I'd imagine that a lot of the problems stem from, well, the kind of problems that stem from being a child. While a 16 year old may be able to enter into a marriage contract with parental consent they may still have to be the age of 18 to enter into other binding contracts, like land ownership or even getting the electric turned on.
Maybe the history of the law was just to secure common property interests? I'm off to find out.

@lesterclaypool1 Yes, I agree in the sense that it's unfair for someone to be 'promised' without their consent but just thought it interesting that they appear very strange compared to the culture I come from(urban/city dweller). I'd imagine that a lot of the problems stem from, well, the kind of problems that stem from being a child. While a 16 year old may be able to enter into a marriage contract with parental consent they may still have to be the age of 18 to enter into other binding contracts, like land ownership or even getting the electric turned on.
Maybe the history of the law was just to secure common property interests? I'm off to find out.
