Man, I get so upset when I come down this road in discussing this fight. First, Tarver had been to at least 6-8 fights prior ( I always check to see who is in attendance and I spotted Tarver in each of them) when RJ decided to make the fight with Ruiz. (tarver lost a fight leading up to the fight with jones) so jones went on to better things. When tarver earned the right eventually, jones faced him as promised.. (sticking to his word) and beat Tarver. THATS when he should of retired. After beating tarver here. he had nothing left to prove.

Mike Tyson is the only fighter where people would actually bet on which round he would knock his opponent out (usually 1st or 2nd) rather than who would win the fight. Mike Tyson never lost to his opponents, he only lost to himself, his lack of discipline once the fame and fortune started coming in. His first loss ever from Buster Douglas in Japan happened because he only trained for 2 weeks for that fight, and he had sex with just about every Japanese prostitute within those 2 weeks.

@Liffeygfc I don't know. I used to believe this same thing, but Calzaghe was a special guy. There has never been anyone with a motor like his. I'll give Roy credit and say that these first two fights against Tarver, his performance was less than stellar due to having to drop so much weight, but from the third Tarver fight forward, he's just lost his confidence, and it shows now.

That's the thing in boxing we never will know. I think Jones was past it just like you said, the KOs effected his confidence. Would have been great to see the fight about 3 years earlier but then Joe would not have risked it then; he would not leave Wales and only after Jeff Lacey did he really start to believe in himself and take the risks. Was sad watching RJJ no head movement, everything on the gloves being taunted by JC, sad just like his next fight will be against BHop
