Understand that during the time period the theory of plate tectonics was not widespread. One going theory as to what caused lake valleys and pushed up mountains was a repeated flood theory. To make this agree with the bible Russell depends the last flood as that of Noah. Current science teaches no global flood occured during the time Noah was said to live, and teaches plate tectonics.
