Hi DeckGuy - great vidoe and very instructional. I have a cedar deck and shed which is in farily bad shape. Should I follow the same procedure you have used plkus sanding after the powerwash. Also do you recommend waprebased or oil based Wolman products.
This could really be a big problem. First, Wolman Wood Care Products does have a powerfull stripper that is called "ASR" Acrylic Stain Remover. In many situations this works very well. However, there are some occations nothing works. Like the deck we are currently finishing up. We had to completely take apart each and every board and sand off the "paint". Trust me this is not easy.
I have a deck to strip, but I think its going to be a major problem, when it was sealed last time they put a stain on it that was almost more like paint. its going to be hard to get off. what kind of stripper should I use?
love the wolman raincoat. that's what we use. the cedar really is the best one. we apply using the same kind of sprayer you used to apply the brightener. then we back brush using a broom, and usually cut about 6 inches to a foot from the house using a 4 inch brush. gotta love the wolman, raincoat. best sealer on the market. easiest to use, and being water based, best to clean up after. awsome job, man.
I'm getting ready to start a pressure washing and deck cleaning and refinishing company myself and would love advice from somebody who knows the ropes in the biz, as far as products to use, time saving techniques etc. I'm just a young entrepreneur trying to go to college and make a decent living at the same time any help would be greatly appreciated.
Wolman Wood Care Products are a totally new concept in Water Born Oils = Real High Tech stuff, using technology to help us keep on track even in those rainy seasons. Personally I like the look of oil. Having finished over 4000 decks using this new technology. 98% of these customers are completely satisfied. Different strokes for different folks. Oil does tend to track indoors leaving a path on the carpet. This product will last 4 years vertical and 2 years horizontal.
Nice job Deckguy....Water base products suck cause they let the wood dry out in the sun after only a few months.Non drying Oil base stains are the best type of stains for wood.
Nope - actually there wasn't any sanding required on this project - none
I have a few sanders that I do use on some cedar decks - as cedar does tend to feather and splinter after powerwashing - there is a fine line where your getting too close and damaging the wood and "exfoliating" those outer dead cells damaged by UV Rays.
with the water base product that I used on this deck - I can seal @ 50% moisture - another words - I can actually clean/power wash a deck in the morning and grab a bite for lunch and come right back and seal it! I call it "Deck in a Day" - Keep in mind that if you need to do some sanding (cedar decks) you might want to wait and let the wood "crisp-up" so sanding is done well.
finally someone who knows what there doin......house painter 20+ years here....lately i've seen alot of hacks staining and treating decks over mildew and grime and using pump up sprayers to apply. roll and brush is the only good way......and a clean sound surface is the key ! excellent job bro !
Your not seeing all of this project - there is another deck on the other side of this house - this project had just over 1000 square feet - my rate has stayed the same for over 10 years - One Dollar per sq. ft. (Thank you for your comment.) Phil
10 hours ... 4 hours cleaning - 6 hours minor sanding and application of finish - normally this would have been an 8 hour project I had to allow for video and other production tid-bits.
looks good mate!

Hey Deckguy, how long did you have to let the deck to dry before doing the sealing?
