Wow, don't we do this to cattle as well in some respects? Isn't horse meat a delicacy in some countries? I don't think horse racing is soley to blame for this problem. How about the other types of sport we use horses for, or other types of work. Like BenBarnesGirl said, maybe more of a breeding cap should be implemented.
horse racing is not a cruel industry, yes all industry have there goods and bads but horses naturally love to jump, buck, rear and yes RUN. Horses in the racing industry have top blood lines, giving them perfection and the competitive edge. The people who try to cheat and who truly dont have the love for horses are what make the industry look bad. also alot of former race horses get good homes after their racing carreers are over.the problem is not horse racign it is horse slaughter
I don't think the real problem is horse racing. There should be a cap on horse breeding for each year. There is no reason to breed one stallion with 100 mares in a breeding season. There should also be more adoption programs set up to help those horses that have met their race age for those farms that don't want them anymore. We adopt race horses to save from slaughter and they are some of the best horses. They have a lot of life left to live once they are retired out.
who cares, its a horse. do you guys realize how many people are dying in the middle east or being tortured in united states maximum security prisons as an interrogation technique? and you are all worked up about the horses... learn to prioritize.
This is an atrocity! Any people who think this is an acceptable thing need to be treated the same way. I hate the infamous greed of humans. These noble creatures deserve FAR BETTER and I hope those involved have a miserable end!!!
I think peta needs to get real they make it sound alot worse than it is.....they say that 10000 TB's from north america will go to slaughter every year well yes that may be true but it is such a small fraction of thoroughbreds that are even born each year!! In kentucky alone there are 50,000 foals born each year..... and they do need that many to get a chance at a good race horse!! What i am trying to say is peta does not no what they are talking about! I do think this is very sad though!!!!!!!
@horseloverboy1 why. why? why do they need a race horse. Why is there such THING as race horsing. And, you make it seem like that's not a big number. One slaughter for an animal is bad! Their lives are just as important to them as mine is to me. And Peta DOES know what their talking about; you don't. Not trying to be mean, but this is just wrong.
Never really been a big horse racing fan and do not know much about it, but I do not think the slaughtering is the thing that should stop but the amount of horses they breed is obviously unnecessary and should be more regulated. You cant save every animal it would end up taking to much space and food and especially saving horses, they need space to run sometimes its best to put some down and eat as bad as it sounds.
I adore you PETA. I never understood you guys before, or vegans. Now I do, 100%, and I will fight alongside you, sign any petition--just do me one favor? Make a more durable bunny necklace :D the eyes fell out....lol
So if slaughter is bad, what is the solution for all of the unwanted horses? What do we do with them, where do they go? I totally agree that there needs to be caps put on how many horses bred per year, but slaughter, when regulated, is a good, and very NECESSARY thing.
And Eight Belle's cousin? Seriously, like there is only one! Ahhhh....PETA....big PITA!!
roaming free eating apples... moron.. Why does this even have the title Eight Belle's cousin?? Why bring a horse (who was TESTED DRUG FREE) and broke down into the picture?? Footage on this video was of a cow being slaughtered anyway. the "360 Lifecycle Fund".. I would never pay $360 for a transfer of ownership and it already costs between $500-$1,500 to register a TB anyway.. Don't play in the business if you are questioning if you can/cannot afford to support a horse.
I HATE horse racing!... they need to stop this, all of these people who have so much money to waste, I've seen their websites, the stud fees alone would feed all of our starving fellow Americans!... these people are so blinded by their own greed and addictions. The saddest thing is that horse racing is so glorified by Movies, TV series and articles that this disease will always be among us... It is a very smart idea from PETA to actually start putting some money away in this industry for them.
My uncle is a humongous "horse trainer," and I've always just been sickened by this industry ever since I was a little kid. My relatives always go into denial when I try to explain the truth about the "sport." This is disgusting. -__-
@Toast488 I think you should get real..... horse racing is a great sport and there is many horses that love to run and cant wait to run! Also some trainers take care of there horses like they are there children! You have no idea what you are talking about!

@JoleneRamsahai you should go spend time around race horses and learn that no one is forcing them to do anything these horses love to run and its usually hard to make them quit
