This was one of the things that made me not like Tony Soprano. Sure, he played a good father to his kids, but he was a lousy husband and treated Bobby like shit. Bobby was nothing but nice to Tony and I'm glad that he got to whip Tony's ass once in the series before he was taken out.
Very tragic but such is life. David Chase was being as real as it gets when he did this show. Life don't always have a happy ending and the Sopranos makes it perfectly clear that bad things can indeed happen to the best people (whether it's being bullied by people like Tony or being killed); or in Bobby's case "better" because he was in the mob, so that makes him somewhat bad. And bad things can also happen to the worst people. Bad or good, everybody must die one way or another
It's particularly amusing to go back and watch Tony bust guys balls for being fat given his own fat fuckness as the series goes on.
