  • Roger walked out of the Washington Bureau after they named Rather as anchor and never returned to CBS. The original offer was Rather to anchor from New York and Mudd to anchor from Washington. Dan was okay with the deal, but not Roger. Would have been a great team. Walter once said " When Roger subs for me, he forgets that news happens outside of Washington too."

  • I too remember watching Walter Cronkite. I also remember watching Roger Mudd substitute for him most of the time when he was away. Those were the days when watching the evening news was a daily ritual you never missed.

  • What a great newsman! I was born in 1969, but I well remember Walter on the CBS Evening News. A great American, and a life well lived. My prayers are with Walter. Surely, we'll never see the likes of him again.

  • i was stationed at edwards afb in the 60's & 70's. every time we experienced a flight tragedy (not a rarity), i remember calling my parents in new england to tell them to watch cronite to see the details.

one time a MOL astronaut was killed in a flight accident, i had the unfortunate duty of being c.q. for the 6510 hospital that day & directly aided in bringing his body back to the hospital. sure enough that evening my parents watched what i experienced. i'll never forget mr cronkite!
