The reason Bill Watterson ended the strip is because he was tired of fighting merchandisers. TV executives, and everyone else that wanted a piece of Calvin and Hobbes.

Charles M. Schulz did it with peanuts and made a shitload off of the merchandise and tv shows., so did Jim Davis with Garfield

However Bill Watterson felt that this lessened the strip into something that wasn't artwork, which was the only thing he wanted to do. Have you seen the sunday strips, especially the later ones?

He still gets calls to this day from people asking if they can use Calvin and Hobbes likeness for merchandise.

Because the strip is just that Fucking good.

Calvin and Hobbes was my favorite strip in 1st grade and it still is to this day, Fifteen years later.

I love Garfield and Foxtrot, But No one else has come close to being this good.

to be honest i only liked the parts where there was no dialogue in the actual comics because for example, it just doesnt mean much to just show calvin kissing susies hand - its way out of context and gives people the wrong idea (although I guess since its a tribute, it would be mostly for people like myself who remember that he was doing it because she "found" hobbes).
