I thought everyone already knew that the PS3 Online service is free for basic functions but to play games you have to pay the publisher. Although the publishers may offer in game advertisements if you want it for free.

As far as I can tell the publishers have to set up there own servers which means you will not have to pay sony but you have to pay the devs/publishers.

Also remember the bluray standard player is not just for watching HD Movies, it also supports the games on the ps3, with more space on a BD u dont have to compress large games which loses picture quality when compressed and it also gives space for load times and they can also add more content for a game which is awsome to me. I think bluray is the future and sony is giving u a choice if u want to take gaming and movies to the true next generation of gaming.

He says "by offering a variety of functions beyond just gaming.." which simply means by offering something more than what the Playstation currently offers. In public speaking language he was simply leading the topic into discussing Sony's online network, not saying at all the gaming will be free.
