@mmp3pets I wish my own mother had understood that better. If she had I probably wouldn't be saying my favorite episodes are the one where Eunice buys the self-help positive thinking tapes and even manages to build herself up to the point where she actually try's out for (and gets)a part at the local Raytown comm. theater. Only to have her family screw it up And the episode where Mama falls a sleep and talks to the ghost of her own mother and tells her off.
Sadly, my mother loved this show and thought it was a way to live life. But it's a tv sitcom and meant for entertainment type purposes only. She believed she was eunice but treated everybody like momma treated people. An old women that chose to waist her life away then blamed it on her poor family. I'll bet eunice would have a far better life if she'd been encouraged more. But I find these old shows more sad than funny. read "Toxic Parents" by Dr. Susan Forward & "The Birth Order book" by Leman
Thank you so much for posting this. I saw it originally MANY years ago, and have not been able to find it since then. Whenever I mention this episode to anyone, no one knows what I am talking about. Thank you for finding and posting this. This is truly a great gift.

Not sure why Craig Richard Nelson, who played the psychiatrist in episode 11.24 of Carol Burnett, was never given credit for that performance on the IMDB, but I recently submitted the request to the IMDB, and noticed that he now gets credit for that episode. Parts of this scene also appear on "The Carol Burnett Show: A Reunion" from 1993, which I thought was an excellent compilation of sketches from her show.
Robert4770, you're actually remembering right. If you do a youtube search of "Eunice Special, Part 1 of 9," you'll see it. Whoever posted it has it in 9 parts. Starts with Eunice very young and goes through years of her life till way later in life.
Am I remembering wrong or was there a TV movie made between the end of the Carol Burnette show and the start of Mamas Family? I think it had three parts and in the last one Mama dies.
Yes it was the Eunice Special. It's on You Tube. Look Under Tabsarkin.... thats the username... and its the Eunice TV special.... it's in 9 parts i think. You can do a search for Carol Burnett and find that user in case I didn't spell his name right.
The "Family" sketches should have ended with this one, instead of going on with the "Eunice" special andthe "Mama's Family" tv show. This sketch would have been the perfect ending.
cynthiacher Technically you COULD say it did. I think we have to look at the Family skits on the Carol Burnett Show and Mama's Family as taking place in 2 different universes. I don't think you can tie Mama's Family in to the continuity of the Family sketches.
Actually sometimes I think that the NBC version of MF isn't canon to the syndicated version, they are just TOO different.
I will say though the syndicated version of MF is more similar to the Family Sketches in that both versions usually dealt with ONE certain plot and were very centralized, where as the plots of the NBC episodes of MF were very thin and the shows relied more on the great acting ability of the actors.
Yes! I I've always said that Cellmates was basically a Family Sketch, dealing mostly with Ed, Eunice and Mama, Vint was thrown shortly. And another thing, in Mama's Family they made Eunice more into a villain and Mama more into the more likeable one, contrary to the way it was on the Family Sketches. On the Family Sketches, Eunice usually didn't explode until the end of the episode after she took all she could, but on MF it seems like Eunice has a chip on her shoulder from the beggining.
anyone know who the actor playing the psychiatrist in this sketch is?? i think he is great in this role on here??? can anyone help me out on this???? thanks....
Yaaaay!!! I've been waiting for 30 years to see this again! I did this skit in high school and it was great. I still had most of it memorized......Thanks!
ddoyle- I BARLEY remember seeing Eunice in that office when I was like 8 years old, so I'm thinking this skit was probably edited into a 30 Carol Burnett and Friends show.
i am so sick of everybodys negativity, it was a comic SKETCH the CHARACTERS were written this way, they are NOT real people!

Poor Eunice, she thought of everyone else first and due to her niceness she was treated like dirt and never got anything in return:(

I always felt bad for Eunice, sometimes she tries to be a helpful person and it blows up in her face.

you probably know by now, but it's called "Eunice" and it's on YouTube. It's very good. It aired in 1981 or '82.

I think the NBC version of "Mama's Family" was pretty close to the sketches. The syndicated version is a different story.

Well, I'll give you that I guess. But "Cellmates" and "Positive Thinking" could pass for Burnett sketches IMO! :)
