The beauty of these comments demonstrates the ignorance, impatience and intolerance that many people have. There are lots of cameras out there on bikes, boys, time to wise up!
The reality is, as a bicyclist you are endangering not only your life, but others as well. I feel that most cyclists are selfish in believing that you have a "right" to be on a two lane 55mph highway. You should not, I think that laws need to be changed to limit the areas cyclists are allowed to ride or dedicate certain roads as "safely" passable by cyclists. All of your comments on here is just confirming what everyone else thinks. You want to ride in the middle of the road.
Never had a problem w/ cyclists till a few years back I was driving down a country road and came over a hill doing 60mph and had to slam on my brakes for about 7 of them all in the road! If I had been 10 seconds sooner I would have killed a lot of ppl. Then I'd have to live with it. Please stay off the roads! Yes you CAN but the roads are for cars. That's why some have bike lanes. Stick to them!
@Angrmngr exactly my point. my wife and i have this problem all the time! it's like they just never think "i just crested a hill" or "i'm coming into/out of a blind corner" and make the smart move to get to the side of the road "just in case"!
@666jet Shouldn't the motorist think, "I jut crested a hill, maybe I should make sure I don't kill someone". I know I do. As a cyclist, most blind corners will hide the cyclist even more if he or she is hugging the white line. To stay safe a cyclist should ride about 3' inside the lane, unless a bike lane exists.
i live on a mountain road in arizona with multiple blind corners, no passing lanes at all, and narrow driving lanes. it's a notoriously dangerous road and yet cyclists continue to ride here. the worst part is that they are usually way out in the lane and expect people to cross the double-yellow to pass them. well, no cyclists have died... yet. but my wife and i will probably spend the rest of our lives here and we expect cyclist deaths to come in the future...
@666jet Roads are for both bikes and motorists regardless of how narrow they are. If it's not safe to pass, a motorist may have to wait a few seconds until it is. As a motorist myself, I try to drive and be safe at the same time. Sometimes this requires a modicum of patience. Crossing a double yellow to pass a cyclist is legal when the conditions are safe.
@pgallas crossing a double yellow is NEVER legal. however, the police normally won't give you too much trouble for it if it seems necessary. i'm sure THAT'S what you meant to say. as far as sharing the road: the issue isn't just the blind corners or the narrow lanes. it's the combination of the two. in most cases i'll be coming around a blind corner there will be a vehicle crossed over the double yellow to pass cyclists. or, i'll come around and approach cyclists in the road and have to swerve.
@666jet idont know where u live but passing on a double yellow line is LEGAL look it up !!!! know what your are saying and riding more than single file is Not Legal look that up too
@odd2you no, dude. CROSSING a double yellow is not legal anywhere in arizona. maybe you should know what YOU'RE saying before you make your dumbass comments. i didn't come here for a comment fight with some troll, okay!
also, wtf?! i never said anything at all about riding single file. and i already know that riding side-by-side on a public road is illegal. maybe you should come here to arizona and tell all the cyclists that.
@pgallas sorry, ran out of room on the last comment. anyways, there are a lot of factors involved but the biggest problem is that many of the cyclists on my road will ride in the middle of the lane and won't make an effort to even get over. this is dangerous on a road like mine where cars, trucks, trucks with horse trailers, and buses are commonly going 40-45 mph. i guess you'd have to "see it to believe it". there are some roads where cyclists just shouldn't be allowed. it's just not worth it.
@666jet Cycling etiquette and safety have to go hand in hand. To be safe, a cyclist should not ride so far to the right that they are not a part of traffic. If you are too far to the right, badl things will happen. 1. You'll be run off the road. 2. You will be clipped by the mirror. 3. You'll get hit by the car. Riding in the road a bit (3') makes you more visible, encourages traffic from behind to slow down and pass with increased care, presents the cyclist as traffic and not "points"
@666jet Etiquette is as follows, ride to the right (3' from the line. When hearing a car approach and slow, move further to the right until the car passes. Also, the cyclist has a forward view and should wave the car to pass when all is clear. This can happen when the motorist isn't honking, yelling and reeving the engine.
@pgallas it seems to me that you're assuming that i'm one of those honking/yelling motorists. i'm not. i was just making a comment (originally) about the cyclists on the road i live on. whatever this "cyclist etiquette" is that you speak of, well... they don't follow it! that has been my point all along. one of these days there's gonna be a terrible accident and it's going to most likely be their own fault!
im surprised they got arrested for that. i remember riding a bike as a teenager and older kids in cars would always yell crap at me cause i didnt have a car yet. strange
Did anything happen to the driver and passenger? This has happened to me dozens of times in Arizona, we also have 3' law. It seemed like it would be hard to determine the passing space based on the video. Wouldn't they have to admit their intent to judge or cop, to get convicted on the yelling. Glad they got cited, as the voice does seem angry on the video.
2 laws broken. 1. the driver failed to provide a safe distance (min 3'). 2. Yelling with the intent to harass or intimidate is illegal. Why? Startling a cyclist off the road is dangerous / deadly.
