Battle: LA demonstrated what a REAL military response to an alien invasion would be, while Independence Day is a popcorn, cartoonish action movie. I love them both, but they are really quite incomparable.

How and what did we screw up during the Cold War? It was the Soviets who came in and "liberated" us, and installed a puppet government against the people's will by holding false elections. Well I can't enjoy a movie trying to explain to me that an alien computer system of an advanced alien civilization would be prone to 20th century computer virus attack.
