you save me $65 dollars. my throttle choke and idle control valve used to get clogged and left me stalled in the mornings too .during cold starts . my mechanic was charging to much . decided to do this on my own
Thanks for the post. It worked for me but I had to remove the bottom hose from the IAC and spray it out good. Maybe a 15 Minute job. Saved me time, and money.
Nice job. It's really not such a bad job to remove the throttle body so you can get to the IAC for disassembly and a thorough cleaning. But on car quick repair is defnitely worth a try as you have done. To one commenter who complained about the cleaner used - it is not necessary to used MAF cleaner for this because it is downstream from the MAF sensor.
I have the exact same problem on my 94 Camery Vienta V6. The Problem is when I take off the air filter and look near the throttle I cant see and opening for the IACV. Its just not there.
@rizegraymon1 - Same thing. I've got a combination of stalling when I turn on A/C (but not fan), stalling on cold starts, and getting silence half the time when I turn the key.

Just saying thank you for your advice and you really helped us and we needed to save that money more than you can imagine right now. Thanks Again.
@Ashbrychristi could have just unscrewed the iac and full cleaning because there holes on both sides throtle body and valve itself is dirty down there
@jonathanspatigue1...can u please explain how u read revs to 800......as far as I know revs are multiplied by 1000 to find the exact rev....so if the needle is on 1 it means its doing 1000.... if on 2 it means 2000...so and so...if they r one point below 1 then its 800....but in here i can see they r one point above 1 so its 1200.....am i right?? plz correct if i'm wrong.....
@moonstar9823 okay.. but i cant tell if ur being sarcastic... if you arent then yes one little needle under 1000 would be 800. pretty much every car must be idling at 800 if not then u gotta fix that by tuning or taking apart the idle air contl valve or getting a new one. but yes 800 would be one needle under 1000

I had the same problem with my 2001 Toyota Avalon would not start without applying pressure to gas but would cut off as soon as I released the gas cleaning the throttle body did the trick! I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor that did not work but the cleaning as in this video worked great!
Out of the few videos I have seen onnly person not to take out the whole thing to clean. As a lazy man I am glad to see that I don't have to take it off on my mom's care because it would be a bitch (not as much as that one) to take off.
I have the exact same model/year camry as you; even down to the color. Tried to start it up today and it wouldn't idle. Searched online and found your vid. Just saved me $297 (Can of Carb cleaner was $3:) Hats off to you sir!
My '92 Lexus ES 300 is experiencing the same issue, and has the same engine set-up as your featured camry. My problem is sort of minor though, when idle, it would stall for a second, then continue to run fine. But the stalling would occur every 10 seconds or so, whenever idle and at 1000 rpms or less.
I have a '96 Camry that developed the same problem last Sunday. It was a struggle to get it home. Followed the Haynes manual instruction to replace coolant temp sensor to remedy it's failure to idle - obviously wrong - didn't work. You're a lifesaver. Followed your instructions and she was running perfectly after 15 mins of work. Thanks a bunch!!!!!!!!
well not bad but few things i think you may left out you should wait before you start it once you sprayed that b12 in there it could choke you out and leave that code...also i think if you start something finish it... you might as well spray out your thottle clean it up and your intake and you EGR valve..if you got gunk in your idle control imagine what you got in those areas
Thanks for posting this video , it was very helpful.
My wife 's car , Avalon 2001, has exact same problem in the last 3 years, it came and go away by itself. We couldn't figure out why until now, Now we know for sure it is the Air Control Valve that cause this problem.
IAC let's air bypass while the throttle plate is closed. Hence, its at idle,so you can see how he had a difficult time letting her idle. Him feeding the gas was opening the plate, introducing air. Makes sense to me
I agree with JimmyTheFish08... i think its great you included the, before and after, of how the car was running... it always helps to actually show the problem and how to fix it instead of saying "if your car is messed up, just starting digging in there and it should be better in no time"
Exactly the problem on my 2000 Camry. Before I see this video, I went to a national repair chain in my area. ...and they said $90 just to open the hood; a tune up for $200 plus parts to repair the problem. Of course the best of me didn't bite it. After seeing your video, I went to autozone, borrowed their tools, loosen the 2 clamps screw, and sprayed the hole with gumout carb/choke cleaner. In 5 minutes the engine was idling perfectly. Thank you yuandrew for a the best DIY instruction.
Good tip man. Nice video, very helpful. In so many of these videos you see people cleaning things a cars magically fixed. You actually showed the car stalling, how to clean the IAC and showed that the issue was resolved. Good job. Thanks. Now I will try this out on my vehicle that has the exact same issue. Hope it works for me.
thank you my friend i dont know much about mechanics but i have the same problem ith my car and nobody hs been able to find the problem and i jus have spent lots of money having it fixed i am gonna try what you said and hopefully this will fix he problem thank you
Took wife's 98 Avalon to Sport City Toyota in Dallas just last week. Intermittent low rpm idle problem. There $99 diagnostic quote was $2495.00 They had a laundry list but I had them replace the idle air control valve and clean the carbon out of the throttle body. $596.00. They also offered to fix the lamp on the license plate for $21.95. Checked when I got home - both lamps were good. You think I'll go back? Least it does idle right now.
@MrBrianbajnauth Yes it will (99 Solara 2.2 owner) Please allow iac valve to dry about 30 mins before assembling back together to reduce damage of valve.. prob why dude has to clean it out every 3 years.. You should carefully remove the unit and clean both parts inside, spray it all and allow it to dry. Make sure all electrical wires and hoses are disconnected and battery negative as well.
My wife's 2002 S60 Volvo has similar problems. In her case, it was a combo of IAC valve & sticking throttle body blade. The fine folks at Volvo were more than happy to repair everything for about $800.
A few squirts of carb cleaner to the IAC & some MAF cleaner to the throttle blade..then scrub with a toothbrush.
Thanks for posting this. I think it applies to most of today's vehicles.
I just cleaned mine on a 98 Avalon. It took less than an hour to remove the tb completely, clean it and install. This is not all that hard. Tips: remove the 2 10 mm bolts that hold the throttle cable adjustment plate to get it out of the way after you unhook the cable ends. Also you can pinch off the coolant hoses with vise grips to keep the coolant from draining. You will see which ones they are when you pull them off!
Now the fun part: the iacv has to come off to get all the dirt out. Secure
DUDE! AWESOME. My 2000 camry had the exact same issue, and your video helped me find the culprit. I was just about to go get a new IAC valve, the part alone costs $200. I cleaned it just like yours and that cleared it right up. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
I just want to point out that newer model Camry (2002+) use electrical throttle control, no more idle air control valve. So if you have cold start problem, it is more likely fuel system is at fault (fuel pump, fuel injector, fuel pump relay or ECM).
I'm jealous at how easy it is to remove the throttle body unit on that car. My 2001 Celica GT-S is like a nightmare. I took the whole unit out and cleaned the IAC valve, MAF sensor and as well as the whole throttle body. Fixed the jumping idle and stalls by entering a complete stop.
Yes, the IAC valve costs $200+ to replace. I'd rather clean it first before buying a new one :D
Thanks for the video. I came in from doing some errands and I was letting the engine cool down on a 2000 Camry V6 so I could change the oil. After some time passed, I went to pull the car on some ramps and I noticed the car wouldn't stay idled. I immediately got online and this is the first video that pulled up. I'm going to try it now.
NOTE: I took the vacuum hose off from the bottom of my iac valve on my Sienna Van before I started spraying into the top iac opening. (You can use a pair of pliers to squeeze the clamp.) While spraying I watched the opening and I let it drain until it was clean. Almost all of the liquid ran out. I used a rag to wipe off the excess buildup. I started the van and problem solved. No smoke!! Idle back to normal. It ran great. Thanks for the video.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Great deed! It was truly a quick trick. Removing and replacing the cover was easy. The last section did not want to come off but with the straw i was able to reach that little hole. I sprayed throttle body cleaner. Car idles properly now. Previously I learned that similar problems occur due to malfunction of the coolent temperature sensor(not the one connected to the fan). It did help at but not this last time. Again this video was a great help.
I have a 2000 Toyoto Solara V6, stick shift. My engine looks exactly the same as yours. Whenever i start the car, it quite often just dies, and does not hold the idle. Sometimes if i hold my foot on the gas pedal, after a while it fixes it self, but it still idles very low at times. Sometimes even after driving it around for a bit hoping it would reset, or just having my foot on the gas, it still wont hold the idle. What do u think is the prob? idle control valve? PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks
That would be what you would experience. It will stall unless you give it a little gas until the engine warms up for a minute.
Try spraying it out like I did and see if it helps but if not, you may have to replace the whole valve (not cheap, expect it to cost about $250 for that part) since eventually, the motor goes bad on them from being stuck
Pt2 sienna: unclip the two air cleaner holddowns on the right. Unscrew all the way the remaining two clamps on the intake and use something to gently pry off the flex tube. Spray about 3 tablespoons of cleaner into the hole shown, it is almost under the windshield. Put back together, start engine. Will run rough and smoke while burning off the cleaner about 10 seconds. Easy fix. If you are not familiar with what you are doing, don't attempt any fixes.
Someone asked how to do this to a sienna, pls excuse sharing this thread. The same motor is in the siennas of similar years. You need to remove that black air intake rubber flex pipe to be able to spray carb cleaner into the opening shown in this video. There are ONLY three clamps that need to be removed on that tube. It is easier if you take off the air cleaner lid first. Unplug that electrical connector on top of the big black air cleaner, unscrew the clamp holding the wrinkled flex tube.
Thanks, this WORKED with mothers sienna van, same motor. Same problems, same fix. I didn't expect to be able to fix it. Finding that intake place for the IAC without taking it all apart helped a lot.
hi thanks for this video its great stuff i haad this problem few weeks ago had it cleaned by local garage next time will do it my self save some £££££££
had a hard time locating IAC of my sisters 2007 ford focus 1.8.. what i did was i removed the air cleaner and casing and the part where the idle control attached.. cleaned them with diesel and dry for 15 mins. wiped it clean.. noticed a foam filter like beneath the filter casing.. i replaced it.. problem solved.. the foam is clogging the hose connecting the filter casing to the engine..
I wish you had filmed the engine idling slow. Toyota engines (as well as GM's) have very good idle characteristics and are fun to watch when idling low. I had once seen a 4-cylinder Toyota idle so low it looked like it was being cranked by hand.
Okay I followed what you did there, and now white smoke is coming out of my exhaust, and my idle rpm on park no A/C is at 600 rpm, and stalls. Did you just make me break my car :(( ??
@saik0pod You are supposed to actually remove the IACV and clean it with the cleaner and a rag letting it dry out for 30mins to and hour before putting it back in. The problem may be that fluid that you sprayed could have gotten in somewhere else. Try cleaning it again after fully removing it.
@saik0pod It could be simply the cleaner being burned in the engine, and it needs another cleaning. OR, you might have a cracked head or blown headgasket. I guess maybe you could hyrdolock it if you emptied a half a can in it. If your not smart enough to work on your car, don't do it. He didn't make you do anything.
@hp11208 lol you talking to the youtube user that made this vid or the people commenting i think you might be this youtube user that made this video butt buddy
Haters are the REAL losers...... dude just fixed his dads car for free so all you guys that spent so much time and energy on negative comments can just SIT ON IT! Plus he made a great vid..... yuandrew keep up the good work and buy a haynes manual or what have you.... your dads car has the potential to be a hotrod....... 190hp out of the box..... saw that K&N sticker.... WOOT!
@TheMrHtor The check engine light was probably because he unplugged the MAF sensor with the ignition on. No biggie, just reset the light. I did what he suggested and made sure to plug everything back in before starting and as soon as the cleaner burned off it ran great, no engine lights.
Go back to ur computer and play w.o.w and leave the work to the real techs. It's cuase of stupid ass people like u tryen to fix ur own shit fuck it up! Then when you decide to bring it in you lie and just say it was fine and I was driving and it happened. No you tyed to fix it and fucked it up more than it was in the first place! Geez it woulda been impressive if u replaced the iac. And you don't have to say the motor code every time you talk about it. We can cleary see it's a 3.0!
K&N filters release oil the oil sticks to the crevices and attracts dirt., even though K&N sweat they dont, they do. I had the same problem with my tundra and replaced the K&N with a stock paper filter never had a problem again.
Plus, why would you use a filter you can see throguh?
oh and btw, cars should idle at about 900 rpm, so yours is now running higher than normal, you still have your foot to keep it from dieing, pretty obvious
why dont you adjust the idle valve :S so that it sits at correct idle...... so much easier, get a medium star head screw driver, at the idler, turn about 1/8th turn anticlockwise, and there you go.....
If your IAC valve is clogged your father doesnt take care of his car. Also note people if your gunna do a throttle service on your car make sure that your experienced. if you have no experience have a mech do it. if your gunna do it on your own make sure your car has a cable controlled throttle. if is electric controlled like this one and u spray the wrong areas it will mess the car up. people plain and simple have a mech do a fuel service every 5000 miles and you will be fine.
@Mathamattix I don't know what state you live in (maybe denial) but here in California the gas is so bad (filled with junk additives) that the IAC or ISCV gets carbon build up incredibly quickly. Some other states use the same junk. I agree, all repairs should be done by a qualified mechanic when financially capable. But, if I took my car to a pro every 5000 miles i would never get to leave the shop! At least be realistic :-) I use Seafoam products and they have never failed.
California does not consist only of bad gas. There is good gas out there, its called Chevron with Techron and Shell gasoline. Even if its in a bad area just add a bottle of fuel cleaner. 5000 mi per fuel service is what a mech will do to his own car. 10-15k mi is recommended. Take it how you want it. If all this cannot stop your car from gunking up, get out of cali, gas is to expensive there anyway. Also congrats on the seafoam stuff. I only trust seafoam on transmissions
This damaged my Throttle Position Sensor a few days later :-(
IF YOUR "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHTIS ON CONSTANTLY, YOU'RE GUZZLING TOO MUCH GAS AND HAVE LESS POWER, I'M SURE YOU DAMAGED YOUR TPS. WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE IS ASK YOUR MECH TO REMOVE THE IAC VALVE AND CLEAN IT MANUALLY. THE CARB CLEANER LEFT INSIDE THE VALVE REACHED THE SENSOR!!
Thanks! I just today got a quote from a mechanic to replace the IAC valve on my Avalon for $750. (He didn't even offer just cleaning it as an option.) Looks like he wants to take me for a ride. Your vid. is very helpful. Maybe my son could fix it for me .
your a pussy dude... the part isnt hard to take off. just take some damn time out of your day to fix it and stop being a pussy taking the easy way out...
NO dont ever just spray that shit in there. be a man, get your hands dirty, take some time outa your schedual and take the shit off the throttle body its easy as hell. just time consuming. of couse spraying carb cleaner will get it to run better bc its gasolinex10 directly injected. take off you IAC, get some carb cleaner and spray and wipe all of your "hardware" components. dont spray the electrodes. that will only cost you to buy a new one. Any q's on auto ill respond
@BadBoyMike3 its better to do it cold because its easier on your hands so you lower the risk of injury to yourself but i've done this on both hot and cold engines. some high level fuel cleaners require the engine running sometimes
i am having a problem with my iac valve on a 98 honda civic, i dont know how nor do i want to take it all apart... i would like to try this but there are two different holes in my throttle boddy... not sure which one to spray... can anyone help me out?
My Sienna has big problem with cold start. Dealer quote for fixing it (at San Diego) is $590. Bought intake cleaner from autozone for $4 and cleaned the IAC--The cold start problem is gone.
Thanks a lot! My camry is doing the same thing but not on cold start... It's doing it after it's been warmed up, shut off, and then when you try to start it again it just dies, and I have to crank it over 2k rpm to get it back to normal. Gonna try this tonight!
DONT USE CARB CLEANER!! it will breakdown the the plastic in the IAC motor and cause it to lock up. use Throttle Body and Intake Cleaner for fuel injected engines, which wont harm the motor or wiring. its available at any auto store for bought $5.
where does all that spray component goes..did u removed any hose too? and did u get any smoke when u started the car

Least it does idle right now.

hey i have the same car but 4 cyclinder 2.2liter will the idle air valve be the same place? please help!!!!
MrBrianbajnauth 11 months ago
@MrBrianbajnauth I dont think its in the same spot. depends on which way the throttle body is facing on those cars. should be relatively same area
warfreak88 9 months ago
@MrBrianbajnauth Yes it will (99 Solara 2.2 owner) Please allow iac valve to dry about 30 mins before assembling back together to reduce damage of valve.. prob why dude has to clean it out every 3 years.. You should carefully remove the unit and clean both parts inside, spray it all and allow it to dry. Make sure all electrical wires and hoses are disconnected and battery negative as well.

i used to have this problem as well. the 'check engine' light lit up.
but unfortunately it was my throttle body that was broken, after cleaning it with throttle body cleanser, it still lid up...
i had my throttle body changed and it cost me a bomb.

Thank you very much. How a great work! I have a 97 camry v6 and has the same problem. Your information help me to fix it.
winlongleeable 11 months ago

Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

my 98 does this sometimes when the engine is warm only. On cold starts it starts fine, could it have the same solution?
luis3826 11 months ago
Thanks for great video, very helpful info.

Thanks
brownpakipimp 1 year ago
@brownpakipimp
That would be what you would experience. It will stall unless you give it a little gas until the engine warms up for a minute.
Try spraying it out like I did and see if it helps but if not, you may have to replace the whole valve (not cheap, expect it to cost about $250 for that part) since eventually, the motor goes bad on them from being stuck

you said that it only happened on a cold start right

Pt2 sienna: unclip the two air cleaner holddowns on the right. Unscrew all the way the remaining two clamps on the intake and use something to gently pry off the flex tube. Spray about 3 tablespoons of cleaner into the hole shown, it is almost under the windshield. Put back together, start engine. Will run rough and smoke while burning off the cleaner about 10 seconds. Easy fix. If you are not familiar with what you are doing, don't attempt any fixes.
turbosbox 1 year ago
Someone asked how to do this to a sienna, pls excuse sharing this thread. The same motor is in the siennas of similar years. You need to remove that black air intake rubber flex pipe to be able to spray carb cleaner into the opening shown in this video. There are ONLY three clamps that need to be removed on that tube. It is easier if you take off the air cleaner lid first. Unplug that electrical connector on top of the big black air cleaner, unscrew the clamp holding the wrinkled flex tube.
turbosbox 1 year ago
Thanks, this WORKED with mothers sienna van, same motor. Same problems, same fix. I didn't expect to be able to fix it. Finding that intake place for the IAC without taking it all apart helped a lot.

I wish you had filmed the engine idling slow. Toyota engines (as well as GM's) have very good idle characteristics and are fun to watch when idling low. I had once seen a 4-cylinder Toyota idle so low it looked like it was being cranked by hand.

saik0pod 1 year ago
@saik0pod You are supposed to actually remove the IACV and clean it with the cleaner and a rag letting it dry out for 30mins to and hour before putting it back in. The problem may be that fluid that you sprayed could have gotten in somewhere else. Try cleaning it again after fully removing it.
auron21 1 year ago
@saik0pod It could be simply the cleaner being burned in the engine, and it needs another cleaning. OR, you might have a cracked head or blown headgasket. I guess maybe you could hyrdolock it if you emptied a half a can in it. If your not smart enough to work on your car, don't do it. He didn't make you do anything.

You didn't even clean the throttle body ?
To clean the I.A.C properly you need to remove. It's only 2 bolts and a connector.
Once removed you clean the port hole and I.A.C with carb cleaner and a rag like new.
You should clean the throttle body as it can give the same symptoms as I.A.C and only takes a minute.
Rev the engine under the hood to keep the car from stalling and spray vigorously then clean both top and bottom of the throttle plate.
Recommend cleaning MAF sensor as well.

@TheMrHtor The check engine light was probably because he unplugged the MAF sensor with the ignition on. No biggie, just reset the light. I did what he suggested and made sure to plug everything back in before starting and as soon as the cleaner burned off it ran great, no engine lights.

K&N filters release oil the oil sticks to the crevices and attracts dirt., even though K&N sweat they dont, they do. I had the same problem with my tundra and replaced the K&N with a stock paper filter never had a problem again.

oh and btw, cars should idle at about 900 rpm, so yours is now running higher than normal, you still have your foot to keep it from dieing, pretty obvious
Inflames179 1 year ago
why dont you adjust the idle valve :S so that it sits at correct idle...... so much easier, get a medium star head screw driver, at the idler, turn about 1/8th turn anticlockwise, and there you go.....

Mathamattix 1 year ago 2
@Mathamattix I don't know what state you live in (maybe denial) but here in California the gas is so bad (filled with junk additives) that the IAC or ISCV gets carbon build up incredibly quickly. Some other states use the same junk. I agree, all repairs should be done by a qualified mechanic when financially capable. But, if I took my car to a pro every 5000 miles i would never get to leave the shop! At least be realistic :-) I use Seafoam products and they have never failed.
erlitos 1 year ago
California does not consist only of bad gas. There is good gas out there, its called Chevron with Techron and Shell gasoline. Even if its in a bad area just add a bottle of fuel cleaner. 5000 mi per fuel service is what a mech will do to his own car. 10-15k mi is recommended. Take it how you want it. If all this cannot stop your car from gunking up, get out of cali, gas is to expensive there anyway. Also congrats on the seafoam stuff. I only trust seafoam on transmissions
