"if i dont get tyson im done" ii wishh it was true that wouldve been a great way to retire..from here on out makes me saddd damn royyyyy...its iight u still one of the best to lace gloves
This fighter has fought well and been a top contender/champion within a 50 pound or more bandwith. That is an incredible accomplishment that will be remembered in the history of boxing...
Great intro with Tarver coming out of the shadows. He was a sinister force in Jones' path, whom Jones should have fought earlier in his career and knock out.
Jones should have fought Tyson and called it a day. Tarver was the ultimate tangent that led to the unnecessary destruction of his career. Tarver is a jerk.
Man, I get so upset when I come down this road in discussing this fight. First, Tarver had been to at least 6-8 fights prior ( I always check to see who is in attendance and I spotted Tarver in each of them) when RJ decided to make the fight with Ruiz. Come on now, why not rant and rave then! I'll give Tarver the smarts to challenge RJ the way he did, but why didn't he rant & rave after the Woods fight. Child Please!
mannn when roy jones came down from the heavyweight division to face tarver, that's when his downfall started.. if he had taken on tarver before takin on ruiz, he would've destroyed tarver .. but nahhhhh he had to be greedy and impatient.. so he had to go for the heavyweight belt.. ah well.. one of the greatest boxers in history still..
@teck9troublesome actually no, he did it the correct way at this point. He went to heavyweight because tarver lost his shot at Jones. (tarver lost a fight leading up to the fight with jones) so jones went on to better things. When tarver earned the right eventually, jones faced him as promised.. (sticking to his word) and beat Tarver. THATS when he should of retired. After beating tarver here. he had nothing left to prove.
Mike Tyson is the only fighter where people would actually bet on which round he would knock his opponent out (usually 1st or 2nd) rather than who would win the fight. Mike Tyson never lost to his opponents, he only lost to himself, his lack of discipline once the fame and fortune started coming in. His first loss ever from Buster Douglas in Japan happened because he only trained for 2 weeks for that fight, and he had sex with just about every Japanese prostitute within those 2 weeks.
@Liffeygfc I don't know. I used to believe this same thing, but Calzaghe was a special guy. There has never been anyone with a motor like his. I'll give Roy credit and say that these first two fights against Tarver, his performance was less than stellar due to having to drop so much weight, but from the third Tarver fight forward, he's just lost his confidence, and it shows now.
That's the thing in boxing we never will know. I think Jones was past it just like you said, the KOs effected his confidence. Would have been great to see the fight about 3 years earlier but then Joe would not have risked it then; he would not leave Wales and only after Jeff Lacey did he really start to believe in himself and take the risks. Was sad watching RJJ no head movement, everything on the gloves being taunted by JC, sad just like his next fight will be against BHop

hmmmm.... am i the only one who thought Tarver won this fight? I dunno. Looked like Jones was trying to do an Ali impression with the rope-a-dope or something.
I really really wished, he would kept his word and retiring... after this fight... I mean he did it all.. a middlweight becoming a heeavyweight champ, the only man before him who was able to do that, was bob fitzsimmons in 1800 I dont know...
you're crazy dude. tyson had some amazing speed for his stalky build and some amazing head movement. he was one of the most evasive boxers of all time
I am crazy?!? Compared to Roy, he was like a sack of potatoes! Amazing speed?! You must be high on something! Only reason he could move fast enough was that he was small.
roy should have fought tarver before he fought ruiz he would have beaten him then convincingly then fought ruiz for the title and retired as one of the best there is!
That was a very close fight. I had it a draw..those last two rounds were the oines for Roy. Letterman's a goof and his cards are always weird..but i love both these guys
in a way this is one of roy's best performances due to the state he was in coming back down..he didnt even look like a LHW..he had no definition & at 34 u can tell his body was debilitated from the 20 lb muscle loss..tarver looked more ripped then roy n this fight..
"if i dont get tyson im done" ii wishh it was true that wouldve been a great way to retire..from here on out makes me saddd damn royyyyy...its iight u still one of the best to lace gloves

i mean, no one really remembers Ali for losing to Spinks or Berbick
i don't think Calzaghe will be famous in 5 years, and Tarver will be known as the guy who beat Jones
