It's SO kewl to re-see this at last! I saw it ONLY ONCE on MTV 25 years ago, watching MTV with another guy in my rock band of that age, and I loved it then, but never saw it again, until I finally tried YouTube! Thanks SO much for posting it, Tony, and listenening to your other songs shows alot of versatility. I'm going classical in my playing now. thanks for taking me back to the days of my double Bass Drum set :)
This song has been in my head for 25 years,,,,my dad had this video when I was 6 years old. "YES! YES I WOULD!" from Don't Nobody Move was a punch-line in our home for years....Thanks Tony.
Ok, three years since I've first heard this, and still my favorite song
What strikes me most however is the fact, that close to 30 years after the facet, the so called music genieus' of today ( green day, foo fighters, kanye, lady ga ga) couldn't write and arrange something this melodic and complex if there was a gun to their head. I feel sad for the generations who just don't have this
I salute you Mr. Powers for creating music of worth in a world of mostly disposable forgettable music. I discovered you from your work on the "Elder" album and like your version of Odyssey better, also think "Heist" is a work of genius. I will be buying your new c.d. and asking fellow you tubers to not download Mr. Powers music for free, this is an artist who deserves our support, buy it, an artist like this should be rewarded for his creativity. Thanks for your music Mr. Powers.
Thanx so much for your kind comment okltsply...and for purchasing the new CD. I think you'll enjoy it...perhaps you've alredy seen the vid of the first trk here on YT "How Do Ya"...anyway -- I certainly appreciate your discerning ears, and these sentiments. peace, tony
Mr.Powers, the new music sounds great. Can I ask a couple of things about kiss' the elder? Odyssey is the best song on that album. The albums other great song was also co-written by you. Could you tell us about the imput you had on "the oath"?. It seems without your imput,"the elder" would not have been near as good of an album.
Thanx for the props. I do appreciate it. As to "The Oath", it was so long ago that I really don't recall too much other than it was me who did most, or all, of the lyric. Not sure if I chipped in anything on the melody of that one. Again, I'm very gratified that u like "Odyssey"...and, most of all, especially glad u like my new stuff (if you're talkin' about the new CD WHO COULD IMAGINE. Thanks again, and happy, healthy 2009 and beyond. tony
10 months after I first heard Tony's version and it never gets old, only better. Mr. Powers, no matter what else you do in your career please remember that you have written someone's favorite song in the world.
Wonderful song, very romantic, makes you feel like holding hands and looking into the eyes of the one we love. Great work by all who put thier efforts into this video. You look so cool in this Mr.Powers as well.
Some songs has the ability to take you on a journey, bringing you along into another universe. Odyssey still has the power to do that. I am very grateful to Mr. Tony Powers that this song was written, and I absolutely love Kiss' version.
In case my comment didn't go through, and because I had more to say, Tony, are there plans to re-release the 1981 videos on DVD? Saw them first on NightFlight and they were instantly embedded in my mind. Ten years later, after searching with my then-limited resources, I found the VHS tape for rent. Lacking another source I ran off a copy, mea maxima culpa. Now I want to set things right AND give my wife a reason to learn to use the DVD player so she can play it over and over.
Great song... I *have* to admit tho.. nothing personal.. probably because I'm used to the other version - but I prefer the treatment KISS did on this. Not trying to be mean or anything. It's obvious you're a great songwriter given it's probably one of the best ballads KISS ever did.
By the way, Tony, I might add that "Odyssey" is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and it was great to FINALLY hear your version!! How anyone can come up with those chords I'll never know. I loved those other songs too that I found on YouTube. "Don't nobody move" actually reminded me of Peter Gabriel's "Intruder", musically.
I could ask a hundred questions about "Odyssey". You don't seem to have a website?
Toni, P.S. it occurs to me to tell you a few things about the Odyssey film shoot. As you can see, there was a terrible thunderstorm that night on the Staten Island Ferry--so we could only film for about 4 hrs. So I didn't have the footage I planned on having to edit with...hence those repeat shots and "moves"...which, in the end, really worked in pointing up the mysterious, mystical, feeling of the song. Lois Chiles was a real "pro" and a good sport thru what was a miserable, long nite. tony
Gene has said that he wanted to sing the song, but Paul sort "got the part". Paul Stanley doesn't seem to like what he did with the song. Here's what Paul has said (from KISS' "Behind the mask" book): "It was a good song when I heard Tony Powers, the guy who wrote it, sing it because it was unique. And it was very much suited to him. Me singing it was just tragic".
#anted to ask Mr. Powers, did Gene cut a version of this. True? After you recorded with them and heard the playback, did you suggest they use you synth solo you used?!
By the by,to the die hard Kiss Fan this is a classic. Very much akin to the Beatles When I'm 64 or Beach Boys Good Vibrations. Our favorite band taking a risk. Your video has made several sites in the past two weeks, with rave reviews. Lot of new Tony Power fans for sure!!
Lionel...thank you for the kind words. As far as I know the Kiss cover is the only one...if Gene did a version I don't know of it. I haven't heard the Kiss Odyssey in many years so if Ace, or someone else (I don't remember) did, in fact, play a solo similar to Chris Palmaro's original synth solo it was most likely not because I suggested it but because we all agreed it suited the song perfectly, I just played the same piano part that I
I don't really think KISS did much besides sprinkle a little Ezrin Dust on it. They really kept it very close to yours. Which says something for sure. This is the first time I've heard the original version. Very nice. "Music Produced By Tony Powers and Gene Cornish" - from the Rascals? Cool!
Yup...Ezrin added the American Symphony Orchestra to what was basically my original arrangement...if you'll check you'll see I played piano on the Kiss version. tony
I like the Kiss version better. Paul Stanley sung his heart out on this one and the guitar solo (dunno if Ace played it. Doubt it somehow) is better, too.
I`m a big KISS fan so of course I like their version too which sounds rather same. The singing is great, good voice and I like this video, it fits well to lyrics and feeling.
