This was an amazing scene in the genre. Indeed, the movie made these the two principle characters. I'm a guy and a lot of my male friends weren't too wild about the film. Perhaps they were hoping that Chow's character would be more aggressive or get more screen time. And some of my female friends were surprised at the depth of the female characters. A different sort of "chick flick"? Maybe. It isn't cutesy, dainty, or syrupy. Instead, it rocks! 2 Thumbs Up!!!
@melotone : that what we call "practicing equality" my friend. not like in hollywood. generally, they speak of "equality" in movies, but they still portray women as the weak and only good when they have their legs up in the air!
Green Destiny: It's an extremely strong and sharp sword. It cuts other weapons - be they made of more ordinary metals or wood - like a knife cuts through butter. But it doesn't have any magic power and it's no different from, or better than, other weapons when touched elsewhere other than on its cutting edge. This is why in the film's second fight between Yu Shu Lien and Jen, Shu Lien was trying to expressly hit it on its flatter - and blunter - sides.
Michelle Yeoh could have so easily brought the little brat down she is such a baddass but of course the little brat has the magical sword that can never be broken and gives her special powers so things are complicated a bit. but also of course Yeoh loves the little brat and cares about her even though i personally hateeee that ungrateful younger character she is sooo selfish and hurts her friends gets them killed. bitch. haha still great movie and i understand the choices of both of the girls.
This scene really distiller the young girl's conflicts, and Michelle's capacity for empathy, and fidelity to the notion that the young girl could be saved from her misguided path. Notice how little dialog there is, the facial expressions, and the human scale of the action (very little gratuitous wire work). These wwomen ere the two strongest characters on the film and this was the flat-out best dramatic scene.
This was the one scene in the movie that blew me away. On the big screne it is very impactful. The wire work is not making a "fantasy" statement. And the one momement of comic relief, Michelle staggering backwards due to the weight of that massive mace, is both breif and a reminder to the audience that these women are human.
It's good how they used their dancing skills in Martial arts film

it's called sword finger and is used in wushu. Whenever you're using a straight sword weapon, the other hand is always in sword finger.

i think its just an alighnment thing. so you know your distance and it keeps your focus on whats infront of you using the fingers to focus past.
rough guess :P i doubt its just for show.

Anyone know what's up with the two fingers thing? I've seen so many people do it but i never know why....seems kinda pointless

@ThnkHppyThghts
"hand sword" using the 2 fingers pointed to balance the "qi"
as a means to balance the overall flow of "qi"
on one hand the "qi" would be channeled into the sword itself
on the other hand the "qi" would be channeled into the 2 fingers
it would be bad for health to solely relying on one hand
since it causes inequality of energy flow within the body

@sometaaw But then wouldn't that mean that EVERYBODY should do it? So far, I've only seen her do it.. :S
