Had no idea what kind of music weather report was..it was 1977..I took my allowance..a quarter a day...$7 for the weather report album...it was the hat with lightning coming out of it that got me..
Jaco, sono anni che ascolto la tua musica, è straordinario constatare come, a distanza di tempo, essa mi faccia ancora venire brividi lungo la schiena. GRAZIE!!!
I have no idea why people like this 'jazz' version of Manhattan Transfer's great tune...1. there are no sexy vocals 2. no dancing 3. everyone seems to be showing-off to impress. rank i say
@Cayke1 sorry dude but you dont understand talent and music these guys wrote the song not manhattan transfers so that version would not exist without these guys
When I first heard 'Birdland', 'Teen Town' and 'Havona' on Weather Report's 1977 'Heavy Weather' release, I knew then and there new, exciting modern jazz ground had been broken and it would never be the same. I was 16 at the time. Jaco was hot after coming off Bright Size Life with Pat Metheny, Alex Acuna was flaming on the drums and what can you say about Wayne Shorter, phenomenal. God rest your souls, Joe and Jaco. You are missed.
Shorter is one of the greatest saxophonists ever. Nobody saved anybody. Jaco is the greatest electric bass ever. Joe is one of a kind. Peter is great. This band is as good as it gets. Saw them in 1980. They were amazing.
Shorter is one of the greatest saxophonists ever. Nobody saved anybody. Jaco is the greatest electric bass ever. Joe is one of a kind. Peter is great. This band is as good as it gets. Saw them in 1980. They were amazing.
The synth out of tune at the end ruins this take. I love this tune and the musicianship of these guys but the bottom fell out with the intonation difficulties of trying to play horn, sing the same notes and have the synth take all the beauty away. The CD version I've heard cooks like no tomorrow at this point, so much so that I get upset that they fade at the end cause I don't want it to stop...
Pure musicianship. Look at the moment at 4:44 where Wayne loses his microphone or something and then looks at Zawinul for help. Zawinul plays exactly what Wayne was supposed to play only on the keyboards. Absolute masters.
@skatermgee I think that was supposed to happen though, because Wayne carried on singing. :P well is it really singing, more like moaning in a hight pitched voice.
Yes one of the greatest bass players ever this wasn't meant to be a ignorant more a joke but i see some people can't take a joke over youtube these days. being a bass player my self i think i know who he his thank you very much.
@Natejitsu, The story about the butter knife is real, those are just markings on the neck, and the voicing, while doing the walk was amazing, the are a lot of good players (bass) today, but there was only one Jaco
In 25 years of playing, the only time I've ever put down a set of drum sticks in frustration was when I was trying to get this part down. I finally got it, but it was a bitch. I'd either make a mistake or flat run out of stamina during the lengthy final marathon chorus. Jazz drumming is well set apart. I don't know how Peter Erskine pulled this off while wearing a sweater.
@fukinblowme Why? It's just a medium tempo shuffle. Very tiplety played here. On the studio recording played more like a disco beat but both renditions are simpler than a lot of other Fusion tunes. What I could never get is most Mahavishnu or Return To Forever but can play most of that now; just takes time.
God bless John, Mary Julius and Felix, your father was an inspiration to me and the world, a generation mourns his loss, but we will always have the music, love and peace, Vinny
@rogalea He used a butter knife to rip the frets off his jazz bass neck, then he filled it with wood putty, and refinished the neck, or so I believe. So, to answer your question, yes, those are just markings.
@saftpackerl there was definately something weird going on.. sounded like the arpegiater was running when he was holding down a note... and it was out of tune yeah
I was watching this video and realist something; Jaco was a white man and Jimi Hendrix a black man. Both could be called the best in the particular instrument. But it breaks all stereotypes, a white man on bass and a black man on guitar, haha.
Interesting. @NattMoore - As good as this is, it Jazz and alot of people just don't get it. Put Joco with say the chillie Peppers (actually I'd like to see that) And veiwership would go way up.
Jaco unrepeatable. A lot of people try to imitate, but not too much to go. And even the best do not go the way he could Pastorius. Jaco was the god himself. Why is it always the best ones to die soon? Rotten world we live. But the spirit of Jaco will never disappear .. never ..
@crowth1986 are you FUCKING kidding me???? jaco is quite possibly the best bassist of ALL. FUCKING. TIME. i know billy sheehan is pretty good, but he plays with nowhere NEAR the fucking soul or skill that jaco did, jaco is pretty much the end all be all of bassists, honestly i cant think of anyone i admire more when it comes to bass, i could accept you coment if you phrased it like "oh, i'm not a real fan of this, but whatever" but straight out fucking talking shit about JACO? no. thats not OK.
@crowth1986 Oh my fucking god. I can let go that you dont think he's the best of all time. a lot of guys happen to think he was, I'm one of them. but when you put billy sheehan on a higher level and I know just because you like his shred solos and bullshit, he doesnt even know what fucking notes he's playing. You just presented yourself as having no musical taste whatsoever, all you seek in musicians is image. Jaco had the best image, and the best notes. go do some english shit you fat fuck

Jaco unrepeatable. A lot of people try to imitate, but not too much to go. And even the best do not go the way he could Pastorius. Jaco was the god himself. Why is it always the best ones to die soon? Rotten world we live. But the spirit of Jaco will never disappear .. never ..

@crowth1986 you can't compare two totally different players.you can have your opinion on what is 'good' and what's not.But keep that to yourself!
