As always, you are doing a very fine job of explaining both Nikon Settings and ways in which to take various photos. Keep up the very fine work young man.
3:51 he say meter a white rock ahhhhhhhhhhhh this is so wrong like much of this video the shot he say is over exposed is not he not even look at the histogram this how not to teach
So, how do you actually meter an area? I know you'd probably use the center-weighted or spot metering, but say you wanted to meter just for a white dress, like a bride's dress; how would you meter for it?
So, how do you actually meter an area? I know you'd probably use the center-weighted or spot metering, but say you wanted to meter just for a white dress, like a bride's dress; how would you meter for it?
im not very clear about something in the metering mode... the spot metering, depends on the point of focus being used?? or just in the center of the viewfinder?? does this work the same way for the centered metering?
@QQQQcon Is the point of being on different metering modes on manual only to see the camera's light meter reading and to adjust your shutter, aperture, iso accordingly until you get what the camera thinks is the correct exposure?
Would you use the spot metering if you were trying to get some nice bokeh? Also, I have the same camera and have been really struggling to reproduce some sunset photos that I have seen on Flicker that show very nice blues and amazing reds. Some say they have long exposure (30 seconds), yet nothing appears to be over exposed. Even at f22 and at 15 seconds, everything I have taken so far is very over exposed. I am using the Nikkor 17-55 F2.8 lens. Any suggestions? Thanks!
i do have aquestion...i would like to buy a much older lens,a nikkor 50mm 1.2,will it meter correctly for me in auto mode,on a nikon d5000?anyways,i dony know if that would be such a problem ,beaucase i mostly shoot on manual mode.but will it meter correctly?please answer
@MrOvidiurogalski I have used this chart in the past while searching for lenses for my d300. Thankfully my 2.8 200 mm was on this chart and I practically stole it off Ebay. do a google serch on nikon lens compatability and you will find a page on nikonians website that has a chart.
awsome review!!!!! I am a student in the area of photography, and now that I got ISO,Shutter, and F speed/apature down metering was my next step!!! PS. I love the D300. I am working with a 90 and I am praying for a 300 LOL
Very nice job. I think if you took a little more time and improved your lighting and video qualities you could make training DVD's people would buy., Cheers
Why does everyone talk shit about what he said and what he uses?...He described the modes fine and that's all anyone watching this video is looking for. Good video
Great video! I just bought nikon d300s. My first camera. Looking foward to your other videos. Let me know of any good books, and DVDs, on nikon camera d300s. thanks. Jesse
hi, i just bought a nikon D300s and was actually struggling to use it, but after seeing your video - i can say that its been very helpful. I think you should make a DVD of your training.
By the way which lense would you suggest for an all round photography?
that is important for landscape photography especially when it comes to film, but I find it a waste of time with digital, it is much quicker to use full metering, also this review is not for landscape photography but all forms of digital photography and it is for beginners. Just because I don't do something your way or any other persons way doesn't mean I have a lot to learn. What matters is what works for me not what works for others.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
so what you mean is... this tutorial actually telling that its work for you? that mean... the tutorial is for people has same idea like you... who has view of thinking just like you... .. so it's not for all beginners....... hmmm....
no, I made this review to help people who dont know where to start when it comes to metering. If you dont agree that is fine, I just want to let people know what works for me in the hopes that it will work for them too. And anyway this review is more about the function of metering not what just works for me.
don't waste your time with kids like this. they're just here to troll and start trouble. his favorite videos are about music and piano and things. there is nothing about photography. you're tutorials are fine and i wouldn't necessarily call myself a beginner but i'm certainly no where near as skilled as someone like yourself. just keep doing what you're doing and don't waste your time with people like this.
@QQQQcon Matrix metering works 99% of the time for 99% of photographers. I am not sure why anyone would think this is a "works for you" post.. your videos are a huge help keep posting and informing us!!!!!!
@QQQQcon I have a question... if one were to use spot metering on an area that is very bright would the rest of the picture come out dark since the meter is set to that one bright area??? I will practice with this but I was concerned with that.. oh just so you know I do not do landscape photography as of yet. My focus is on fashion/portrait as of right now... sorry if i sound stupid, but I am self learning and I have only been shooting for about a year.
as very informative. I've a D300 and always wondered if I was missing out on something by not changing the settings, but having seen your vid, it's enlightened me a lot & like yourself, for now I will stick with using the average spot metering.
@amazingmoose69 I tend to use spot metering if \i want the subject of the picture to be perfectly exposed. Depending on where your subject is, say against a brighter background, you will find that average metering will underexpose your subject. If you want to expose the subject correctly, turn to spot and you will find it will make a big difference. Don't forget to change back to average once you have finished though.
RE: spot metering. If I move the focus point around, will it meter the area the focus point is on? Or does it always pick the center of the image area? Thanks for your help!
Yes like usual these functions are to help us make great pictures. Meaning also that we have to understand what they do even if they are half/automatic
Thank you!

Does metering matter if you shoot in manual? It seems to not me anything if you're just gonna do everything by eye.
MobiusCoin 9 months ago
@MobiusCoin the metering still is useful in manual, you can estimate your exposure with the metering

Nice video... I use spot metering a fair bit myself to take pictures of birds in flight so that the sky does not cause the bird to be underexposed.
