  • Thank you so much! These videos helped me to understand how to back them up. I am currently learning how to drive tractor trailers and backing up is confusing for me. Your video explained what I am doing wrong. Can't wait to try it out now :) Thanks again

  • your videos are great , nice job , it really helped me .thanks.

  • Thank you

  • Awesome videos! Im going for my CDL in a month and i figured id get a leg up on the competition and your videos have been very useful, thank you.

  • i will soon make the driving licence for trucks so your videos are very helpful, thanks!

  • Yes Sir, Very helpful

  • Not Bad Thank You

  • Very good vid, now i can finally get my boat in the water! HAHA

  • @theblacksheep1000 lol you can that is true

  • Jim one of the other people and You are on to something what we need is when you say turn the wheel in any direction "slightly" means nothing to a newbee please explain in terms of a CLOCK are we turn to 3 oclock to the right then 9oclock to the left (gym locker). Any person that says this is not a difficult task is full of it back is one accident and these CDL "schools" no coment.

  • this should not be rocket science if this is part of your job. if you need silly YouTube videos to help you back up, you're fucked.

  • @lisaKDL You know, I'm in school right now for my CDL, and the videos that he's making have put the turning into the right perspective for me. But, yes, if you are already driving and don't know how to back up then you are f***ed! These are the things you need to get a license, so drivers already out there wouldn't need this as much! Learning this job is the hardest thing I have done yet, and I have been a mom, a pharmacy technician, and had various other jobs.

  • My two brothers have class a cdl. I am about to get mine soon I got a class b .but I can't thank you enough master. Thanks for your knowledge.

  • CLASSIC

  • Very helpful video, thanks for doing them, the sharpie drawings really make it.....ie; I can visually see what you mean and it is very helpful.

  • Yes.... this is HELPFUL.. I need to learn to back up quickly as I've got some shunt driver jobs that I would like to do , and will be based on my skill... thanks for creating these videos.

  • Note my instructors told us a simple maxim about straight line backing. MORE IS LESS AND LESS IS MORE. The More you turn the wheel the less control you have. like wise the less you turn the wheel the more control you have. I have lived by that for the past 15 years. Over steering is one of the biggest problems new guys have. Just wanted to pass that along.. EXCELLENT VIDEOS.

  • Good instruction Jim...........When I went to truck school, there were many students who had NO CONCEPT of backing up.

  • I don't drive a truck. But this video is awesome. I always wondered how y'all did that.

  • Thanks Jim. And I did get your book from Amazon.com about a month back. Lots of good information.

  • Say the steering wheel is turned all the way to the right - does the whole trailer move in a clock-wise direction as you're backing? And counter clock-wise if steering wheel is turned all the way to left?

  • @blackapricot1 I never thought of it that way ,but yes, it would move clockwise as you're backing up if the wheel was turned to the right, and just the opposite if turned left. To take your clock example further, if the tractor and trailer were starting out in a straight line with the tractor pointed at 12:00 and the back of the trailer at 6:00, if you backed with the wheel turned to the right the back of the trailer would start turning towards 9:00.

  • @jimscee You wouldn't be able to go all the way around the clock though, unless you had the wheel turned slightly one way or another. If you backed up turning the wheel all the way to the right and kept the wheel all the way to the right, by the time the back of the trailer started getting to 9:00 the tractor would be jackknifed up against the trailer, possibly damaging the tractor. But with the wheel turned at less of an angle and keeping it at that angle, you can keep going around in a circle.

  • That is what auto backing is for :). NO need to know how to back up a truck. Soon trucks will be driving without drivers..well give it 10-15 years.

  • Thanks ALot...

  • I got what you explained. Thanks.

  • Great info. I am about to enter TD school after 25 years as an auto mechanic. I'll watch more of your vids. Thanks for posting.

  • good job,thanks

  • Great videos and very helpful, you should make videos that how parallel parking, thanks again.

  • good video

  • Hi Jim Brilliant vids

Where can i get your book

  • Comment removed

  • wow! thanks very helpful!

  • Very helpful

  • thanks so much! My Dad tried to show me how to back up his boat trailer years ago... spent most of his time yelling at me! :) I've been intimidated by it ever since!

    Your explanation/demonstration actually made sense!

    Thanks again.

  • I think these videos are so helpful. I'm a new driver and still have issues with backing up. Usually takes about 20 min for me to back up in tight weird spaces like alleys. Keep the videos coming.

  • I find it good to see this explaination for who want to leren..

  • Very helpful

    Thank you

  • I'm just out school with my CDL, but feel I still have no skill or confidence about backing. Please keep the videos coming. I can't tell you how helpful it is to hear your sensible explanations with diagrams. Most videos on backing are about the driver and how well they did or didn't back. I'm looking for technique and that's what your videos provide. I will be buying your book! Thanks again.

    --Renee

  • I've heard backing a long trailer like a 53 for example is easier than backing say.. a uhaul because the bigger trailer is less responsive during backing. Is that true?

  • @Kopihucky Yes, I think it's true. With a small trailer every little turn of the steering wheel makes a big difference in where the trailer goes, where with a large trailer you have a little more time to adjust where it's going. One of my videos is about backing a short trailer.

  • @jimscee

LOVE backing a jet ski trailer, with no jet skis on it lol.

  • @jimscee i agree. i would have loved your instruction back in 1997. lol. but i learned from a good instructor. anyhoo imho its far easier to drive something this size. once you get used to the size of it, it is far more controllable

  • Good information

  • thank you. this video is very professional. I deeply appreciate your input.

  • Thanks for this video..I am going to watch the next one so I can hopefully get thru class. I tried straight backing today and was not able to get that trailer straight to safe my life!! Thank God for another day!

  • @zenati7 it takes awhile to get used to the steering when you back up. Try making a slighter turn of the wheel. As far as the speed you control that. If the transmission has a high and low range make sure it's in the low range before you put it in reverse.

  • what trucking company do u drive for and were r they based out of

  • @jonnboy1234567890 CPC Logistics based in St Louis, Mo. They provide drivers for Bridgestone/Firestone Tire, where I've been driving for 5 years now. I work in central NY.

  • @jimscee ok thanks whats the pay cpm

  • great video ..... thanks

  • Man, I have been looking for this for a while. I have a fifth wheel and never pulled anything but off the bumper. I have some of the basics down, and learn about getting the setup right the hard way. Now I struggle if I have to make a lateral move, like if I miss my trailer position by two feet and need to move the whole rig over, That bites me every time. I would be better off leaving and coming back and reparking from the start.

  • I couldn't get the backing up perfected so I quite and became a helicopter pilot now I love my job.

  • @yumyumsashimi Wow. I would think flying a helicopter would be harder than driving a truck. But congratulations, I'm glad you love that job.

  • Your videos are great, and very helpful. I'm ordering your book. Thanks. I'm in truck school now, but I want as much "heads up" as I can get before I get working.

  • Good video with instruction, thanks!

  • What I am thinking as I am backing up and looking back and forth between the right and left side mirrors, looking at the sides of the trailer, is "too far right, turn right; too far left, turn left."

  • @LarryParker1958 First time I've heard that. Good idea, that'll work.

  • @LarryParker1958 SOMEONE TOLD ME... if you want the trailer to turn to the right turn right; if you want the trailer to turn to the left turn left ??? ANOTHER GUY TOLD ME THE OPPOSITE... if you want the trailer to turn to the left turn to the right; if you want the trailer to turn to the right turn to the left ??? SO WHO IS RIGHT HERE???

  • @rotcataergeht Your second comment is correct. To back a tractor with one trailer you would turn the steering wheel the opposite of what you would do in a car.

To back the trailer to the left, turn the steering wheel to the right. This is the same thing you would do if you are backing a pickup truck that is towing a boat on a trailer.

  • @LarryParker1958 Put your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel and then move them while holding onto the steering wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go. ie; want trailer to go to the right, hands on the bottom of the steering wheel, move them to the right.

  • I just got a job at Halliburton and they're putting me through driving school to get my class 1 driver's license. I've never backed up trailors before so your videos are helping out a lot haha... I hope I pass my road test.

  • That was helpful, as a woman I've towed once and didn't back up. I just rented a Uhaul trailer, I thought I knew what I was doing till I tried to back up. It took me awhile! I figured I better see if utube has how to videos on this. Thank you for posting yours :)

  • your videos are very helpful

  • Very helpful. I'm still learning how to better back up and move my horse trailer around. Getting better but found your advice very useful. Thank you for creating and posting these. ~John in Seattle

  • @pavel4 me too lol

  • so far this video is good. im in truckdriving school. and did all the class room work. today was my 2nd day in the truck and the teacher had me do 90turn back up. it was hard. im going to watch your videos and see if this helps me tomorrow

  • Thanks a lot i'm working at plumb pak and i'm been trained on driving the yeard truck but they only gave me 20 hr to lern so yea it has not been fun so watching this videos helps on tip that i need to know thank you so much

  • This vid helped I run a line pump thanks

  • Great video. Helped me with the backup at DMV. Thanks

  • Very helpful thanks

  • I was wondering if you have a video of backing in a parking spot at a 45 degree angle?

  • 18 wheelr

  • This is very helpful thank u

  • hi its a good lessonbut there is one more thing is the aproach is very important when backing up ,

  • VERY IMPORTANT. Any new driver who is learning to get AZ licence is to ask your instructor to teach u how to reverse right from the 3 day of your driving on road. Watch this video again and again and u will be fine. Thanks for the video Doc

  • su-f-ing-perb....good simple instructions with great practical application. A true professional...

  • Great videos, thanks!

  • That's good.. What about blind side backing?

  • @Razorback30001 Watch my video How to back up a tractor trailer pt. 2

  • thanks, my dad is working at uhaul now and he needed to learn how to back up a trailer.

  • I have never driven a truck but when I was learning to drive my uncle hooked a trailor to the front of a small farm tractor and made me push it around the ranch. lol I figured it out pretty quick and now when I am backing a trailor the whole thing of the trailor going the opposite direction is totally natural. lol I love being a mid aged woman and droping everyones jaw when I whip a trailor exactly where I want it. It just take practice and it becomes natural.

  • Greetings Jim. I Had Watched Your Videos Before, But Came Back To Watch This One In Particular The Straight Backing Up. I have My CDL Class A Permit From New York State I Live In Brooklyn New York. My Road Test Is This Thursday Nov. 4 2010. My Only Difficulty Is That Staright Backing Up. That Why I Came Back To Watch Your Video. I Will Keep You Posted About My Road Test On Thursday. Thank You Again Jim For Your Great Helpful Videos. God Bless Judy From Brooklyn New York.... ;)

  • Thanks! You are a pro at driving and teaching.

  • great video

  • Thank You Very Much Jim, Great Videos. God Bless. Onyx From Brooklyn New York.

  • thanks for the video. Iam currently training with my company and found your video very helpful.

  • Going to slow makes backing harder, you should use the gas a little when you're backing.

  • The biggest mistake I made when first learning to back was over reacting and over steering. Then I would end up chasing the back of the trailer.Just little movements of the steering wheel is all that is needed.

  • The longer the trailer and the shorter the tractor the easier it is. Maneurving equipment is just common sense.

  • Good video. I watched it because I just towed a log splitter for the first time and had to backup. I tried like 6 six times and I kept jackknifing to wear I though I would back into the side of the splitter. I get the concept, but what to do when you can't see what you are towing from your mirrors? It was too small to see around the truck until it jackknifed. it was a tight spot as well. end up unhitching and rehitching. thanks!

  • @jcrainct I just put up a video about backing a short trailer but I don't know if it would help with a log splitter. Can you see it if you roll down the window, put your head out the window and look back? With a short trailer, after you start backing at an angle you have to quickly turn the wheel back in the other direction to follow it. But at least with a short trailer you can see the sides. With a log splitter hitching and unhitching might be the way to go.

  • @jimscee Thanks! I can' see it when I look out the window, it's that narrow. I returned the splitter since my rental was up, but the info is good for future. I guess the trick is have a lot of space, so you straighten out and realign with what ever you're backing into. right?

  • very helpful vids thx

  • it was very helpful 10x for this video !! keep up the good work !!

  • These videos are awesome, they got theory to match the videos and also model trucks demonstrations. Better technical approach in my book.

  • I am looking forward to doing the same thing soon...Right now I working on getting my A class CDL. Great vid.

  • love your videos bro. i've enrolled in a 12 week weekend course at a local school here in Tn. i have 3 weekends left, although i'm doing ok i still need some better understanding for alley docking and parallel parking so i ordered your book today. hopefully with the book and what i already know i don't get more confused

  • jim thankyou so much for ur video i was going to a school that was suppose to teach me to drive a tractor and trailor in three weeks after one and half week i was so stressed out i am not enrolled to go to a school there lesson plan will be ten weeks that starts in Aug i watch ur video and i have learned so much in these compared to that school wish me luck

  • @patty3437 Good luck. Hope the videos help. Jim

  • Good Videos

  • Awesome Videos Going To Trucking School And Your videos Helps A lot. Thanks So Much. Keep Making Them....

  • Jim you the man Ive been out of the truck industry for 3 years and Im looking to get back in it. I really appreciate you takin the time making these videos it was a very well made refresher course for me. I also purchased your book and can't wait to get some more of your good training. Thanks alot.

  • Oh man thank you so much for these videos.I tried going for swift one time but failed because I couldn't figure out how to get the trailer where I wanted to go.When I asked what I should be looking for noone could tell me.So I kept messing up.I'm going to try again. Thanks

  • Just a quick question, do you think good drivers are made or is it a natural talent?

  • @bobdole92 I think that almost anyone can learn to drive a tractor trailer. But then, like most jobs, you need at least a couple years experience to get good at it. You need to be especially careful during this time until you get used to handling the truck in different situations.

  • @jimscee Awesome, thanks a lot i am continuing to watch all of your videos as truck driving is an interest of mine

  • hi ,the video helped me alot , great job, your the man.

im studying for my test, this and other info is helping me.

to bad u dont leave in kc,i could use the help.

  • @geormorris Thanks. I used to deliver to a company outside of Kansas City. They were in that underground industrial area. Pretty neat driving through there (as long as you don't make any wrong turns)

  • thank you it helped alot

  • Great! THANKS!!!!!

  • this helps me a LOT...thank you very much

  • I like the video

  • Why put in reverse, if just backing up?

  • You are an amazing teacher!

I wish you were my teacher.

  • Great videos thanks for putting them on.Makes it easier when someone explains it like this !!

  • thanks for the tips , I plan on driving truck when I graduate high school and the trailer that i've learned how to back up is my dad's lawnmower trailer, its a medium sized one and that thing was a pain in the ass to back up

  • When I back a Trailer I put my hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and turn the wheel the way I want my trailer to go. That eliminates the confusion of having to turn the wheel the opposite way you want the trailer to go. I hope this tip is helpful.

  • Thanks, it's a good tip and I mention it in my book. As we commented on my part 3 video, if you're used to thinking of how you turn the TOP of the steering wheel, you can think of turning it TOWARDS the obstacle that you want to avoid. I've never thought of it this way but you can try it. For new drivers don't get discouraged. After awhile you won't have to think about it as much. Remember, almost any problem with backing can be solved by going slowly.

  • @jimscee Thanks! I went to a small truck driving school about 4 months ago and got my class A cdl. I start my first job tomarrow. It's just a small local job part time , but it gives me the shot at some experience.

There is a tricky back up thats got me nervous, however I found your viedo helpful. I'll be thinking about it tomarrow to be sure. Thanks

    C.Brown

  • @wdfordy i always hated that advice...you shouldnt have to put your hand on the bottom of the wheel to know which way to turn the wheel while backing

  • @CarlosCoy135 what ever works for you. but when you are first starting out it can be confusing

  • These videos are very helpful. I am in school for it and right now I have the pre trip down and i drive pretty good too but the straight line back is what REALLY gets me.

  • @triplenickel44 try not to over steer young buck!

  • Awesome, Im training for a yard dog position next week, and want to move on to driving, these videos you've made are great and informative. Thanks

  • Excellent video!!!

  • The video is awesome, specially for me that im learning right now.

  • love the toy explaination thanks

  • Good point about backing up slowly! They always told me "R" stands for reverse, not race. These same principles are good for ANY driver to know. I frequently pull tag along trailers with a pickup.

  • I Just started Truck driving school and I hope I can find a few more like this that can give me an advantage over the other students!!

  • Thanks bro, very informative.

  • excellent, your doing a good job and it helps.

  • i bet ya that back up warning sounds get annoying huh lol......

  • Comment removed

  • I have been driving trucks for 12 years and I wish those videos was out then..They are very easy to understand and I would recomend that other driver would watch them.

  • Everybody has their own style, for me using both hands and shuffling the wheel works best for me

  • This is probably the best explanation of the science of backing that i've seen yet. Good job!

  • man, ur videos are great,.. please post more about backing up..

    Gracias !!! amigo...

  • it really helps im a licensed truck driver for 4 years now and i still haven´t mastered going reverse, thanks and keep em coming 10-7

  • Love the videos, please keep them coming.

  • Very informative really like your vids

  • THANK YOU the videos gave me enough courage to help tow cars for my dad, thanks dude. though my load is many time smaller the basics are still the same,

  • I will buy a trailer motorhome and your video is giving me preliminary information on how to back up a trailer. Big help, thank you.

  • Excellent video. You've just sold another copy of your book!

  • i wish i could have a instructor like you to teach me how to drive a truck....my dad taught me on his 13 spd mack. all hands on.....your videos are very helpful and informative keep it up

  • An excellent video, I'm thinking about getting a drivers licence for trucks and this video was pretty informative thnx

  • Very informative, More videos please!

  • Great videos! I plan on checking out all of the other videos you have.

I am going to be attending a CDL Class A course with winter and I am trying to learn as much as I can ahead of time.

    Thank you.

  • Good stuff. Looking forward to more.

  • Thanks mbwolf, for the nice message. No, I don't teach trucking for a living. But I drive it for a living. Some of my stops are 3 or 4 hours apart so I have plenty of time to think of what I'm going to say on these videos. I hope to have another backup video on within the next couple days. Jim

  • Your videos are nice. thank you for posting them

  • Do you do this for a living? Because you should, you have a simple, yet very effective way of explaining things. I've viewed many trucking tutorials on you tube, and what I've seen from you, so far, has been among the most useful.
