These solid rocket boosters are amazing. The sheer power behind them boggles the mind. They each have about 80% more thrust than an F1 Rocket engine used on Saturn V rocket. Had we used 5 SRBS instead we could have lifted 2 million more pounds off the ground, yet requiring a larger second stage to compensate for the smaller burn time.
I live not far from the Kennedy Space Center so I've seen most of the launches, and I remember when this one went off it woke me up in the middle of the night from my house and windows shaking and things falling off my wall. It makes me sad that Obama is ending the NASA program, because it's a spectacular sight :[
@AmystikaAngel Obama is not ending the space program. The shuttle program is ending because it is outdated and should have ended years ago and has nothing to do with Obama . I'm not an Obama supporter, but I don't like misinformation either. The space program is continuing.
I was at the launch for the Discover on April 5th and it was my first time seeing a shuttle launch in person and it was just absolutely spectacular. I love president Obama but I seriously hope that we will continue to have the greatest space program in the world.
My sister works for NASA and one year while we vacationing in Florida she asked if we wanted to go to Disney World or go watch a shuttle launch. ( She already had the pass for NASA'S restricted viewing area ) We chose Disney World. I regret it now that I'm all grown. I would LOVE to see a launch lve and in person..
'At the moment when the pyramid of flame rose to a prodigious height in the air it lighted up the whole of Florida, and for an incalculable moment day was substituted for night over a considerable extent of country. This immense column of fire was perceived for a hundred miles out at sea...' From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne published 1865
This is on my life list. . watching one of these. Thanks DIS for sharing it with us!! I believe that the word, "Awsome" is used far too much but in this case, it is appropriate. :) Five stars and I rarely give them out.
U r right, however I live not far from Kennedy/Canaveral, everyone around here pretty much knows when the launch dates are..lol, NASA has a launch date schedule on tgher website...It is the most amazing thing to watch...especially the night launches,,such as this video
YEAH, LOVE TO SCREAM, YEAH!!!! but that was cool, my cousin had a video of the same one, but 8 miles away straight from the other side of the water, looked like something out of a film
Yea it was awesome. Me and my friends drove from Melbourne and got there 5 mins. before the launch. We were on US 1 right across from the launch pad. It was my first night launch and it was the coolest thing I have ever seen. I wish there wasnt a low ceiling cause i would have loved to see it go all the way into space.
omg u are so lucky that looked just amazing i would love to see that! what amaziing history! i loved the smoke at the end how it just looked so cool lol i want to see one so badly!!! AWESOME
Pretty soon the shuttle program will end, and you will never be able to see it again. It is an amazing piece of living history, and one day you may be sorry that you never went. I plan to try to see STS-125 launch in October.
Fantastic, visited florida and was planning a visit but got hit by hurricane charley instead, but this is enough to get us back, would love to see this for real. Excellent
Bawb you will be missed. Thank you for being you and for giving us your unique view of the world and life in general. If ever there was a person who enjoyed life to the fullest, it was you. Just really wishing that you could have enjoyed it longer. Thanks for the memories.
We were on down the coast on Melbourne Beach, and it was just as breathtaking. What makes it spectacular is we were 40 miles away and it looked like it was just down the street. Is def something to see if you have the chance.
I saw the launch in July 2005 from Cocoa Beach and I loved it (I am a science nerd). THis was fantastic to be able to see a night one. Thanks for sharing this video!!!
Amazing!! I have been to Orlando twice and was very lucky and saw the shuttle go up in 1999. What an amazing experience it was!! That video was incredible.
OM freaking G, that is some damn awesome.
