Trey staggering and de-tuning his E string for Bathtub Gin, the stop-on-a-dime strobelight jam during Bowie, Jon using a shop-vac and peforming a hands-free solo, Mike playing BFFCFM on his knees; all part of the sponteneity that faded as they grew.
@reevolution137 lmao, not quite, go look at just the strumming chords and patterns for the songs of the Joy album, and compare them to anything from earlier. Theyre alot more complex.
@dillon1278 I'm sorry but your argument is invalid. Not that you might have more trouble with certain pieces, but no serious Phish fan would agree with you.
i think i made all the Colonial shows.. including their last there when they let us out for a "smoke break" and twice the crowd came back in.. i think phish is the reason they renovated the theatre!
I went to all the Colonial shows as well. Seeing Phish back then was really intense......and they always seemed to throw down at these little theater shows. The jams weren't as 'deep' as they'd get in later years, but the band was HUNGRY.
when i first got into phish i listened to a lot of early stuff, but now i cant get into it anymore. i guess its more of a historical curiousity to me.i need the more-experimental free improv of the late nineties. it is cool to see people gettin down hard this early in their career, however.
Hey I filmed this.....there are better copies.

obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. His playing was every bit as pronounced then as it is now, if not at this particular show.
Back then their music was highly challenging, it takes a pro to be able to play much of it. The stuff they write now an amateur could learn.

That said, its all awesome.

@dillon1278, I knew the whole album on guitar by the second listen. The only challenging one was light.
TTE is just a bunch of riffs put into one song, nothing far out and the rest of the album is standard stuff.

@reevolution137 Maybe its just personal differences? I had a much easier time learning the classics like Coil and AC/DC

The lack of views for this video is indicative of the ignorance of the average modern phish fan. You do have no clue
