For those who have never heard it, I highly recommend the Steve Roach and Robert Rich collaboration album "Strata" (1990), it is superb. A perfect blend of synthesized sounds with organic, earthy sounding instrumentation. Not 100% drift ambient, I suppose, since it has some light percussion. But check it out.

I have the cassette of this. My boombox died. I got the cd - my cd player died. I got my computer in 08 so I downloaded the cd to my laptop. This is not only Steve Roach's masterpiece, this is one of the most luminous albums, right up there with "White Arcades" (Budd) and "the Shutov Assembly" (Eno), ever recorded.

I used to spent hours listening to this album. Although very minimalist, I am still musically greatly influenced by such atmospheres. Always worth of more than a listen, in my opinion. A dreamy, ethereal wall of sound.

I read where this piece was made after Steve had talked with a lady that had a Near Death Experience. Steve recreated what she described as the sound she heard on the other side.

I bought the short 8 minute version of this on amazon, but the 30 something minute version is waaaay better. I remember when I first heard this on Pandora like a year ago I think, I fell in love!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  What an amazingly beautiful song, I mean like, oh my gosh, I can't believe how like crazily amazing it is.

This is quite simply, for me, THE benchmark which all other 'ambient' music should be judged. Personally speaking, I think God himself would approve.

Years ago in my youth, one night I lay in a hot bath in the dark with this playing and for a time I was absorbed into eternity.

Unfortunately i did not find any other album of his that i like so much as this one, they all seemed to me more "spacey" and more dark....Does anyone have a suggestion for me?? I'm actually looking for peaceful music like this to be playing on the background for my meditation practices....

Steve's music is far more than relaxing...it transports me to the world we can only imagine, the great super-reality of God. This was the first Steve Roach album I bought in the 80's, and helped me in dealing with the current reality, the one wherein I feel a stranger and out of place.

Steve Roach is one of the New Age (ugh, hate how that term's been coopted and bastardized) artists whose ambiant trance/cosmic space music opened a new world of possibility & hope for me, closer to the infinite realm of Higher Power Christ Godhead Great Spirit. IT was transformative, to help me deal w/ personal tragedy. Him and Richard Burmer, Brian Eno, Hearts of Space, etc. This music is so deep and has SO many powerful memories for me. Peace OuT.
