These guys should have all caught a plane to Palm Island a few years ago when Cameron "Mulrunji" Doomadgee was killed.......... turned up sang this song, supported the mob on Palm Island..... got greater support from the entire country........ maybe Chris Hurley would now be in jail, instead of still being a copper.
So many people missing the point... it's a beautiful song with about a great story, written by geniuses and performed here by Australians with great passion and great skill.
Is lovely
So take your racist black/singer white singer bullshit elsewhere, your ruining the magic
bugger me dead, trade unions, what do you stand for ? ,really i give you 5 min to think ..........he was fighting for equel pay so what the you talking about and his land @MrRobbd07 you need to pull your head out the shit bucket ,u got a brain of a 1/2 yr old get real, and same time no white person has no right to sing that song, for fak sak they even use it on superanuation comercals bugger me dead, stephen evans ( kooma man )
Curious to wonder if Mr Rudd has perhaps said anything to the trade unions or another industry fund that is currently using this song on public tv? Just Perhaps?
@yandiggles black white? who gives a rats? beautiful music like this is universal!!! its the spirit within!!! someone could be purple with yellow polka dots and it will still be awesome! fuck mabo and fuck racism!!
We used this song as a primary source for the Wave Hill Walk Off (1966-1975). Its awesome and gives so much historical account :) (can be disputedm but i like it all the same).
I am a bit bias, but cant help compare this to Paul Kelly version. Missy is awesome, but this song is about trade union politics and needs a truth and honesty that i reckon Paul Kelly does without question. Butler is one cool MF, but not sure about this version and his 'style'. looks like alot of fun, wouldnt have been good to be there.
@MrRobbd07 I love Paul Kelly's version as well and I agree it's hard to beat his gut level honesty.. but I feel I must correct you. This song is about Aboriginal land rights. If the unions had a role in that, it's a good thing, but it's a song giving tribute to Aboriginal success.. not union success.
@MrRobbd07 - actually this song is about the Indigenous Australian struggle for land rights and reconciliation, not really anything to do with trade unions!
@cammieg , and many are still being treated one hundred times worse then any aboriginal yet they are some of the happiest people in the world thuink about what makes them happy, think about what makes a normal person happy and see what you can do for yourself before you start asking for shit just because you think you are worthy of it
@cammieg the jewish were also locked up, killed and gassed for being themselves also, do they still ask for things back. the black south africans were also locked up and killed for much the same thing, the native americans, many races across the world have been treated much worse
@dylnbxtr Jewish ARE asking for stuff back. Black South Africans ARE arising and taking their power/land back. Native Americans ARE claiming their land back. All these people that have been dispossed are not sitting back and enjoying their poverty being "happy". People with a romantic view that the "Poor" are "Happy" do it, to live in a state of guiltless ignorance and apathy.
Together we can make a better future for ALL Australians with recognition and sorrow for the past genocide.
@dylnbxtr the Jewish aren't asking for things? if anyone tries to put a leash on them to protect palestine they remind everyone of the holocaust (which is still an atrocity, but was a long time ago and should be respected but moved on from).
the best thing is that all you guys have no idea, i was taught about all of this from grade five onwards, i grew up listening to the problems that previouse generations caused and i am now paying the price, i now have to listen too how much of a dick my race is wen i have done nothing wrong, i have to give away my money for something that is not my fault,,,
i am not being racist, but isnt it i ronic that if we had a white club we would be racist, if we had a school just for white people we would be racist, but the aboriginals, have hospitals, schools clubs, bars, parties and even churches just for them hat whiteys can not enter, dnt knw bout u but i am a little annoyed about that!!
@dylnbxtr we have greek schools, catholic schools, jewish schools etc are you also upset about that? Are you also upset that we have a chapter of our history called the stolen generation? My grandmother was one of those and we didn't find out til after she died, she was too ashamed to say that she aboriginal, she told us she had pacific island heritage and thats why she was dark skinned, I am a little annoyed about that.
@dylnbxtr : No im not annoyed about that. What i am annoyed about is that naive, ignorant people such as yourself hold such views that hide under the saying "im not racist... but.." Do some research man, im pretty sure that having a history of inequality in every possible social aspect and still living with the ramifications from the atrocities that our WHITE people cause generations ago outweighs some petty indigenous specific venues. Fyuck. grow up.
@dylnbxtr Anyone that starts a comment with "i am not being racist, but..." is being racist.
I'm glad you made your comments on a song where some of our finest white artists are paying tribute to Aboriginal's winning a land rights battle. It shows your ignorance about the way so many white people DO care about the wrongdoings of our race... but then racists don't normally notice that sort of stuff, so I'm not surprised you missed it.
@dylnbxtr I am Aboriginal and I can understand where you are coming from, but all Australians need to understand the fight of my people. For hundreds of years we have been forced to assimilate into the 'White Australia'. We had our land 'Stolen', worked for nothing but flour and tea, were removed from our families and placed in reserves and missions, treated as refugees in our own country. Today however, we have the freedom and right to make a stand for ourselves and right those wrongs.
@maljetta1 about time someone actually looks at the truth and faces the fact that aborigines as yourself, not all but a large amount are trying too bludge off of centrelink, quit school, quit their trades, wuit any work they had and think that white people deserve too pay them back. Dont forget that white people came here as prisoners/ servents, we spent hundred years ouselves becoming equal, we as white people couldnt trust each other. Aboriginal people really do just need to be patient
@dylnbxtr Well the thing is, Aboriginal people are sick of being patient thats why we are making a stand for ourselves and building our own schools, 'hospitals' (as you said), churches, clubs etc, etc. The majority of Aboriginal people hold great jobs (many in government departments), Mining Industry, Trades etc, how on earth are we meant to move forward if we are going to have 'other' Australians trying to bring us down with comments like yours? I encourage you to befriend an Aboriginal person!
@maljetta1 i went out with an aboriginal girl for many years, i was best mates with one too, i knew both their family's very well too. that is where i am getting my facts from i knew them aswell as their extended family. that is why i refered too them dropping out of school quiting their jobs and becoming lazy doel bludgers, they expect the outer white community too pay them back for something we did to their great great grandparents. be patient stop expecting everything too be better now
@dylnbxtr The fact that you said ..'for something we did to their great great grandparents'.... assumes that you feel remorse for past wrongs against my people. Thats a good thing and shows that you really do care!! NOW CAN YOU GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE, JUST LIKE WE HAVE AND ARE.
@maljetta1 but that is the problem, from all the comments on here calling me racist and saying we deserve too give back, just shows that some people arnt moving on. it shows how many people believe some of the false things that are said. how can it be that africans with no food or water can be soo happy, how can it be that the homeless people in our cities can be happy, how can it be that there are so many people worse off that are soo happy with nothing, yet people are always asking for more ?
Dan Sultan said in an interview that: "The biggest issue of all is that if people really cared, it'd be taught in schools. You wouldn't have to Google it."
So true. Because of this song, more people know a little more. Inspiring stuff.
This is so many times I have shown this and just watched it while I am at home by myself. Vincent's story is Australia's Power and Pride. A local Band is going to post a video message soon.

Great songs are often the easiest to play. This is a four chord song; C, Am, Em, G.
Your right dennie, the story of this song should be taught at school and played around camp fires. It's a fantastic story.
