I found this part of the show to be the most fascinating, especially with Tony having to square a KARMIC deal with a bunch of Tibetan monks. Also interesting is that in Tibetan Buddhism, this life is seen as being a temporary diversion from reality.
This is a beautiful song. And it fits the mood of the scene perfectly. We have Kevin Finnerty feeling very alone, and all the while Tony remains in his coma and at that point is showing no sign of coming out of it.
Just seeing Tony sitting there, staring at that spotlight, alone, afraid. So easy to connect with those feelings. So far from your loved ones, facing your deepest fears all by yourself.
This show was a great work of art. Many people still don't understand what this last season was about, though. It was about Tony's chance at redemption and reconciling his relationship with his family. There was a sign of hope when he awoke from his comma, but in the end he became worse than ever and his war with NY led to his death.
@baruavice I agree. The Vito story shouldn't have gone on so long. I think that Vito's story was supposed to parallel Tony's in a way. Vito had a chance to escape his criminal life but he couldn't resist the thrill of it. His attempt to return to his criminal lifestyle led to his death. Phil Leotardo's story also paralleled Tony's. Phil began to change after his heart attack but in the end he became worse than ever and it led to his death.
@bxjam85 Exactly. The recurrent theme of the sixth season was redemption , not just for Tony , but for a lot of these mobsters . A chance to fix the path that theyre lives are heading towards ( for tony his experience as Kevin Finnerty , Phils stroke , Vitos experience in New Hampshire) ... but like you said , the allure of "this thing of ours" casts too large a shadow for them to ever escape . Therein lies the whole tragedy.
"Just when I thought I was out .. they pull me back in" haha
@baruavice Also, don't forget Little Carmines talk with Tony about his dream of giving the empty box to his father for his birthday. Tony interprets this as meaning that Carmine Sr. would want his son to step up and be the boss of the family. When Little Carmine tells Tony that the dream wasn't about being boss, it was about being happy, you can see the envy on Tony's face. Little Carmine learned the lesson that Tony, Phil and Vito couldn't.
Man, season six of The Sopranos had such an awesome fucking start. The first four episodes were brilliant. Then it stretched the whole Vito being gay thing for far too long. But the first four episodes... wow... just wow...
Sometimes being alone is the only way to go. It's not for everyone but like all things, when you get used to something as being alone in different aspects you learn to cope with it your own way. Heavy scene this was.
this scene translated 'I can't talk to my crew, because I can't show weakness. I can't talk to my family because I cant involve them in this life.. I am on my own in this life'
There were two types of Sopranos viewers. People who just wanted to watch mobsters kill people, and people who liked these types of scenes. One guess which of the two still watches the show to this day.
people discussing the end of the sopranos show's how much this program meant to the viewers. all i can say is the sopranos is totally fucking years beyond any drama. god i miss it. :-(
Does anyone else feel like the show changed pitches about halfway to 2/3 through? It's like, in the beginning, the show is about how the Mafia operates and the power struggles of this one branch, with some psychology granted. In the latter part, though, it just turns into this devastating personal tragedy that shows how destructive evil ultimately is to the things that really matter - friendship, love, family, happiness, self-worth.
@CertifiedGooner729 It may seem weird to the uneducated fan. I'm not saying that as an insult, but literally every single frame and part of this scene has a definitive meaning. A few months back, someone gave great insight from everything to Tony taking off his shoes, the wound on his head, etc. This is probably the most powerful scene in the entire series.
I think we had our arguments in the past, but I would gladly help you understand this scene better if you'd like. Take care.
@fairfield101 Thanks bro. Thank you also for uploading this. Out of a huge category or possible choices, I really think this is the most well constructed scene in the series. Literally every frame is perfect, along with the combined music from Moby. This scene, along with the rest of the series, is truly a masterpiece.
@JohnGolbunny It's all good, man. I don't take anything to the heart on youtube. We all just love to kick each other in the nuts on here. Explain away...I love hearing other fan's opinions about shit.
As of now the only show I think that competes with The Sopranos in terms of quality of writing and acting is Sons of Anarchy. It is like The Sopranos but with a motorcycle gang. Great show and I recommend it to all!
him hanging up the phone symbolizes that in the end he has no one to turn when things get bad and he's really alone in life. He can't turn to "the guys" because he's the boss and has to maintain his image - he can't turn to his family because they can never know about his other life. He's this power guy yet he's completely alone.
@VanillaShoelace Yes, and the only other person who could relate to him was Uncle Junior, who he went to for advice. But by that episode Junior had fallen deeper into senility, and was no longer had long spells of lucidity. He was truly alone.
Man, in the end, we really are alone. "Where were you when I was lonesome?" His wife and daughter are in close proximity in the conscious world but he's still in his dream state and wondering if it's all worth it.
@hugodrax71 It did raise the bar but not enough for me, I really thought the sopranos would give way to a host of new shows with the depth, intensity and excitement that this series produced but I'm still searching for its predecessor. God I miss it!
@fairfield101 Many people working now on Boardwalk Empire worked on The Sopranos. They make Boardwalk is the predecessor. Also, Tony gave way for the lead charcaters to be the villain of the show. For there would have been no Deadwood, nor Dexter, Weeds, Nurse Jackie, or Breaking Bad without Tony Soprano.
@fairfield101 I said Breaking Bad earlier, now i'm adding Game of Thrones (it takes a while to know the characters but it's worth it) just like The Wire.
The image of Tony, sat alone and fearful at the end of the bed, whilst the lighthouse flashes, searching, continually in the distance is one I'll never forget. For me, it is the defining moment of the series. The Sopranos went far beyond entertainment. It went far beyond it in its first season; it became more than 'just a show' on TV and became something exceptional, unprecedented: socially relevant, uncompromising, universally pertinent cinema
As you see in the scene, tony is in a coma and he is surrounded by those he loves,he hears them and feels their sadness. when hes in the hotel room he wants to pick up the phone to reach home and wake up but he feels its unreachable, so he hangs up. the light outside the window symbolizes life and the hospital room,he hears his family talk to him. he looks at the light outside the window in a discouraging way cus he wants to go home but he knows its not time to come out of his coma yet.
As someone mentioned earlier that " they don't understand the symbolism in this episode" is the way to tell that you are not a true fan and that you simply don't understand the underlying characters of tony. not to be harsh or anything. Any fan and person who can relate to a moment like this knows how amazing and touching this scene was in the sopranos. Personally, I cry when I watch this scene 'cause you really have to understand what he's going through.
Thanks for posting this Fairfield. I see this as one of the most important endings in the whole show. So much symbolism and a lot of meanings that I can't even get my head round. But that's what I like about the Sopranos. I can't get my head round all of it. I get the feeling though that this coma was Tony's chance to change or get out and this scene is hinting at that. Can't be sure though.
I have never been moved by a work of art as much as I have by the Sopranos, and especially this scene. Tony must confront wether he wants to continue his life or if his stress and burdens are just too much. He hangs up the phone and sees the flashing beacon and is in consternation about his destiny. It would be impossible to improve upon this amazing masterpiece. The Sopranos, and scenes like this, are truley works of incredible art equivalent to any Shakespeare or Picasso.
its amazing how the show changed over the seasons...it went from being a scorsese flick essentially, to something much more......creative...with more feeling...towards the end of the series
Actually, I would go as far as to say this is one of the best and deepest episodes of any TV show I have ever seen with one of the best endings, if not the best.
To see or hear a telephone in your dream, signifies a message from your unconscious or some sort of telepathic communication. You may be forced to confront issues which you have been avoiding. Alternatively, the telephone represents your communication and relationship with others. If there is no dial tone or the phone is left off the hook, then the dream indicates that you are shutting yourself out. You are experiencing difficulties in getting your thoughts and feelings across.
In general, shoes represent your approach to life. Wearing shoes in your dream, suggests that you are well-grounded or down to earth. It also represents your convictions about your beliefs. If you are changing your shoes, then it refers to your changing roles.
To see a hotel in your dream, signifies a new state of mind or a shift in personal identity. You are undergoing some sort of transition and need to move away from your old habits and old way of thinking. You need to temporarily escape from your daily life.Alternatively, the dream may imply a loss in your personal identity.
I like how when he looks at the beacon 1:44 he looks a little angry. Almost like a defensive denial angry. It really says a lot. I get the feeling like Tony's Sub conscious know what that is and is afraid to be "judged" so to speak and instead expresses a quick frown. Or maybe deep down he understands what happening to him and he's upset with god for trapping him in a never ending purgatory.
@runarmyof1 one of the few to get it right. tony as kevin finnerty is in purgatory. the beacon of light is not 'home' for tony as many of these comments have stated, rather its heaven. in this episode, kevin finnerty was explicitly told that the beacon of light was occurring north of the city, and that to the south (on the news at the hotel bar), forest fires were raging, symbolizing hell. the coma was ultimately a point of transition for tony.
@buzzNact I was actually just thinking I could have seen this being the final scene. For me, it would have had more an emotional impact. And by the way you referred to the actual ending, I take it I'm not alone in how I feel about that.
This scene just makes me think, "Fuck, no show will ever be as good as The Sopranos." Tony's expression/body language just conveys sadness, depression, loneliness, fear, and yes, love. Forget the mob stuff...this scene just shows a scared husband and father who really, really wants to go home.

@LibPornQuig So true, I always try to tell people this (who don't like/didn't watch the show) when they say it's all about killing etc, everything you said is what the heart of The Sopranos is about, it's perfect art because it does it so well, in a simple, and beautiful way...Perfect.
what a great ending - so much meaning to the song and its use -- the sopranos always use the right song to end an episode and leaves a hollow feeling inside when this episode ends ---
Not to sound crazy, but I actually can't find the appropriate words to sum this show up, so I won't even try to begin. As 0sandOnes stated above, there will never be another show like this again. There is just something about it that can truly change a person. Utter brilliance.
@Markoferrari88 there is a show like this its called Dexter i was a huge Sopranos fan never thought anything else could add up to it but oh man was i wrong watch Dexter in its entirety i cant wait for the 5th season
I thought the lighthouse was meant to signify heaven..there's a large fire on the other side of the city (hell) and Tony is here stuck in between the two, effectively in limbo. The coma episodes were to me about an offer of redemption which he ultimately ignored when he woke up and turned increasingly brutal until the end of the final series. Whatever your interpretation though, great episode from a perfect TV show. I wish Sopranos never had to end!
wtf are you talking about, the ending was AMAZING, sopranos doesn't need to follow all the other bullshit show by making it into a fucking movie, the best shows had their finales on tv, they dont need to suck their own dicks
@essexmonkey i totally agree with that he definitely ignored the redemption everyone would have been better off if tony had died sadly cuz look at how everything ended up Silvio in a coma, Bobby dead, and Christopher dead
Man season 6 especially had a lot of great endings. Sopranos home videos, stage 5, Kennedy and Heidi, the second coming, the blue comet. And this being probably the best. Bravo
I've been looking for this one for a while. Anyone know the name of the song? I remember seeing this episode a few years ago and being strangely moved by the music and the lighthouse in the distance.
That light comes from the heart monitoring machine outside of Tony's coma. The way Chase takes bits of the 'real' world and incorporates it into the 'subconscious' world reminds me of Lynch's Mulholland Drive.
Also, it brings up the message that money can't buy love. As Tony sits in his suite on the highest level of a fancy hotel.
As he looks off into the distance ans see's a light, reminding him either not to give up his life, or a spiritual reference is being made saying God is there for him whenever he needs him or a light to a new path of life after the one he is currently in.
This may be the best and most analytical endings to an episode. It's one of the episodes that reflects upon the whole series and tests the audience on whether they understand the meaning of the show. It's not about the mafia and how they run things, we all know what they do. It's about how much stress Tony must carry on and trying his best to make everyone in his life the happiest they can be. The music and lyrics of the song is savvy upon it, really gives the whole package. Listen with intent.
@CorruptBox Very well said. I'd LOVE to talk Sopranos with you some time.....I feel like there's an elite level of Sopranos fan that understands and can see exactly what you are saying. Please feel free to message me any time.
This may be the best and most analytical endings to an episode. It's one of the episodes that reflects upon the whole series and tests the audience on whether they understand the meaning of the show - reallllyyy, please, dont fool your self..its not greek mythology, whats there to really understand?!i dont think you understand the show
Being in an isolated hotel room high above everything while going through a depressing time can be a very surreal experience.Especially at night looking out the window watching the lights flicker in the distance from street light, cars, etc. For some reason I feel more strongly watching this scene than any other scene in television history. The light blink in the distance that Tony sees is a sign that we are never really alone.someone is always with us whether it be in the real world or afterlife.
This scene really gets to me. Not to be melodramtic but I think most people have at least one moment like this in their life. Where they wonder what could of happened or if they should of been something else.
My impression of the Sopranos was that a lot of the characters, Tony especially should and could of led a different life. Happier as a simple farmer. This shows in Chris too with reguards to his writing. Not to say their 'thing' facets wouldn't be there, just buried and locked down.
I've been looking for this scene since this episode aired....great work Fairfield. My all time favorite ending and Chase couldn't have picked a better song to fit the scene. Bravo~
its tony not knowing who he is , or where he is, he's lost, like when he comes out of the coma he says to the nurse " I havent been feeling myself..my thoughts keep running away from me " they've always put a focus on dreams and thought in the sopranos, at least to me i think that what happens in the coma is his dream like state and his subconcious, the monks play a big role, and especially the bell lab scientist talking about schrodingers equation and " everything being everything" its true lol
I have to disagree with onlythequestion I think the episode is more about the real Tony and the Tony that would have been had he not been in the Mafia... The salesman he always said he would be if not in the mob... The fall down the stairs and being told their are dark spots on the brain which in turn will obscure his ability to see his affect on others, being told new treatments are coming in shows he has a chance to change which we knew he would not. The episode is the start of the end...
I found this part of the show to be the most fascinating, especially with Tony having to square a KARMIC deal with a bunch of Tibetan monks. Also interesting is that in Tibetan Buddhism, this life is seen as being a temporary diversion from reality.

This by far is the best episode of The Sopranos.

what does the lighthouse sun represent, his heart rate meter?
williamrafe1 1 year ago
@williamrafe1 i think yes
alkorkon2007 1 year ago
@williamrafe1 The lighthouse represents death and Tony's eventual demise. Watch his expression when he looks at it in this scene. Breath taking.

NateZen 1 year ago
In general, shoes represent your approach to life. Wearing shoes in your dream, suggests that you are well-grounded or down to earth. It also represents your convictions about your beliefs. If you are changing your shoes, then it refers to your changing roles.
NateZen 1 year ago
To see a hotel in your dream, signifies a new state of mind or a shift in personal identity. You are undergoing some sort of transition and need to move away from your old habits and old way of thinking. You need to temporarily escape from your daily life.Alternatively, the dream may imply a loss in your personal identity.

This was a brilliant ending. Tony calls for help but then gives up and looks over at the afterlife waiting for him...

So much emotion. One of the best things about the sopranos is the endings of the episodes.

I like how when he looks at the beacon 1:44 he looks a little angry. Almost like a defensive denial angry. It really says a lot. I get the feeling like Tony's Sub conscious know what that is and is afraid to be "judged" so to speak and instead expresses a quick frown. Or maybe deep down he understands what happening to him and he's upset with god for trapping him in a never ending purgatory.
runarmyof1 1 year ago
@runarmyof1 one of the few to get it right. tony as kevin finnerty is in purgatory. the beacon of light is not 'home' for tony as many of these comments have stated, rather its heaven. in this episode, kevin finnerty was explicitly told that the beacon of light was occurring north of the city, and that to the south (on the news at the hotel bar), forest fires were raging, symbolizing hell. the coma was ultimately a point of transition for tony.

Who thinks that this should have been the ending to the series, rather than just that bullshit cut to to black?
buzzNact 1 year ago
@buzzNact Hahaha....The cut to black was just as epic as this. But this is extra beautiful
NateZen 1 year ago
@buzzNact I was actually just thinking I could have seen this being the final scene. For me, it would have had more an emotional impact. And by the way you referred to the actual ending, I take it I'm not alone in how I feel about that.

This scene just makes me think, "Fuck, no show will ever be as good as The Sopranos." Tony's expression/body language just conveys sadness, depression, loneliness, fear, and yes, love. Forget the mob stuff...this scene just shows a scared husband and father who really, really wants to go home.

@LibPornQuig So true, I always try to tell people this (who don't like/didn't watch the show) when they say it's all about killing etc, everything you said is what the heart of The Sopranos is about, it's perfect art because it does it so well, in a simple, and beautiful way...Perfect.

what a great ending - so much meaning to the song and its use -- the sopranos always use the right song to end an episode and leaves a hollow feeling inside when this episode ends ---
alilondonmet 1 year ago
A really great scene. There's something about it that makes you feel Tony's pain and confusion. I love this show so much.
levramcd 1 year ago
Not to sound crazy, but I actually can't find the appropriate words to sum this show up, so I won't even try to begin. As 0sandOnes stated above, there will never be another show like this again. There is just something about it that can truly change a person. Utter brilliance.

@Markoferrari88 there is a show like this its called Dexter i was a huge Sopranos fan never thought anything else could add up to it but oh man was i wrong watch Dexter in its entirety i cant wait for the 5th season
delltardboy 1 year ago
I thought the lighthouse was meant to signify heaven..there's a large fire on the other side of the city (hell) and Tony is here stuck in between the two, effectively in limbo. The coma episodes were to me about an offer of redemption which he ultimately ignored when he woke up and turned increasingly brutal until the end of the final series. Whatever your interpretation though, great episode from a perfect TV show. I wish Sopranos never had to end!

@essexmonkey ya well hopefully they make a movie and truly conclude it

wtf are you talking about, the ending was AMAZING, sopranos doesn't need to follow all the other bullshit show by making it into a fucking movie, the best shows had their finales on tv, they dont need to suck their own dicks

@essexmonkey i totally agree with that he definitely ignored the redemption everyone would have been better off if tony had died sadly cuz look at how everything ended up Silvio in a coma, Bobby dead, and Christopher dead

Maybe it's obvious to some, I think the light Tony's looking at is coming from a landing strip at Newark Liberty International.
tonestar100 2 years ago
nope, if you watch that ep where carmella is in paris she sees that same light.

What - you never flew into Newark before?

I don't fly for fear of men with box cutters xD
strutnoodle 2 years ago
That light comes from the heart monitoring machine outside of Tony's coma. The way Chase takes bits of the 'real' world and incorporates it into the 'subconscious' world reminds me of Lynch's Mulholland Drive.

so true
alkorkon2007 2 years ago

CorruptBox 2 years ago 30
@CorruptBox Very well said. I'd LOVE to talk Sopranos with you some time.....I feel like there's an elite level of Sopranos fan that understands and can see exactly what you are saying. Please feel free to message me any time.

T00binitNY 2 years ago 2
That was deep, i dont even watch sopranas but this scene was.. wow
mimi2699 2 years ago 3
The Sopranos was brilliant. There was so much symbolism in this episode that you catch after repeat viewing.
Tony not calling his family as in he's "giving up". The light house representing the after life waiting for him.
Damn, I miss this show!

This ending really shows the tragic side of Tony.
s0olid 2 years ago 4
its tony not knowing who he is , or where he is, he's lost, like when he comes out of the coma he says to the nurse " I havent been feeling myself..my thoughts keep running away from me " they've always put a focus on dreams and thought in the sopranos, at least to me i think that what happens in the coma is his dream like state and his subconcious, the monks play a big role, and especially the bell lab scientist talking about schrodingers equation and " everything being everything" its true lol
caponex55 2 years ago 2
I have to disagree with onlythequestion I think the episode is more about the real Tony and the Tony that would have been had he not been in the Mafia... The salesman he always said he would be if not in the mob... The fall down the stairs and being told their are dark spots on the brain which in turn will obscure his ability to see his affect on others, being told new treatments are coming in shows he has a chance to change which we knew he would not. The episode is the start of the end...
