Thanks!!! It is a great conversation piece. I have had people follow me till I stop to ask questions. I have had people standing around it while parked in a parking lot as I come out of the store to ask questions. I have been sitting in stop and go traffic on I-75 and have people ask me questions as they pass by. Its a great car.
Great car. I am thinking of doing this with my 62. I have the original 40 horse (in perfect original running condition). I am sure I will have to convert to 12 volt. Can you tell me a ball park cost and where to begin my project? Web site? Thanks so much. Fantastic job.
WOW! A 62...Seems you would want to keep it original and find another vehicle to use but an electric 62 would be great. I searched around the web and finally went with Electric Vehicles of America. Not sure a web site that will walk you through the whole process but you can take a look at mine. I spent around $5000 for parts and accessorizes and $1350 for batteries. Good Luck !
I think that your car is amazing! Such a clean installation and wiring does not look like a rat's nest like some I've seen. Seems to ride nicely too. But I sure hope you stay off I-285 with that thing! Not enough speed.
very cool. i just can't get over the glowing generator light... now, if you wired the oil light to stay on all the time as well, that'd be epic. i mean, something /has/ to be wrong, right?
Yep...I was debating whether to disconnect the light or let it burn. I have driven almost 4000 miles and I pay so much attention to my volts, amps, and state of charge gages that I dont even notice the generator light anymore. But if I did illuminate the oil light I could have a red and green light. Christmas all year long.
I would try to have the green one light up when the charger is still plugged in and charging so you do not drive off with it plugged in to the wall socket. The red one could come on when you have used 25% of your pack charge.
This would let you know to start thinking about charging and roughly how far you have until 50% DOD (Depth of discharge).
Great idea SirTragain and that is something I could add in the future. Right now my EV bug is a commuter. I drive 25 miles to work, plug it in work 8 hours, drive 25 miles home, plug it in sleep 8 hours, and do it all over again.
Thanks...Im waiting for the lithium batteries to come down in price. Changing to lithium will reduce weight and increase speed and mileage. A 120 volt lithium battery pack is around 4 times the cost of the lead acid batteries.
im sure you've thought about this, but is there a way you could fix a generator or alternator to an axel or one of the wheels so it charges while you drive?
Yep...it is a Super Beetle with front struts. The only suspension mod was adding air shocks to the rear. With the 9 batteries in the back seat the little bug did squat a bit.
Really a nice conversion. I hope my VoltsRabbit Cabriolet turns out as nice (my goal is to have it rolling in April). What brand is your charger and where did you find your LED voltmeter?
Thanks! Good luck with your VoltsRabbit. I use the 96 Volt "Quick" Charger. I purchased the panel meter from Circuit Specialists in Mesa AZ. The meter was around $12 and you have to have an "add on" board$5. Add shipping charges and it was about $27. You can get a resister to take the 12V down to 9V but I got the 9V battery version. I have a 9V recharger and (2) 9V rechargeable batteries. Each battery last about 3 hours before I have to recharge them. If I did it again I'd get the resistor.
What are the 4 gauges you added? I could tell the gauge on the left is Volts, but what are the other two analog gauges monitoring, and what is the red LED gauge below the three analog gauges monitoring?
Ahhhh.... I just found your "conversion details 2" post. So the other two round gauges are "state of charge" and "amps" (makes sense)... but what is the red LED gauge under the other gauges for? Thanks for posting all these videos by the way!
Oh boy... I really need to hold off on posting comments before I view all of your videos! I just found your video about the digital multimeter! So I guess I have no more questions! :)

Don't Look Back - strange how that worked out. Must be a sign...Regen Braking? I wish. Nope, I was catching up to traffic so I had to take my foot off the accelerator. When you do this it allows the batteries to rest and when they rest they build themselves up a little.
In the summer time I get about 26 to 28 miles per charge when I drive 60 mph and I have gotten as much as 32 miles per charge when I drive 45 to 50 mph. Now that it is winter I only get about 18 miles per charge. The cold really takes the life out of the batteries.
Man... "driving" re-invented...
Great !

Keep the 6 volt system and use golf cart batteries; you can then tap in to one for you aux. power.

Worth looking into thanks.

Should have kept the music off so we can hear the engine's "noise".

Ha Ha! Maybe I should do another video?

Thank You!!! Yep, I-75 is scary enough, Im not even thinking about getting on I-285. Thanks again.

If you do have a question that any of the videos don't answer just ask. I'm glad to help if I can.
Thanks for the post : )
