Hearing some of these stories makes me really appreciate how lucky I am, I've been with my first - (and last) same sex partner for nearly fourteen years now and have never had my heart broken or been treated badly for a moment. Having to endure some gentle snoring occasionally which sounds more like purring is my greatest hardship :)
That woman's description of her 'butch femme' abusive relationship sounded horrendous, when Butches adopt the stereotypes of the worst man imagineable, (controlling, aggressive, violent, misogynistic etc.) it's a wonder that they ever have a relationship with any woman! Ugh. Ironically all of the butches I've ever known have been the softest, kindest, most considerate people - in complete contrast to their physical persona.
the relationships she's talking about? the stone butches and the femme girls. I dated a femme girl like that once, it only lasted a month, I just couldn't believe she didn't know her way around lady parts. Her girlfriends before me didn't want to be touched either.. I never realized that still happens.. so it's not really a 60s thing or old fashioned. I think it has to do with just how you view yourself..how you identify yourself.. but, a femme like that, wasn't for me! ;-)
She was absolutely right about the pain of losing a woman. No man has ever hurt me that way. I came out when I realized that I was hurting man after man. It's funny, but it seems that we are never more attractive then when we aren't really available. Go figure!
I took it to mean drugs/alcohol/& possible sex trade work. It often becomes the reality for addicted women. And lesbians being on the fringe of society ( by perception)in the 1st place - can make the leap .
i don't get why they like 'butches' ... they look like men

When the native woman talks about "street life", is she talking about prostitution? I'm not naive, I've just never heard such coded language.
