@Ariel62073 I don't totally disagree with your statement but Randy Rhoads didn't really have enough time to develop into the player he would have been. Jake is amazing though.
Not Satch-You just can't touch that record-Nobody can-even the talented Mr. Lee (Not even Joe himself has duplicated that record-though he came close with a few of the immediately following CD's). That record had Joe's best playing and more than that-THE Sound. Everybody wanted that sound. From the crunch rythm gtr to the ripping solos-It was a breath of fresh air for us 70's guys who wanted heavy but listable tunes (yes, there was Ozzy) but who else? VH? Not a Sammy guy-Sorry.
I wish Jake would come back and do another instrumental album. I would love to hear him do a shred type album. Actually, at this point, for him to come back and do anything period would be nice.
at 4:01 you hear the alien switching of the jet engine of it's surfboard and landing. jake e. lee makes it sound like an alien surfing, it just perfect
I have nothing to say about the quality of Jake's playing, whether or not I like his interpretation of what is now a classic for the electric guitar or anything other than two things......
It must be very flattering to Joe Satriani to have a recognized and accomplished guitarist want to cover your material......and.......
Whoever mixed and produced this recording should stick to running karaoke night.....drums sound like an afterthought, rhythm guitar is unclear and the general balance sucks.
I heard it first time day before yesterday, and when I tuned my guitar ½ step down today and played Surfing With the Alien, I remembered this track and got it stuck on my mind :O
@rallyivan1234 Jake is a fighter pilot. That's for sure. But he doesn't shoot destruction. He make his guitar sing and scream in such a way as it gives me uncontrollable erection.
Sounds to me like they used those backing tracks that are so common these days and someone forget to check if Jake was in tune with tracks? It's an ok version. Zakk plays the "Bark At The Moon" solo really well but Jake wrote it!
pretty sick cover in my opinion. everybody's got a comment about him fucking it up but hey, its a tribute to satch man, he's obviously not going for an identical cover. and as for the out of tune thing, i like the guy who commented on alan holdsworth or john coltrane, good suggestion! i guess it's in the eye of the beholder, if you dont like it ive got great news for yeah, youtube has plenty of other videos for you to go watch! heh.
love satchs stuff,..love Jake.E.Lees stuff too but IMO i too think Jakes take on surfing was mental,..almost sounded like he was taking the piss...only my opinion so dont want anyone spittin teeth at me lolol
The amazing thing about this guitare solo is, that it really sounds as if somebody is surfing wildly through the sky. In this case an alien. etc: the end 3:59 you hear the alien landing. at 3:55 you hear the "turbines" of the board losing boost already. at 1:07 you hear the alien speed up, jeting wildly through the sky, sounds like chase or something. you hear the alien doing crazy moves. at 1:19 it reached it's to speed doing up and down moves like waves. at 1:30 you hear alien sounds. etc.....
Jake E. Lee is amazing , a guitar god but to record a cover of this song is BS , no one could possibly add something interesting or new ...Only Satch himself !!!
I dont know why people are saying this is so terrible. Jake has been around alot longer than Satch. And played on some of the most timeless, and amazing metal records of all time. There both incredible musicians. And if you listen to this version again you'll realize that its pretty fuckin sweet
Hey cazulu3 sorry but when have you ever seen zakk Wilde use a whammy bar? Alot of guitarists that are great use a whammy bar, but Jake lee makes it sound as if he's using one. Amazing guitarist!
Wow. I didn't know to Jake E. Lee overplay to that level. No doubt - he's a talented professional musician, but this borders on instrument and effects abuse. Is this really Jake? If so, WHY on earth would he do this? Nobody plays this like Satch, and nobody should try. Some things just shouldn't be redone, especially this song. It was perfect in its original form.
@governorgilf Exactly! Dude you are so right. If this isjake it still sounds crappy and isnt much of a tribute to anybody. Its horrible and sounds like shit.
If you read the description of the song, it is a version of Surfing With the Alien that was recorded by Jake E. Lee for a tribute album for Satriani and Vai.
???Jake E. Lee??? I have serious reservatons on that. Othwise I think it is a good and fun interpretation of a great song. good job. (Whoever! wink, wink)
It's a cover by an amazing guitarist.... if he played it exactly the same as joe satriani would you honestly listen to his version or just go to the original? hes putting his own style into it. guitar is about expression and hes playing the song the way he would if he wrote it.
possibly the worst I've ever heard Jake. So strange as he is such an excellent player, but not on this track. For gods sake he's not even in tune half the time
It's not a case of whether we could play as well as Jake. Personally I think Jake is a phenominal player...but CERTAINLY NOT ON THIS RECORDING. This is absolutely terrible. We applaude and heap praise on musicians for their great work......we are allowed to point out when they fall far short of our expectations also. This sounds like Jake rolled out of bed, opened the email attachment with the track, threw down this crap in one pass and sent it back before he had his first cup of coffee.
Some of you need to realize that you could never play like Jake E. Lee. I think this is great minus the solo. Which is pretty bad... Everything else pretty great :).
I don't usually like to leave negative comments....I just find something better to watch/listen to........but this is just freakin' horrible.
Was this another one of those Shrapnel label things, where Varney tries to get the last available dollars out of what was a great era of guitar music in the eighties.

Or even some of his enchanting BadLands material with the Late Ray Gilian, Jake by far has more talent then this closet cream puff and who should step up and claim this Crap? Be honest......
hhmm i like this verson, obviusly he play so dirty cause his style is from the streets, like slash, but is like more dirty and powerfull version, the other is so clean , but this is more agressive.
Is that really Jake E Lee on the track? Why does his tone suck so bad in this song? Sounds like it was recorded in someone's bedroom with shitty equipment.
ouch. he's basically just out of tune real bad. and yes, the backing track is weak. jake is an awesome shredder. this doesn't do him justice. wow. real badly out of tune. like a 1/4 pitch off. painful.
to be fair though...this is kinda crap considering how many people you hear covering this song, dont be offended, im not knocking him, but seriously...be real about it, this is like a guy playing half assed to a backing track, its all over the place
I like the tone better than Satriani's original anyways, maybe someone used the scratch take here LOL, raised the wrong fader LOL .Great Images though .
I love joe satriani and Jake E. Lee. One thing you have to remember is that jake doesn't use the tremolo bar on his guitars, so it's going to be different.
Anything is possible I suppose, he just always seemed like a perfectionist. I never thought we would here anything this sloppy from Jake. I'm sure he did the best with what he could at the time, who knows what the recording situation was...?
I like this version. I agree with personal feeling over someones interpretation of perfection. Who's idea of perfection should guide us anyway? Individual interpretation is best... it adds distinctive flavor.
I like it!!! Very angry and agressive! I can imagine, how Jake sticks his tongue out at Satriani, Vai and other shred guitarists! Just like this - ;-p
fucking amazing, you know why, jake makes it really sound like as if you were surfing with an alien, satrinani just blurred some tricks and blues runs, but jake really expresses the situation where you are surfing with the alien, even the ending where the alien is landing with his surf board
you know what, Jake is not afraid to play dirty on his guitar because he has got balls. I used to be keen on perfectional shredding in my own playing but realized that it's sounds dead without individuality. It's great to play some notes out of the harmony and now when to dotit
So very true, listening to clinical and correct i often very boring cause you know whats coming next. Guitarplaying is about expression and what your not playing(pausing and phrasing etc) is as important as what you do play.
If everyone's looking to hear the exact song then go buy joe's surfin with the alien album and quit whining and bitchin about someone else's version of the song. I'm sure jake's intention wasn't to play to exact song note for note off joe's album for you. In my opinion (and that's all this is) jake wanted to play some riffs and lead to a song and have fun with it so accept it and move on. Great job jake! P.S. I'm also a satriani fan and in my world there's room for both.
remember! this is jakes version of the song, its very different from the original but i fucking love it! its well heavy! its sorta like zakk wylde playing surfing with the alien!
jake e lee is an ausome player but this reeks bad. the beggining stunk and the end and everything in between, what the heck was the garbage that was suppose to be the main lead , dang dude get off the juice...please
Jake E. Lee is, and always will be, the best post-Hendrix rock guitarist
period
Music will have to change before someone tears it up with their intensity and imagination in the genre of rock n' roll.

yeah but sounds dirty mabe he was drunk
DeadSton3 2 years ago
Anything is possible I suppose, he just always seemed like a perfectionist. I never thought we would here anything this sloppy from Jake. I'm sure he did the best with what he could at the time, who knows what the recording situation was...?
yellowshirtguy 2 years ago
maybe, but his cover is terrible for a "tribute album"
DeadSton3 2 years ago
was he drunk when he recorded this or what?

Sounds like a POD

I like this version. I agree with personal feeling over someones interpretation of perfection. Who's idea of perfection should guide us anyway? Individual interpretation is best... it adds distinctive flavor.

Jake E Lee was one of ozzy's best guitarists next to Randy Rhoads. Jake is from West Virginia

I like it!!! Very angry and agressive! I can imagine, how Jake sticks his tongue out at Satriani, Vai and other shred guitarists! Just like this - ;-p
NikkiSaixx 3 years ago
yeah , this is much better !
Jakefan12 2 years ago
fucking amazing, you know why, jake makes it really sound like as if you were surfing with an alien, satrinani just blurred some tricks and blues runs, but jake really expresses the situation where you are surfing with the alien, even the ending where the alien is landing with his surf board
versierterXXL 3 years ago
Damn, you're fucking high.

you know what, Jake is not afraid to play dirty on his guitar because he has got balls. I used to be keen on perfectional shredding in my own playing but realized that it's sounds dead without individuality. It's great to play some notes out of the harmony and now when to dotit
versierterXXL 3 years ago 12
Sorry. But this version blows. Jake or not. Sloppy. Poor phrasing. Too bad dimebag is gone. Now he could've made a kickass remake of this.

@versierterXXL

P.S. I'm also a satriani fan and in my world there's room for both.

remember! this is jakes version of the song, its very different from the original but i fucking love it! its well heavy! its sorta like zakk wylde playing surfing with the alien!
reddracken 3 years ago
at least he tried, its not jakes place to be playing these type of songs, its like billy g playing in ozzy
creamydinkly 3 years ago
That comparison makes no sense because Jake DID play in Ozzy.

Satch should butcher one of Jake's solos, then put it on an album also called Karma.

1:07-1:15 would be the test to see how good he truly is. But he doesn't even come to close to it.
