Hey, that's me crashing! I moved left and sat up because the girl looked like a squirrel in traffic - I wasn't sure which way she was going to go. I was holding my line when another cyclist tried to merge into me. I leaned into him to avoid crashing right, and he pulled away so I crashed left. According to the two guys in the video you see standing near me at the end, "he totally cut you off". Who knows. Luckily no major damage, just a little road rash. I finished the race just fine.
Complete accident really. You have to be vigilant when its as busy as that - the roads are littered with tubs, tubes, bottles etc that have fallen off riders bikes. Looks like this is pretty close to the exit of T1 or are riders that bunched all the way around this course ?
The reason the guy crashed is because he swerved to miss a water botttle on the ground that the woman accidentally dropped off her bike, and then ran into the guy next to him. I know because I am in this video and passed the water bottle 2 seconds before the guy behind me crashed. Very unfortunate, and I am very thankful that the same thing didn't happen to me. Also very lucky that more people weren't involved in the crash.
Hi, thanks for the info. Yes, you're lucky and also luckily only one guy crashed. He managed to get back on his bike and we hope, despite that early shock, went on to finish the race. Hope you had a good race too.
I don't think the woman caused the crash. She wasn't in the rider's path. Unless it was a chain reaction. I can't tell if another rider avoided the woman and bumped into the guy who crashed. This was an IronMan compatition? The riders are on time-trial, road bikes, and urban bikes.
It was indeed a chain reaction. The moving bikes flow like water and when the woman tried to cut into the path of that stream she created a ripple effect. The first cyclists to see her would try moving left and that would cause others to do likewise. I think the cyclist who fell somehow clipped his front wheel on the back wheel of the cyclist in front as they all compressed leftward and he couldn't maintain balance.
I've seen some unlucky things happen in these races. When someone is inconsiderate to think that they aren't an inconvenience to others' races with their actions, they put lots of people at risk. She was probably a rookie and it was unfortunate that her lesson came at another's expense. However, everyone needs to keep their eyes peeled for danger, especially in town at the start and everyone's adrenaline is pumping--and at the end of the day when legs don't respond after 112miles of biking.
Yes, and the female cyclist left the road at 0.38 and after retrieving her stuff rejoined the race a 1.38. You can see her cycling off on the left of the video from 1.38 to1.46She's wearing a blue helmet. I'm sure she didn't mean to cause the crash but she should in any case apologise to the poor guy should she come across this video. Training for an Ironman is so intense that it's devastating to fall so hard off the bike so soon after the insane swim. Hope he continues without further mishap.
